Who: Julian and Maia.
What: Awkward flirting!
When: Sunday morning.
Where: Coffee shop.
Rating: PG-13.
Status: Complete!

Julian was at a coffee shop, picking at a salad as he read a magazine before his shift. He liked being in places that didn’t have horrible music piped in. HIs white-blond hair hung in his eyes, and he might have had some leftover eyeliner on from the night before.

This had quickly become Maia’s favorite coffee shop, since it was fairly close to her new favorite donut place, and really, she was having to exercise a lot more often to keep from gaining too much weight.

Julian looked up and saw a pretty brunette who looked a little confused. He gave her a sympathetic smile and returned to his magazine.

“There’s just too much bloody good stuff,” she said with a sigh. She settled on a good old fashioned cuppa.

Her accent was pretty, and Julian chuckled at her comment. The coffee shop was really good, but he always had hot chocolate.

“Something funny?” She turned to look at him, flashing her teeth in a broad smile.

“I just know how you feel,” he smiled. “But I always end up ordering the same thing every time. I’m boring, I think.”

“Well I wouldn’t want to be boring. That just wouldn’t do.” So she decided to order something exciting. Coffee with extra sugar. Which wasn’t exciting at all but she was being ironic.

He raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure you can handle that? Pretty radical.”

“That’s me. Radical and dangerous,” Maia winked at him. If he only knew... “Mind if I join you?”

“You may, of course.” He leaned back, smiling in a way that he hoped was friendly more than flirty. He was taken, after all.

Maia didn’t know that, and there were times she didn’t really care. Mostly. Okay, she was a secret goody two shoes but don’t tell anyone. “Thanks, love.” She sat and gave him a smile.

“So, are you from California originally?” He smiled, figuring nobody asked her that.”

“Oh, yes I was like, totally born and raised here.” She made a surfer sign with her fingers.

Julian couldn’t help but giggle, tucking his hair behind his ears. “Yeah, I think I went to elementary school with you.”

“Oh yes! Did you have Mrs. Hall? Big woman, auburn hair, attitude like the world owed her for her miseries?”

“Of course.” He reached out to shake her hand. “I’m Julian, it’s good to meet you.”

“Maia, and the pleasure is all mine.” she was virtually purring as she shook his hand.

He winced. “Not too much, I hope. My girlfriend has a mean right hook.”

Maia blanched. “Bugger. Sorry. Guess it’s good my friend directed me to her favorite brand.”

Julian blinked. “Of what?”

“Vibrators.”

The blond man just nodded his head, trying not to giggle. “I’m sorry? For your ... loss? Of ... men?” He didn’t know what to do.

Maia found herself grinning at him. “Thank you. I’m sure I’ll make do.”

“I’m sure you will too.” Julian winced, laughing to himself.

“Sorry.” She didn’t look or sound sorry.

“No you’re not!” Julian smirked.

“Okay, I’m not sorry in the slightest.” She wasn’t even blushing. “I was recommended to try the hitachi. And let me just say, your girlfriend needs one.”

“I’ll let her know, but she might blush.” Julian smiled fondly as he thought of Anya.

“That’s cute, though! Blushing!” Maia grinned. “That’s adorable.”

“She’s gorgeous,” Julian confirmed. “I don’t know why she puts up with me.”

“Probably because you’re a cutie and really up front about the girlfriend thing.” Maia nodded her head. “I’d set a bloke on fire if I found out he was with someone, after we shagged.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t sleep with anyone else. I figure if I’m honest up front, fewer feelings are hurt. I don’t get people who lead other people on anyway.” He ran his fingers nervously through his hair, sending it sticking up at odd angles. It didn’t make him look less pretty.

“I like that.” She thought about it a little bit. Really, it was a good way to be. Honest. She couldn’t help but grin at him though. “She’s really got a catch, though.”

“She fixed my nose when someone broke it.” He chuckled at the memory. “I came into the ER with a concussion and she mended me up. I don’t think I’d have hit on her if I weren’t concussed.”

“Wow. Behold the power of concussions! I’ll have to try that sometime. Might work better than being nockered.” Maia grinned at him. She wanted to meet his bird now.

“Apparently I’m cuter when I’m semicoherent.” Julian chuckled, wondering what girls saw in him anyway.

“You? Cuter than you are now? Impossible!”

That just made Julian snort.

She gave Julian a cheeky grin.
