Motoko had been feeling a little heebie jeebie lately, but tonight was the first time in awhile that she didn’t feel like she was being followed. Maybe Mayuri was right and there was more to her being assigned here than met the eye. Didn’t matter, she had a job to do, and she needed to be in shape to do it.
Even if it meant jogging at night.
Eli liked to walk at night, and she folded her hands behind her back as she went, her strange eyes seeing more than anyone else. Which was why she saw the slight woman jogging across the street. Smiling and nodding slightly, Eli wanted her to know she wasn’t a threat. It was nighttime after all.
She slowed in her jogging as she approached the girl. And she was a girl. Motoko looked around, her senses suddenly strained. “Hello...isn’t it a little late to be out alone?”
“I’m fine, really. There’s nobody out on the street for a few miles.” Eli’s nose rivaled her papa’s, and her hearing and vision were just as acute.
“And you’re sure about that?” Motoko came to a stop, folding her arms. There was something incredibly wrong about this picture that she couldn’t quite place.
“I - yes?” Eli backed away from the woman a step. Suddenly she didn’t feel as welcomed.
She held up a hand, slowly, then showed Eli her badge. “I have to ask. I’d be remiss if I ignored a girl out in the dark alone, and then if something happened to you? It could mean my job, and my ability to sleep at night.”
“I can go home straight away. I just like the night air.” Eli bit her lip, trying not to panic.
“I’m sorry.” Motoko tried to smile reassuringly. “Lets start over. I’m Motoko.”
“Eli.” Eli’s voice was small, quiet, unsure. If she’d been able to move like she could in her dreams, she’d have climbed up the wall, literally.
“I really don’t mean to scare you...I’ve just seen too many girls hurt.” Motoko felt like a right ass, now.
“I know, I do, but I can handle myself.” Eli wasn’t up to full vampiric strength and speed, but she could whup a normal human.
She raised an eyebrow. “I get told that a lot. But your country is a free one so I can’t really do anything except caution you to be careful. Please. I’m sure there are people who worry about you.”
“It is not mine!” Eli laughed, smiling and wringing her hands behind her back. “I was not born here. And I will be careful, I always am.” She appreciated this woman’s help, but it just wasn’t needed.
Motoko eyed her dubiously, but nodded her head. She decided to jog out here more often, at least to keep an eye on things. “I’m sorry again.” She turned to continue on her path.
“Who keeps you safe?” Eli wondered. “Should I walk with you, to keep you from being mugged?”
That made her laugh. “You’re a sweet kid, but I’m armed and trained. Thank you though.”
“And I’m special. Are you sure?” Eli wasn’t about to say how, but she was.
“Special? Yeah, I’m sure you are.” Motoko waved a hand. “See you around.”
“Okay.” Eli shrugged to herself. She started to walk toward her house.
Motoko watched her for a long while, before continuing on her jog. She still felt uneasy..had it been that girl? This country was getting stranger by the day.
