Matt!
"Where's Matt??"
This had been a frequent question around the Flint household, though it was usually directed towards her brother, who responded mostly with shrugs. Jolene knew her brother pretty well, and something told her that he wasn't lying on the rare occasions he would mumble an 'I don't know'. She could tell that the same question had crossed his mind these last few weeks, but with everything else Caden had to think about, she doubted he had much time to investigate Matt's sudden disappearance from his household. He was barely home as it were, these days – always off talking to one important person or another, trying to finalize some big changes that were coming up; always coming home late and leaving early. It didn’t help that she hadn’t really been speaking to Caden much these days, not since they had argued earlier in the week, so she hadn’t even attempted to try and pick his brain about everything.
The children certainly hadn't let the Quidditch star's absence go unnoticed. They were the ones who were usually pestering their Dad, trying to get answers. Especially Jacob, the poor lad, who idolized Matt. Jolene had tried not to get involved, but she had seen Delilah at Nora and Orion's wedding, and had gotten bits and pieces of her side of the story. She felt it wasn't her place to get involved in their affairs, because while Delilah was her friend, Matt was the Godfather of her baby nephew, and a close friend of her brother's. She decided she wasn't going to pick sides, but the boys missed him so much, and she couldn't stand the looks of disappointment on Jacob's face whenever Estella and Caden told him they didn't know where his friend went. She began to worry the young boy might think it had something to do with him.
Estella was quite surprised, when she had asked for Matt's address. She didn't want her sister-in-law to fret too much, so she just thanked her and gave her a kiss on the cheek before she grabbed her coat and headed home. She took a piece of parchment and scrawled a note to Matt, asking him if he'd like to talk, and maybe grab some breakfast the following morning. She thought it was an innocent enough request, and was glad when she asked her to meet him at his place bright and early.
She had gotten up with the sun, as she usually did, and went through her normal routine before throwing on her clothes. She wore a button down blouse with a pair of skinny jeans and ankle boots, adding an extra inch or so to her height – and she needed all the help she could get. She tucked some of her hair behind her ear before she knocked on the door. She folded her hands in front of her as she waited for him to answer, and once he appeared in the doorway, she gave a warm smile.
"Hey," she greeted him, leaning in to give him a kiss to the cheek, just as she did with many of her close friends. Stepping back, she got a good look at him. "It's been so long, I'd almost forgotten your face," she teased, slipping her hands into her pockets. She knew Matt's face was going to be one that stuck with her for a long time.
