Later that night...

When he was fully back in his own body, Kingsley let out a deep breath. He nudged the unconscious form of Christopher Loftus with his foot, ensuring that the man was completely out before he uncorked the potion vial that would remove his disguise. The polyjuice potion’s effects wore off, the mask of Malcolm Savage dissolving with it. Kingsley grew a good three inches, his shoulders became broader, and it was a peculiar sight to watch your skin morph into a darker tone, his own. He had not enjoyed playing the part, but it had been necessary.

Christopher Loftus, Malcolm Savage, Avery and Titus Bobbin, were all graduates of the Hogwarts Class of 1972, and were all long-time conspirators in the massive potions ring that Bexley and Ryan had been investigating. Kingsley’s interception of the younger aurors’ mission, the night at the diner when all hell had broken loose, had been because of his trailing of Loftus. He had been put on the assignment, a missing auror was no laughing matter, but soon it turned into a puzzle with pieces falling in from left and right and all around.

Being in the skin of Savage, an auror he had looked up to, trusted as he had been one of Kingsley’s early partners, was draining. He could mimic the man’s mannerisms down to a science, and had easily fooled Loftus during their short, but to the point, meeting.

“We need to get him into holding,” Kingsley said with a nod, looking over to his partner of the night. Rami Dagworth had been a vital help throughout these tumultuous few days. Connecting Savage to the Bobbins within their limited timespan would have been near impossible without the Unspeakable, and soon their combined efforts would provide the final blow to the entire operation.

A lone brow rose on Rami's face as he looked upon the slumped Auror on the ground. He remembered Christopher Loftus quite well from school, and Rami could not say he found himself surprised to learn the older wizard had seemingly faked his own disappearance to contribute, rather freely, in illegal underground potions trade and manipulation. If it hadn't all lead up to the past week's events, one could have even seen Loftus' involvement with the Bobbins and Savage as impressive. But unfortunately, Rami felt little wonder or impress in happenings that resulted in the poisoning of his girlfriend, and actually, created quite a motivation to tear as much of this operation as ruthlessly as possible. That was how he had found Savage, after all...

Crouching to the floor, Rami rested one elbow on his knee as he rifled through Loftus' person. Yes, Kingsley had succeeded in catching him, and yes, Loftus' involvement in this mounting case within the DMLE was finished, but that did not mean he had nothing left to offer. Before Kingsley could tell him otherwise, Rami quickly began to hunt and pick through Loftus' his inner cloak. Suspicious keys, a few letters, a vial or two of what was clearly poison... His jaw hardened.

Rami was aware that it was Kingsley's nature, his duty, to follow and uphold the law. Shacklebolt was effective and systematic at what he did and how he did it, a trait which he and Rami shared and the reason why they had, almost too easily, been able to work well together these past few days. But that was coming to an end, and where they saw eye to eye on many things was splitting. Did Christopher Loftus truly deserve to be put through the law system to hopefully get sent to Azkaban and live out his days in a cell? Rami could not say he agreed that was a just sentence for all he had done.

"There are other places he can go," Rami countered, very even in his tone as he, rather carelessly, roughed Loftus back onto his stomach. Keeping what he had collected in his hands for the time being, Rami shifted on his feet, looking curiously now back up at Kingsley's face. The Auror would not agree, he was sure, but it had to be said aloud.

Kingsley held back his breath, but even he couldn't stop his slight nod of agreement.

"There are many places he should go," he said, having refused to think about how terribly wrong all of this mess could have gone if anyone had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. A minute late could have meant...He straightened his shoulders, rolling his lips under, "but there are too many variables to give him what he deserves."

Variables like Kera Ryan, who had been the one to spot Loftus. Bexley, the hit-wizard Ryan had been with had been debriefed, the reporter who had given Kingsley the last pieces of information he'd needed to connect the disgraced auror to the Bobbins...those few left in the department that could be trusted...Too many questions would be asked by people who deserved answers. No, they would have to do this the right way, but that didn't mean they needed to be happy about it.

His hand moved slightly toward the items in Rami's. He supposed this could be a lackluster compensation for having to take Loftus to court. "If you find anything that could seal him away faster than I believe he already will be, you will let me know."

Kingsley left his words hanging in the air with the possibility of turning into a question. He did believe that there was enough irrefutable evidence against this imposing team the Class of '72 had created, especially with Bexley and Ryan on the other end...
