It had been a while since Link had sent foot in Navi’s nursery. Too long. Even if it realistically wasn’t Link’s fault for being a busy farmer. He also wasn’t especially used to having friends who didn’t live on his own street, on neighboring farms. Most of the time, it was as difficult to get away as it was unnecessary.
But on his way out to the farmer’s market that week, Link decided to leave a little early and drop in on his friend. He had things to talk to Navi about, related to his dreams as much as his waking life. In fact, they were a little difficult to tell apart lately.
She was starting to show in a way that most people noticed. Wearing a dress instead of her usual jeans and t-shirt, she hummed as she made her way around the nursery to sing to the plants, kiss their leaves, and make sure they knew she was around. She was still wondering how to tell Zelda that the dreams were at least a little real.
Yeah, it had definitely been too long, because last time Link had seen Navi she hadn’t looked pregnant at all. Now she definitely did. It actually looked pretty on her, but that was a compliment Link wasn’t sure how to give, other than, “Well, look at you,” which he said as he entered the room.
She grinned, turning to face him and fluttering off the ground to fly toward him and wrap her arms around him. “Oh my god Link I’m so happy and you KISSED ZELLIE EEEEE!” She bounced a little again, clapping her hands together.
Link blinked quickly, a little surprised. “Wait, how did you know? You’ve been talking with Zelda, haven’t you?”
“We have tea every Friday,” Navi grinned, bumping her hip lightly with his. “Don’t worry, I haven’t said anything about the dreams yet.”
Link scratched his head, standing still while Navi moved a few steps ahead of him. He hurried forward to catch up. “She did have a dream, though. She told me. But she thought it was just a normal dream. I didn’t know what to say.”
“She said you saved her from something, I asked about Epona, she said you weren’t on a horse and I was all TEE HEE MAYBE SOMEDAY and talked about horse symbolism in … dreams. Gosh, I’m awful.” Navi facepalmed.
“Horse symbolism?” Link asked. He lifted an eyebrow and the corner of his mouth turned up as well.
“They stand for fidelity in dreams,” Navi shrugged. “She’s into dream analysis. I didn’t want to let her know that Epona was a gift from another girl. You’re lucky I love you!”
Link’s face shows a quick grin and a quick grimace. “Yeah, let’s leave Malon out of this,” he said with a chuckle.
Looking around the shop, it seemed a lot had changed for the spring season. The stock was larger, the plants were more lush. He touched a green leaf as he passed and enjoyed the cool sensation against his finger-pads. “Looks like you’ve been busy.”
“Oh, you know how I have to keep up with mother nature.” Navi smiled, reaching out to take Link’s hand and press it to her belly button. “In more ways than one!” The baby was thunking against her tummy insistently.
Link made a funny surprised sound, startled by how quickly she grabbed his hand. He’d never felt a baby kick before, except a baby cow. This was something completely different. “Oh wow...” he breathed, as his cheeked turned rather pink.
Navi grinned. “Right? She’s thumping away.” She wrinkled her nose, scrunching her face up when the baby got a little too enthusiastic. “Just sometimes on my bladder.”
Link couldn't help but briefly wonder if he'd ever be a father himself one day. But he was still too young to entertain thoughts like that for very long. "You know it's a girl?" he asked.
“I’m pretty sure. I just … can tell.” She sighed to herself, running her hands over her stomach. “But even if I’m wrong, he’ll be lovely.”
Maybe the reason why Link thought Navi looked cute with the belly was because she'd always been so maternal to begin with. He was still blushing a little, looking at her. "Well, I hope it's a girl because you already have a boy."
Navi smiled, reaching up to stroke Link’s cheek. “You’re always going to be my boy, Link. Always always. Even when I’ve got a baby. I promise.”
Like smiled, silently realizing that Navi was the really the closest thing to a mom that he had.
