It was the morning after everyone had returned from the past and Thor was still feeling some sort of way. Everyone was alive and back in the time that they belonged in, but a horrible, intrusive thought was picking away at the back of his mind - what if this was just a precursor of things to come? What if the appearance of the Time Stone meant Vallo had plans to bring Thanos here next? Or what if it got a taste for separating people and it sent his loved ones away again? Or him, back to a world without Fandral? Too many what ifs were swirling around in his mind, as he left Fandral’s cottage. There was only one thing to be done for it then. He went into the city after that and picked up a heavy breakfast full of all sorts of baked goods and cooked meats. And mimosas, of course there were mimosas because after what she had gone through the last ten days, Darcy Lewis deserved mimosas for breakfast today. He hadn’t warned her he was coming over though, just showed up on the steps of her RV entryway and hollered, “Darcy Lewis! I bring you a feast!” When he had things on his mind, this was where he went. To the woman he considered his best friend. As was fairly customary, Darcy sat on her bed with her laptop on her lap, freshly washed hair up in a towel so it wasn’t dripping all around her comfortable tshirt. She was in pajamas, but knew full well she’d have to put ugh real pants on to venture up to the DOA offices later today. But for now she could catch up on literally anything and everything, including showers. Of which she had already had a half dozen. Thor just randomly showing up and shouting about a feast? Not a surprise, even if she hadn’t been warned. “Hey, come on in! Hopefully you’ve brought something besides coffee because that’s all I’ve been living on since 5am.” Because that was all she really had, post fridge cleanout. Ten days had just been asking a little too much for all of her leftovers. Thor had absolutely not even thought about being a kind neighbor and clearing out people’s fridges while they had been gone. He had been too busy worrying and then, later, fighting demons and harpies to even realize that it might have been a nice gesture from him. Oops? But breakfast would have to do, even if he had ulterior motives for that. “Mimosas?” He said, hopefully, lifting up the bag that held a jug of mimosa in it. “I hope that will suffice for now?” He had thought about coffee, but this conversation definitely needed something stronger than that. He stepped over the clutter of books and science gear that made up Darcy’s floor, well acquainted with the tight space that the RV offered. He dropped the bags of food onto the tiny countertop by the sink and started to plate food and pour drinks, moving through her cupboards like he himself lived there. “Are you going into work later?” He asked, when he finally had a tray of food ready. He brought it to the back, where Darcy’s bedroom was located, and it set it down next to her, before gently flopping down next to her and peeking at what she was up to on her laptop. “You’re a god,” Darcy groaned happily at the thought of mimosas. Too bad if it made her seem like a basic bitch, she had zero fucks to give and just as many grabby hands for Thor with that delightful array. She alternated from typing away at the laptop and watching the fine specimen that was Thor preparing food. He was her best friend, and she was a sucker for having someone cook for her - especially as someone as good looking as he was - even if there was no romantic inclination between the two. It was just like watching art. She went for the mimosa first, no hesitation. After a sip, she nodded. “Yeah, I think I got about fourteen hours of sleep last night, so I’m ready to tackle whatever Jiang Cheng has done to my desk. Probably stole all of my pens as revenge. Or worse, organized it.” “So I’ve been told once or twice,” Thor said, smirking a little because yeah, sometimes his ego showed. But he patiently waited for her to get her mimosa on and to give him a vague idea about how much of her time he could eat up without remorse, before he revealed why he was here: “Before you go take Jiang Cheng on, I need your help figuring out if I’m in love or if I just really like sleeping with someone.” Blunt was too soft of a word for Thor, sometimes. Darcy froze in place, but only for half a second. She was quick to react, thanks to years of dealing with an enormous amount of fuckery. Love-questions were definitely on the low end of fuckery. Certainly not enough to stop her mimosa and pastry consumption. But she also could let him squirm a little as she openly thought about it, slowly chewing her delicious danish and making little happy noises as she went. Finally, she looked him dead in the eye and shrugged. “Why not both?” It wasn’t helpful, but it was teasing, and Darcy winked a moment later. “Okay but seriously uhhh-- If, hypothetically speaking, the person had happened to be away the last ten days, and may have gotten hurt, how would you feel? Worried, sad, concerned? Or more horny, upset you haven’t gotten laid?” Thor very openly groaned and flopped back down on the bed, facing the ceiling with an exaggerated tortured face. “You tease, but this is serious!” And sometimes, it felt world ending...but Thor was dramatic. Especially when it came to his love life. Thankfully, Darcy had more to offer than teasing. Folding his hands over his stomach and resting them there, he considered her questions seriously. It didn’t take him long to answer her. “If, hypothetically, this person had been away the last ten days and gotten hurt,” honestly, he should just say Fandral, “I would have felt more worried and concerned for Fandral, er, I mean, this person, than I would have been about the lack of sex.” They hadn’t even had sex last