Nate was nervous but hopeful after his conversation with Elaine Mallory. He hoped that Cora would accept him as he was, even if it meant things were a little awkward now. He cared for her, and she was his best friend, and he hoped she could still see he was the same. He smiled to himself as he walked to her room and knocked on her door. She was, supposedly, inside and so he waited, nibbling his lips even more.
Corazon opened the door expecting her mother, so she was at least looking up, but the face she saw wasn't the one she'd expected. Either Nate had hit a growth spurt, or he was older. Or both. But Cora smiled. And then she grabbed his hands, as if to check and make sure they were still made of flesh.
She stretched her hand out, palm to palm with his, comparing the difference in size. "Are those guitar calluses?"
“Hiya, Cora,” he let her grab and move his hands, and he chuckled at her actions and words. “Yeah, looks like. I think my body is a new one, not the one I had back in dreams, or in the future, New body. new life.”
He waggled his hand in hers and then poked her. “How ya doing?”
Cora nodded. She hadn’t seen what he looked like in the future, but this body looked like she imagined Nate would look, grown up. She grinned, and bumped against his side with her shoulder. “I’m okay. How are you?”
“Well, there are a few side-effects, but other than that, I am very good. And happy to see you. Did you dream last night?” He smiled and bumped her back, gently, grinning. He was glad she was okay with him, still.
Of course she was okay with him! It was Nate! And she’d made a promise!
Corazon grinned back. “I did. More fighting with boys. I’m trying to avenge my mother--well, Anya is. And then I got lectured by Spider-man. He gave me the Great Responsibility speech.”
Nate chuckled. “Yeah?” He wondered when he should tell her about Peter, but somehow, telling her now sounded like a bad idea. He nodded. Sounds like fun. He poked her mind with his, gentle, warm, and grinned. “Did it sound stern?”
“Yeah.” Cora smiled. Now Nate’s outside voice matched his inside one a little more closely. “It tried to sound stern. I’m not sure if Anya was listening very well.”
Nate smiled at her, and bounced. “Smart girl. Hopefully she got the important part and just forgets the rest.” He nodded. Hanging out with Cora was always fun. “Oh! I got you something.” He pulled out a small wrapped package and held it out. Inside was a small necklace with a spider inside a magic circle, all in silver.
“Oh!” Cora’s eyes lit up as Nate produced the gift. She hadn’t expected anything, but he was always full of sweet, special, little surprises. Same old Nate. She opened the package, oohing and ahhing over the necklace as she held it up to catch the light. “It’s perfect!” she exclaimed, “She’s got a magic circle for a web!”
She hugged him, the necklace still clutched in her hand as she beamed up at him. “You’re the best friend ever.”
Nate hugged her back. “You are my best friend, Cora. I like making you smile.” He poked her lightly. “And it only makes sense. Two heritages, mixing. Spider and Wizard.” He nodded.
Smiling, she stepped back, and fastened the necklace around her neck. The blue exoskeleton from her dreams had yet to manifest, but then, she hadn’t really been in any dangerous situation where she might need it. And that was okay. She had time to figure out her spider-ness.
“I’m glad you came over.”
“Me too. Want to work on a puzzle? Seems like the sort of time to do that.” Nate nodded, feeling like things were okay and would only get more so. He was where he belonged with whom he belonged with, and nothing would change that.
“Yeah!” Cora nodded, and bounced. Who cared if she would never be as tall as Nate again? Not her. As long as he still wanted to be best friends, she was perfectly happy to cling to him like a spider on a wall.
FIN.
