Essek teaches and introductory and advanced class on graviturgy and an advanced class on chronurgy; when he initially started teaching, he also did an intro to magic theory, but he realized that he gels better with older students that had a foundation to magic already, so his classes now kind of cater to that.
Graviturgy focuses on controlling and manipulating gravity, both for practical use and for protection/battle/etc! The intro class mostly focuses on the theory behind it, though it works into practical use near the end of the class. A high grade in that class is a prerequisite to the advanced as it can be pretty dangerous magic if you don't understand it properly. The advanced class is almost entirely practical. And the chronurgy is, of course, the manipulation of time. It's a good mix of theory and practical.
Essek as a teacher is fairly laid back, though there's always a strong focus on how dangerous these particular magics can be if they aren't studied and practiced thoroughly. He isn't the kind of teacher that can be steered off topic very easily, but he will hold conversations and discussions easily, so long as they're more or less relating to what the class is focusing on at the time. When having conversations like this, he always listens very intently and considers every point being made; he wants his students to feel as though they're being heard and taken seriously. He rewards creativity and ingenuity; even if the idea might not work out in practice, he appreciates willingness to think outside of the box. There is a hefty amount of homework in his advanced classes, but it's always with purpose; he doesn't assign stuff out just for the sake of it and he does try to keep his homework pretty to the point. He also grades and gives feedback relatively quickly and always has office hours after school for students to come in if they need extra support or guidance. He also picks up on student slang and then purposely uses it incorrectly later on in the lesson.
As a colleague, Essek isn't super into small talk, but isn't necessarily unfriendly, either. He will hold conversation in the lounge (I'm assuming there's somewhere for staff to chill, lol) and will swap gossip about students and stuff, but he rarely wants to talk about the weather or weekend plans. He'll bring pastries in about once or twice a week for the staff (and his classes), too.
As Andrea mentioned, he's in a relationship with Caleb! Essek refers to him as his partner in general conversation, brings coffee for him every morning, and is generally a pile of mush whenever he's around him, but it's kept professional at school.