night, that’s how worried Thor had been. “But I would have been worried and upset over anyone else I knew getting hurt, whether or not I was having sex with them, so is this question a good indicator for my question?” Darcy waved a hand. “It’s just part one of a multi-part question, chill.” But she adored dramatic Thor, it was one of her favorite things about him (on a long list of favorite things). “I already know you’re not an egotistical lover, you’ve proven that in the past.” For all of his blustering and giant personality, Darcy had seen first hand just how genuine and caring he was towards his loved ones - not just the ones he was sleeping with. “But,” Darcy mused over the situation for another minute, slowly chewing away at the danish in her hand. She wasn’t exactly the expert on love, none of her relationships had ever really reached that point, and her last fierce burning crush was doused with cold water before it could even really take hold. “Let’s see - do you find yourself getting a little jealous when this person flirts with other people, where you wouldn’t have before? Or you’re thinking about them a lot more, and not just in the naked way, but in the I want to hold your hand in public way?” She was killing him with these long pauses. Why couldn’t he have all the questions at once? Thor didn’t like not seeing the bigger picture, but he knew Darcy wouldn’t toy with him for the hell of it either. So he tried to force patience on himself as he awaited her next question. “He is...charming. It is his way. I no longer get jealous of it when he is that way with others,” Thor explained. There would be no taming of Fandral, Thor knew that much. But he still wanted to understand what it was that he felt toward the other man. “Yes to the other question though. I do think of them more and in more romantic ways. Not strictly sexual. But that could just be the closeness of ours, as of late?” Darcy had no regrets about the pausing, or the teasing, or the light torture. Sometimes Thor needed to give himself a breather, anyway, and she was happy to provide the life lesson of patience. Also maybe she just liked to see him sweat, a little bit. She did nod along with his explanation though. Navigating through the perils of friends with benefits to dating was definitely a different sort of beast when it came to Asgardians. Or just any kind of other-worldly being. They all had their own level of dramatics. “It’s like, double tricky here, right? Cause Vallo brings people you might not get to see in other circumstances, and you wonder, oh shit what if I lose them again, right?” And she knew exactly where Fandral unfortunately fell into that. Darcy poked him lightly in the shoulder, and then offered him a sausage. “If it is love, does it change anything on your end?” Turning on his side, Thor nodded solemnly. "I was not there when he was struck down in our world. But we are both here now and I don't know if what I feel is because of my guilt or if it’s because some misplaced sense of ‘what if I never get this chance again?’ Am I confusing sex and affection for love?” Sighing and rubbing his face with his free hand, he added, “And honestly, does it really matter? He is not one for monogamy and would never settle down. My feelings would, ultimately, not change anything.” Darcy started slowly ticking things off of her fingers while looking down at him. “So you don’t want to change him and still appreciate him for how he is,” one finger down. “It’s not all about sex.” Second finger down. “Lots of thinking and heart fluttering and butterflies in the stomach and normal stuff.” Third and fourth finger down, just for good measure. “I’d at least venture to say you like him for more than sex.” She’d suspected that for a while, from back when Valkyrie was here, too. “But look- Love doesn’t have to be about monogamy and stuff, right? Plenty of people have open and healthy relationships without worrying about settling down. Sometimes it’s just nice to put your feelings out there and talk to the person about it? Be able to tell them all the sappy shit in bed at night without feeling like you have to slip out or stay neutral?” At this rate, Darcy was going to offer herself up as an advice columnist. Honestly, Darcy could make bank as a relationship therapist, but Thor wasn’t aware that this was such a thing. But whatever she was doing now, it was good and it was working. But there was still that fear that Thor was imagining everything in his head, that the moment from the night before was more in his mind than what reality was. He said as much. “And if I go to him and tell him this, only to find out that he thinks of me just as a friend? What then?” There was a vulnerability to his words, a real fear that he had been debating in his own mind for awhile now. Sighing, he burrowed his face into her comforter. “Why is this hard, Darcy?” Came his muffled question. “Then,” Darcy closed her laptop and pushed it to the edge of the bed. “You come back here and we get super fucking drunk and whine about our love lives. It’s a time honored tradition.” She flopped down next to him and poked his shoulder again. “Butttttt I’d be willing to bet a lot of money that I don’t have that he doesn’t think of you as just a friend. Especially not if you’re taking the D-Train to BoneTown on a regular basis. You got this, Strongest Avenger.” One beefy arm shot out and grabbed Darcy around the waist, pulling her close for a cuddle. Somewhere from the vicinity of her shoulder, he could be heard saying, “Aye, I got this. But right now, hugs?” It was a good thing he was easy to cuddle, cause Darcy just sort of melted into it and mumbled against his shoulder. “Yeah, hug time.” She only had long enough arms to wrap around part of him, but did that as she made herself comfortable. |
