Once she had told Sirius about her engagement the next person she simply had to tell was Remus. He was one of her best friends and along with Mac and Sirius one of the most important men in her life. So, as she had with her cousin, she took a chance and hoped he would be in.
She found she couldn’t stop grinning so with a wide smile across her face she knocked on his door.
It was the end of the third quarter and Remus was going over his grade book in preparation to submit grades for report cards. He was actually just finishing up when he heard the knock at the door. He wasn’t expecting anyone and figured that most of his friends would call or text before coming by, but there were a few who probably would simply stop by without calling, so he assumed it must have been one of them. Getting to his feet, he closed his gradebook and headed to the door in the livingroom, “Tonks.” He said upon opening the door and moved aside to let her in, “Please come in.” She seemed like she was in an extremely good mood, but then again, Tonks usually had a smile on her face. Well, except when she had been trying to get him and Sirius to talk.
“Hi Remus” Tonks greeted as she stepped into the house, “Thanks. I hope I’m not bothering you, I went to Sirius’ first and then had to come to you and I would have called but it was too late by the time I thought of it” she babbled slightly before giving him a smile, “Anyway, I have news” and with that she held out her left hand to show off her engagement ring. Apparently she was really bad at waiting.
Remus closed the door behind her as Tonks stepped into his apartment and he was about to offer her a drink when she began talking. When she mentioned she’d been at Sirius’, he was worried for a moment, unsure of exactly why she would have gone there and then come to see him, but soon her hand was thrust out in front of him and his brows rose. That was an engagement ring on Tonks’ finger. “You’re engaged?” He quickly thought back to how long it had been since he’d come back to town and when she had told him she was seeing someone new. Only four and a half months earlier she’d been infatuated with him and now she was engaged? “Haven’t you only been dating for two or three months? Isn’t this a little fast?”
Perhaps it had been because of his situation with Sirius, but Remus had never been able to figure out how people could decide that they were ready for a commitment such as marriage after only a few weeks of dating.
Well that wasn’t the excitement she wanted. She pouted at him as she swatted his arm, “Remus” she admonished, “That’s not how you’re supposed to react, the acceptable response is ‘How wonderful Tonks, I’m so happy for you’ or something of that sort”
To be fair her dreams had played a bigger part in her feelings for Remus than she had realised but now she was much happier with their friendship. And in truth what she had felt for him was nothing like the all encompassing love she felt for Mac. He was her everything and she knew he always would be.
Crossing her arms over her chest she looked at Remus, “I’m in love, like properly happily ever after till death do us part love” she told him, “Now congratulate me so we can have tea and catch up”
Remus was still completely in the dark about their future in the dreams and only time would tell what exactly he’d do when he did find out. For now, the last thing he wanted to do was upset Tonks, “Congratulations. You know that I’m only trying to look out for you. I simply want to make sure that you’re not rushing into anything.”
Tonks smiled at him and gave him a hug, “I know” she told him, “But I’m happy and everything in me is telling me this is right. That’s gotta count for something right?”
Remus hugged her back, nodding, “I suppose.” Remus had, had the same feeling when Sirius had first kissed him that night at that party and look how that had worked out. Something told him though that no matter what Remus said, there was no changing Tonks’ mind about this. She was part Black after all and they were extremely stubborn, as she had demonstrated when she’d tricked him and Sirius into talking to one another. “What kind of tea would you like?” Remus still had more than enough varieties of tea that he could probably open his own tea shop. He gestured for her to follow him into the kitchen.
He was definitely right that Tonks had inherited the Black family stubbornness trait, she knew she’d made the right decision both in saying yes and getting Remus and Sirius together to talk.
“Surprise me” she told him grinning, “I trust you”
Remus put the kettle on and got two mugs down, “So, you had told me a little about this boyfriend....excuse me, fiance...the last time you were here, but I don’t believe you told me how you had met.” While he was still worried for Tonks about how quickly things had progressed with her boyfriend, Remus wanted to know more about him.
"He's my roommates brother" she told Remus, happy to talk about Mac, "He moved to the area and dropped by to surprise her then invited me round to dinner so I thought why not? Best decision I ever made, he's so sweet and caring Remus, and so very hot" she added cheekily.
