Saturday.
WARNING: references to death & suicide. caos spoilers.
Nick bolted awake and immediately reached for Sabrina, just for the reassurance that she was there, and very much alive.
The space next to him in the bed was empty.
No need to panic, he told himself, but when he found the bathroom and the kitchen empty, he took hold of his locket and attempted to teleport himself to her.
He didn't move from the kitchen. The room started to spin.
He closed his eyes to steady himself, which was a regrettable mistake because instantly the memories of his dreams flooded back.
Sabrina had saved the world from the terrors.
At the cost of her life.
And not in a way that she would be resurrected, or brought back. No. She was gone. He'd returned from the void triumphantly only to find her void of life, no one having saved her as she was busy saving everyone.
In the kitchen, Nick broke down and sobbed.
That would have been enough to deal with. More than enough to deal with. Nick couldn't even deal with that, so there was no way he could deal with what happened next.
You need to find her. She has to be here.
Dorian's. Pandemonium. It was too early for a milkshake but he checked both of their milkshake haunts. And then a dozen other places even though he knew that if she was there he would be able to find her.
And then it hit him. The one place where she might remove her locket in order to protect him.
So he found himself running through the Forest of Torment, yelling Sabrina's name, the hellhounds and Shadow in full howls as if they knew he needed to be heard. Salem bringing up the line, not letting the procession out of his sight.
In his dreams, he'd been calmly aware of the fate he'd chosen for himself. Nick had awoken sickened by how easily he'd chosen to leave life behind, no matter the obvious, unrelenting pain because he knew Sabrina would never have wanted him to give up his life so soon, not with an eternity awaiting them later.
But now in the forest he could almost understand, the hopelessness of the situation creeping up on him. More than once he lost the path, his entourage acting as guides. When it came time to leave, when he realized she would not have removed that necklace and would have given him a head's up to her location, he allowed himself to be guided back to Pandemonium, and then he returned to her room, where he'd woken up.
Only then did he realize he'd left his phone behind, and did he see the notification from Ambrose on the network.
He read it, then looked immediately for a journal he had not seen before, grabbing it and reading until he found the name he was looking for.
And finally he felt like he was no longer drowning. Like he could breathe again.
