She was about to enter a coffee shop when she spotted one of the few people she actually did care about headed in her direction. "Sabrina," she greeted, surprisingly cheerful for a demon who had not yet had coffee.
Sabrina had been on her way to look for a few more pieces for the apartment. Little things that she could send a quick picture text to Nick about to get his opinion or things that he’d said she could pick out whatever for. Mostly plates and utensils or cups or pots and pans that they had already decided on the brand but just needed to actually pick up in the store. And with him busy at Dorian’s and her schedule wide open she had been more than happy to engage in some retail therapy.
She glanced up from her phone at her name, spotting Maze and headed straight over to the demon, hugging her tightly. Did Maze accept hugs? Sabrina wasn’t certain but she was giving her one anyway.
Maze blinked at the ambush, hesitating a moment before she hugged Sabrina back, completely taken aback and with no idea what prompted this force display of affection? Was that what it was? Or was the teenager alright? When she pulled back, Maze studied Sabrina carefully.
"Who do I need to murder?"
“Technically I already killed them so it's fine.” Sabrina just pushed down the fact that she’d also died in the process. This was going to be a good day and she was not going to breakdown in the middle of the street in front of Maze. Nope.
Her smile wasn’t quite as bright as it usually was, but it was genuine. “You weren’t thinking of getting coffee at this place, were you? Because they are crap and don’t have any good pastries to go along with it.”
"Impressive," Maze nodded. She didn't know who Sabrina was referring to, but she was going to give her credit anyway. Of course they deserved it, that wasn't even a question. "So what was that hug?"
The demon couldn't help but smile as Sabrina recommended against the particular coffee shop. "Good to know."
“I can’t hug my favorite demon that I haven’t seen in a couple of weeks?” Sabrina asked as she shrugged, nodding for them to head further down the street. There was a better coffee shop a block down that had cinnabuns the size of her head.
“Dad says you have an evil owl now?” She hadn’t seen it when she’d gone to check on the hellhounds.
"You can…" Maze started, as she obviously hadn't fought it off, which was a testament to how fond she was of Sabrina. "But you don't." She eyed the blonde, but then shrugged, allowing the subject change.
"I do." Maze said that with a wicked grin. "His name is George, and he's just like the ones we had to fight in ancient Vallo, except he only tries to kill me on occasion now. The other ones were bloodthirsty bastards. I love him."
She didn't toss the word love around easily, but she'd woken up one morning to the bird diving at her, clearly poised to attack and it had won her over completely.
Sabrina was grateful that Maze had so easily accepted the subject change. There was only so much that she wanted to talk about what had happened back home. Technically she’d only actually told Lucifer. Nick had been the one to tell Dan and the others had already known from their own memories. But the weight of others knowing was enough to drag her down and she wanted to skirt away from that heaviness for a little while longer.
“He sounds exactly like what I would picture you cooing at.” She’d need to meet him some other time. Sabrina nodded toward the counter. “I’m paying.”
Again, Maze gave Sabrina a look. "Why?" she asked directly. But she ordered her coffee and let the teenager pay. "You're weird."
“Thank you.” She was going to take that as a compliment, ordering herself a coffee and one of the giant cinnabons. Might as well add to the sugar rush.
“What are you doing here anyway?” Sabrina asked once they had their treats and were at a table. It didn’t seem late enough to be getting ready to go into Lux for a shift.
"I now get paid to teach people how to beat other people up," Maze answered. "Of course, I'm not doing that today but I'm on this ridiculous, responsible schedule now between that and patrols.
"I needed coffee," she mentioned. "What are you doing? Other than ambushing me with hugs."
Teaching people how to beat others up was definitely something Sabrina could see Maze being good at. Maybe she should sign up for that kind of class. It could help the next time Vallo decided to be weird with magic. She added it to her mental to-do list, even though she knew she needed to be whittling that down and not adding to it.
“Nick and I moved into our own place. So I’m looking for decorations and things that we need for it. Sending him pictures for his opinion and then buying stuff.” It was a nice way to fill up her days in between therapy appointments.
"Cool," Maze replied. "Get a sex swing."
“I was thinking more along the lines of one of those chairs that apparently aligns well to your back.” Though a swing could be fun.
"Is it a sex chair?" she asked, the demon with a one track mind.
"Anyway, cool. I'll go with you." She didn't really care that she was inviting herself along, because she didn't have anything else to do. "I can point out ugly furniture and you can send it to whatshisname and see if he thinks you're serious."
“Technically any chair can be a sex chair,” Sabrina pointed, but she wouldn’t mind Maze tagging along. Nick was busy with getting Dorian’s ready so it would be nice to have someone else shopping with her. “I’m pretty sure he knows my tastes by now but I think it could be fun to show a few really strange things.” Especially since her tastes ran a little more macabre than most.
