It wasn’t nearly as potent a potion as Severus could have made back in his own world. It didn’t have the same consistency or color that a properly brewed Felix Felicis potion would have. But it was still a Luck Potion, and would have similar, if a bit dulled, effects.
Severus had vial of the stuff in his hand as he walked into Gold’s shop. It was only fitting that he deliver a potion created with the tools he’d purchased here from this shop. He moved over to the counter where the register was, and set the stoppered vial down gently on the glass.
At the same time, Robert Gold (Gold to everyone but a select few, thanks) stepped out from his back room, his eyes instantly meeting Severus’ as he did so. He wasn’t the type to have many friends, particularly since he’d gotten into politics. He could probably count them all on one hand -- yet, he was starting to see Mr. Snape as such, as well.
“Hello,” he greeted, flitting some of his longer hair out of his eyes as he moved toward the counter. “Right on time.”
“I think you’ll find I’m almost always on time.” Unless he had his daughter with him. Daisy tended to slow things down considerably. “I brought this for you,” Severus said. He, too, was low in the friends department. He had Romana and Lily, and Regulus. That may have been it. Surprising as it was, he was starting to branch out a little more, Gold and Remus now possibly part of his circles.
“Hopefully it will bring you some luck.”
Gold picked up the little vial, holding it into the light and examining it thoughtfully. Snape had said earlier that it was the sort of potion that brought good luck -- he could see many uses for something like that. “Does it have a shelf life?” He asked, curious.
“I’d try to use it within the first year,” Severus said, considering the question. “Though, I suppose like a love potion, it will grow more potent with age.” That was something to keep in mind with a lot of his Potions in this world. It was possible that even without the correct, magical ingredients, they could become more powerful as time went by.
Gold considered those words, and then gave a half nod. It was funny that Snape compared it to other things -- love potions. Funny, since until recently Mr. Gold would never have expected either of those things to exist. It all made a strange sort of sense though, and he had to wonder why he took the news so naturally.
“Maybe I’ll have to wait until a bad day, then,” he said, only half joking.
“Or you could try putting one drop each day in your morning coffee,” Sev suggested, though he was mostly kidding. (Honestly, would one drop do much? Maybe?) “Then you might never have a bad day.”
“What’s the fun in that?” Gold asked, quirking an eyebrow and leaning against his counter. “It takes a really bad day to appreciate a good one, or so I’ve heard.”
Severus paused for a moment and considered that. He’d had some really bad days. In his dreams, mostly--a thought which made his left arm twitch. He brought his right hand over to hold his wrist, keeping the mark buried against him. Even though his sleeve covered it, and most of the time he could forget about it, it was still there. “Then perhaps you shall have to wait for a very bad day. Then you’ll appreciate the luck the potion gives you a bit more?”
Gold noted the gesture, but said nothing. It seemed a lot of people here had things to hide -- and were he interested enough, Gold might work to uncover those secrets. For now though, he was not. “That’s what I was saying,” he agreed.
“Then that sounds like a plan.” Severus said, feeling a bit silly now that he’d jerked his hand so. He cleared his throat. “Nothing new I’d be interested in, then?” He added, turning to glance around the shop.
The shop owner considered that for a moment, eyes flitting about his shop as he thought on it. “No chemistry things,” he admitted. Those weren’t the sorts of things he got in regularly. “So, not really. Not unless you’re interested in globes or musical instruments.”
Severus thought about that for a moment. "Show me the globes." He said. It might be fun to show off to Daisy. The antique ones were interesting, and there was always something to learn about how people used to look at the world. Besides it might look good in his makeshift potions lab in the garage.
Gold gave a half shrug and a tilted sort of smile that went with it before he pushed himself away from his counter and lead Severus over to the other side of the store -- leaning on his cane all the way.
The globes were there -- varying in size, he had about a half a dozen of them; they were old, and had that characteristic yellow-brown of glass, brass and painted wood. Honestly, they were lovely things.
They were quite lovely. “Do you know much about them?” He asked, stepping forward to inspect. Who created them, when, with what materials and at what time were all rather interesting tidbits, and might help Severus decide if he should make the purchase. Honestly, any one of them would look wonderful in his Potions Laboratory.
“Some, not everything.” Gold rattled off a bit of information about each -- time frames of make, and the like. He was well versed in antiques, obviously, but tended to only do thorough backgrounds of things he was interested in, himself. “Personally, I think the wooden ones have the most charm to them,” he admitted.
Severus nodded. “What’s the price on this one?” He asked, stepping over and running his hand over the frame of one of the wooden ones. The color was fading a bit due to age and weathering, but that gave it its charm. He could absolutely imagine it in his Potions Lab garage.
Same difference, right? Minus the dungeons? Sure. Gold quoted a price that was more than fair and leaned forward on his cane some. Hey, he didn’t have many friends, might as well be honest sometimes - not to mention Snape had just made him a luck potion. Presumably.
More or less. The dungeons might be nice for the Severus in the dreams, but the one in this world had a little girl to consider. She needed sunlight and fresh air, things that the Potions Master in his dreams seemingly recoiled from.
Severus’ eyebrows raised at the quoted price. Apparently it helped to have friends in high places. “That’s more than fair.” Way to go, stating the obvious. “I’ll take it.” He said, then ran his hand over the face of the globe once more.
And Gold was in a higher place than Snape probably knew. He’d be higher yet once he actually started dreaming, understanding, knowing. But for now this was enough. “Be a dear,” he said, gesturing for Snape to pick up the globe and follow him to the register. “We’ll find you a nice box for it.”
Severus was a young and fully capable man. He lifted the globe into his arms (after all, it wasn’t that heavy, just cumbersome) and carried it along behind Gold toward the register. “Thank you,” he added. Coming into this shop was becoming a bit of a treat for him. He always came home with something interesting to show Romana or Daisy.
