Melanie had been pleased to receive the text from Lysander confirming that he was still good to go on their hike and to arrange a meeting place. She liked him; his creativity and talent was obvious and it reminded her slightly of her sister but his willingness to hike and camp was what had drawn her to him. She loved being outdoors and active, soon getting restless and fidgety if she had to sit for too long. Though she had gotten better since starting university.
Standing in front of the shop they had agreed on she had her backpack on her back and a smile on her face. The weather was also being kind, it was a nice warm day with a gentle breeze. Practically perfect.
Lysander was bouncy. He had a full weekend planned. This with Melanie the interesting, then the grunion run with his mom that night and the next morning. It would be a fun weekend and he would gladly lose the work for the fun and the people. He nodded as he agreed with himself.
He spotted her ahead and smiled wider “Melanieeeee!” His called her name long and loud and grinned as he headed for her, bouncing somewhat. He liked the outdoors and the feel of being around nature. And she was interesting and fun. And curious!
Melanie laughed and waved as Lysander called her name, almost everybody in the street was looking at them. “Morning” she said with a grin, “I think it’s safe to say you’re a morning person” she teased him.
Lysander smiled and moved to her. “I am a time with people person.” He grinned and poked her slightly. He was also a touchy person, a lot. “And you?”
“I’m an outdoor person” she said after squeaking slightly when he poked her, she wasn’t overly tactile but found she didn’t mind at all which was interesting in itself, “Especially with the right company”
“I do love the bare nature. The naked outdoors.” He nodded. “Yeah? Cool. Then lead on and show me these outdoors. I want to see it all.” He waggled his eyebrows at her, his voice a wobbling song of various tones.
Melanie led him down to the makeshift bus stop which took people to the bottom of the ridge she was planning to take him up that morning. It was a quick ride and once there she took him up the path only the experienced hikers knew about as it didn’t look like a proper path for the first twenty metres or so.
“This is one of my favorite places to come” she told him, “It’s amazing to see it change with the seasons”
He followed along, staying close and curious about her life and her ideas. “How did you get into hiking?” He smiled softly, then glanced around and back to her. “This looks amazing!” He liked the lesser traveled paths, and seeing what they revealed.
“I’ve always loved being outside” Melanie replied, “When I was eight we went camping and I tried every sport and outdoor excursion I could. The views you can see are just breathtaking”
Lysander nodded as they walked along. “Amazing. It sounds like you really belong out here.” He smirked at that idea. “I’ve thought about living outside before, going native. Never quite did it though.”
“Oh I think that would be amazing” Melanie told him, “Can you imagine waking up to this each morning?” she gestured around, what an incredible idea.
Lysander looked around and nodded, breathing it in. “I think it could be amazing. Might not be practical, but it would be fantastic for a little while at least.” Lysander chuckled and grabbed one of her hands, squeezing it. “This place is beautiful. Thank you.”
“Practicalities are overrated” she replied with a grin, “I’m sure it could be a nice amount of time before the need to return to reality intruded”
She squeezed his hand in return, “You’re welcome, thank you for joining me”
Lysander smiled at her, grinning and feeling bold out here. He walked in silence for a few minutes, then nodded, speaking quietly. "It feels nice to just let go of the world and find sheer magic in the wilderness. "
Melanie nodded, "There's definitely a calming influence out here. A sense of peace you don't find in many places"
Lysander smiled at the ideas. “Very true. It feels warm, alive in a way the city isn’t.” He grinned wider, and picked up a rock, and hurled it far off. He listened a moment, then turned to her and started to talk, before there was a yowl. and he jumped, then facepalmed.
“Er, oops.”
Melanie couldn't stop the burst of laughter from escaping. "Oh dear, I think the peace is broken" she managed between giggles.
Lysander had to agree and feel bad about it, but then stuck out his tongue at her, and made a face. He grinned anyway. Oops. “Er, yes. Let’s not go that way.” He chuckled.
She grinned at him when he stuck his tongue out at her, “Probably best not to” she agreed, “Can’t believe you managed that, in the middle of nowhere too” she teased him.
Lysander shrugged. “I seem to have the oddest luck. Weird things happen around me all the time, always have. From birth to death, the saying goes, weirdness follows.” He smiled to her, bouncy, and waggled his eyebrows again. “The best and most interesting people come into my shop. And I have always found that I have some of the wildest adventures.” Which he liked.
“I think that sounds rather wonderful” she told him smiling, “Means things are never dull anyway. I’m hoping my life will get more adventurous once I finish my degree” and she only had a couple of assignments and exams left. “Your shop is amazing, so I’m not surprised interesting people get drawn to it” she added.
Lysander bounced a little, and nodded, smiling at her. “I’m sure it will. Just give it time! Life is full of adventures. And sex. And fun. You just have to find which you like best.” He nodded. He blushed at her compliment and smiled wider. “You should feel free to find your way in more often.” He nodded.
Melanie laughed, his enthusiasm was kind of infectious, “I’m sure I’ll have a great time finding out” she smiled, a light blush over her cheeks. “Oh I definitely will, I could spend all day in there watching you work. You’ll start getting sick of me I’m sure” she teased.
Lysander grinned. “You’re welcome to come by anytime. I like people.” Most of the time. Sometimes. Rarely.
He smiled a little. “I doubt I’ll get tired of you.”
"Thanks" Melanie smiled softly, "Now shall we try this way?" she indicated the path in the opposite direction to the one where the rock had been thrown.
Lysander nodded as he peered at the path, and grinned. “Looks good! Let’s go find ourselves some wilderness.’ he bounced, feeling energetic and happy, and full of life. Good company and good fun and a good place, definitely his idea of a good time.
FIN.