“I also need to get the things that are on my list though.” Sabrina held it up, a few notes she’d jotted down at breakfast that morning.
"Very true," Maze said, considering that. But not every chair was good for back alignment. "Let's get you a chair."
And maybe a swing too. Along with whatever was on the list. And Maze was determined that she was going to find something for their apartment that was ridiculous, but that Sabrina would agree to.
As they left the coffee shop and Sabrina was leading the way, Maze asked, "Are you two excited to be on your own?"
“Very excited. The mortuary was just too claustrophobic. Though dad offered us a floor of his building to turn into our own apartment.” Which would have made for an amazing place, but far too big for what they were wanting. “That was really cool of him but Nick and I decided we wanted to keep doing things on our own.”
The small apartment that they had decided was comfortable and Sabrina had felt like she could finally breathe again, no longer having constant reminders of everything she’d lost around every corner. Instead it was a blank canvas for the two of them to paint their future on. Much better.
They headed into the first shop that was on Sabrina’s list, a small boutique that sold various rugs, some furniture and a variety of knickknacks. “When did you start teaching people to beat up others?”
"Forever ago," Maze replied. "But I just started getting paid for it this week. I'm working at the Underground." Technically she hadn't been teaching people before, just beating them up and expecting they'd learn to suck less from the experience.
"So what are you looking for here?" she asked, immediately moving over to a display of knickknacks.
Right. That was the place that the Frye’s owned. Sabrina thought it might have been where Fight Club was held too but she’d never been, nor had much desire to go to it. It did seem like it was a good fit for Maze...though how many jobs was that now? Three? Wasn’t she also on the defense squads?
Maybe she should start looking into getting her own job again.
“A rug for the living room area.” Something comfy that she could sink her toes into but that Salem also wouldn’t rip to shreds. “And just little, fun things for accents.”
"A good rug can help you move a body," Maze said. "I know that seems like it would only work on tv, but it's legit."
Of course, Sabrina had magic, which probably made that unpleasant task easier.
It wasn’t that unpleasant. Sabrina had grown up in a mortuary after all. She’d been around dead bodies since she was born. She’d even rubbed the water that had been used to clean corpses once all over her own body to try and hide the fact she was alive when going into Hell that first time. Before learning that wasn’t really necessary.
“I’m more interested in if it’ll match the couch we already bought, but we definitely need something sturdy.” Preferably one that Shadow wouldn’t turn into a muddy color within days.
“How’s redecorating Pandemonium going? Is it just the way you want it now?”
Truthfully, Maze probably wasn't going to be much help in picking anything out, but she was eager to share her opinions anyway, not even asking what color the couch was before she pointed out three potential rugs. One was the color of dried blood which wasn't the most attractive option, but it could potentially prove to be convenient.
"Yes, and it hasn't even reset for like a month, so I might be able to keep it that way. Well you know, other than the Hello Kitty pillow that keeps appearing."
She suspected Sabrina might know something about that.
“That Hello Kitty,” Sabrina grinned. “Just can’t quite get her to leave completely.” It was probably pointless to keep getting the pillow to appear but it amused her and didn’t seem to irritate Maze, so she was going to keep getting it to pop up.
She picked out a green rug and a few little knick knacks for the bathroom, sending them through a portal to the apartment once she’d paid for them. As they headed to the next store, she spared the demon a glance, finally asking the question she’d been mulling over for the last bit.
“So...why all of the jobs?”
"The Underground needed trainers. I can get paid to beat people up, not a bad deal," Maze shrugged. "Lux was because I needed money and it was familiar. And the defense team… I get paid to beat things up, and it's only once every four days."
That was the gist of it. Was she also making sure to fill her time so she wasn't thinking about other things, like not having a soul or her failed relationship with Eve? Not where she was likely to admit it.
"Might as well turn my skills into money, right?"
Sabrina wasn’t about to press. She didn’t like when people did it to her. “Money does make the world go ‘round.”
It did make her wonder again if she should be looking for her own job again so she could keep herself occupied. But auditions were soon and she had plans with some of the covens to work with them on their magic. Plus there were the hounds and souls to release. And rooms to decorate in the apartment. So maybe not yet. It wasn’t like Nick and her were going to struggle to pay rent or anything. Between Dorian’s and her inheritance they were pretty set.
“Do you know where we can buy a sex swing from?” Because now that the idea was in her head, Sabrina kind of wanted to get one.
Maze's eyebrow quirked up at Sabrina's question and she grinned. "What kind of friend would I be if I didn't?" she asked. "That's the fun kind of furniture shopping. Let's go."