As Tonks talked, Remus got the tea ready. He was happy that she was so happy and really did hope that it worked out for her, because the last thing he wanted was for her to get hurt, because it would be ten times worse than when he let her down. Not to mention, things would get awkward between her and her roommate, because Remus assumed that they must have been very good friends. When the tea was finished, he turned and set both mugs on the table then sat down, “I’ll have to meet him soon to judge for myself.” He was referring to the part about him being sweet and caring and didn’t even realize that it could come off as him judging whether or not he was hot.
None of those concerns were really in Tonks’ mind, she was happy and in love and that was that. She’d always been a fairly optimistic woman.
Tonks laughed at his comment, knowing full well what he really meant but not being able to resist teasing, “Hands off Remus” she smirked, “You can have my cousin but I draw the line at my fiance. Feel free to ogle though” she winked.
"That's not at all what I meant and you know it." He couldn't help but flush slightly. He had no idea what was going on with him and Sirius at the moment, but he wasn't about to bring that up. "Are you going to get married soon or have a long engagement?" He knew that the engagement was still new and they probably hadn't made any plans yet, but he needed to take the conversation away from him and Sirius.
“I know but you can’t say something like that and not expect me to say something” she grinned. Tonks could see what he was doing and while she understood she still wanted to run her idea past him. “Soon I think” she told him, “We haven’t really discussed it too much yet. AJ, my roommate, is getting married in May so I guess we’ll focus on that before planning ours” She was fairly easy in that regard, she didn’t want to drag it out but she also didn’t feel the need to rush.
“I suppose not.” Remus sipped his tea as he listened to Tonks and nodded, “It’s probably for the best to not rush into it.” He had heard of far too many people who got engaged and got married right away or didn’t get engaged at all and simply eloped and it never ended well. Not everyone could be as lucky as James and Lily had been.
Tonks shrugged, “I don’t want to be engaged forever but I’m not about to steal AJ’s thunder” she replied, “I can wait until after her wedding”
She smiled before fiddling with her ring, in what was fast becoming a nervous habit, “I’m thinking of asking Sirius to give me away” she told him softly, “But I’ve not mentioned it to him yet”
Remus smiled, “I think he’d like that.” Remus knew that the family dynamics within the Black/Tonks family were rather complicated, so he didn’t ask why she’d ask Sirius instead of her father. “I don’t see why he would say no at any rate.” He took a sip of his tea, watching as she fiddled with her ring.
Tonks smile was bright at Remus’ assurance, it wasn’t that she didn’t want her parents there it was just that she’d always felt a connection with Sirius and he’d always been the one to believe in her. All she knew was that it felt right to ask him and she tended to go with her feelings.
“Thanks Remus” she said, “It’s good to know you think it’s okay”
“It’s going to be your wedding, you should be able to do what you’d like.” Remus sipped his tea, “Either way, it’s bound to be interesting with the rest of your family in attendance.” He couldn’t help but wonder if she’d invite Bellatrix, but he wasn’t about to ask.
“Oh god yeah” Tonks nodded, taking a sip of her own tea, “Never a dull moment with that lot” Though in all honesty she hadn’t even thought about who she would and wouldn’t be inviting. She was just still enjoying the thrill of being engaged.
“Might need to have an ambulance on call or a bouncer standing by.” Remus could only hope that nothing crazy would happen at Tonks’ wedding and that it would be the happy event that she deserved. “I would offer my services in any way they’re needed, but I’m afraid I would probably be the last person one would ask for advice when it came to planning a wedding.”
"If anybody dares interrupt my wedding or cause any kind of scene they will be the ones needing an ambulance" Tonks replied with a smirk, the amount of people there with wands should be a deterrent from scene causing. "Besides Sirius is better than a bouncer, he'd glare people into submission" she laughed.
Remus laughed as well, recalling various examples of exactly what Tonks had described, “Now that is very true. He can be rather intimidating when he wants to be.” Remus probably knew that better than anyone. Not that Sirius had ever tried to intimidate him, but he had been around plenty of times when Sirius intimidated others.
And if anybody threatened to ruin her wedding they had better watch out, she was his favorite cousin after all. "I'm sure everything will be fine" Tonks said, "it'll all go smoothly I'm sure I will have plenty of people to make sure of it"
“You can be sure that I will be one of those people.” Whether he had magic at the time or not, Remus would do what he needed to make sure that Tonk’s wedding went well if anything should happen during the ceremony or the reception afterwards.
Tonks gave him a bright happy smile at that, “Thank you Remus” she said, “That means a lot” She was so very glad that she had such wonderful friends and family.
