Anthony was very fond of working. He enjoyed working hard, and enjoyed reaping the benefits of it, and he couldn’t really pass up the chance to hopefully impart some of that wisdom upon another person. Besides, he was always getting nagged at for not doing enough for the community - surely this would count toward that, right?
He showed up to his office a bit earlier than usual that day. While he knew everything would already be where it should be (people just didn’t move things from their right spots, lest they face his wrath), but it comforted him to check all the same. He sent one of the new boys out to grab some breakfast-type things, as to not seem a poor host, then twirled around in his office chair while he waited for Margaery’s arrival.
Margaery had been extremely pleased when she had received a positive response from Mr Crowley, she was enjoying this module more than her others so was putting additional effort into ensuring she got as good a grade as she could. And, of course, there was the additional benefit of getting to know somebody in investment as Margaery had many of those herself and was always on the lookout for new opportunities. Though of course it was unknown by most that this attractive young law student was actually a millionaire.
Entering the building she logged her arrival at the front desk before being shown to the office. She was dressed smartly, her clothes being expensive but not obviously so.
When Anthony saw her approaching the office, he stood and greeted her at the door, thanking the young lady who showed her to him. He put on a smile and held out his hand.
“Miss Tyrell, I assume,” he said. “Anthony J Crowley, a pleasure to meet you.”
“Please call me Margaery” she requested, “And thank you for agreeing to meet with me, it is very kind of you. I imagine you must be busy”
“Oh, it was hardly anything,” he assured her, flapping a hand. “I’m more than happy to do it.” After all, for new businesses, it was important to start developing a certain name and reputation. Certainly nothing bad would come of it, at any rate. “If anything, I should be flattered that of all your options, I seemed most satisfactory. Come in, have a seat. Would you like coffee or tea, perhaps?”
“Your website was most informative” Margaery told him, “And it is quite unique to have such specialty in online profile management, though I am sure you are aware of this”
She took a seat, “A coffee would be lovely if it’s not too much trouble”
“Well, in this day and age, people prefer the simplest and easiest way of doing things. It’s something we felt important to jump on,” he said, walking over to the other side of his office where he had a personal coffee maker. It was an important office necessity to him. “While we do offer the traditional aspects of investment, in a high pace world where the markets change on a dime, it’s good to know you can manage profiles at the same rate.”
"Oh I absolutely agree" Margaery said, nodding, "Especially with the new generation of investors who are so much more comfortable and acclimatised to the online world and are used to 24/7 access no matter where they are in the world"
“Exactly.” He finished with her coffee and placed it on a coaster on his desk, then sat in his chair across from her. “And I’ve never really been the sort to scoff at progress. I embrace everything new. It keeps things a bit exciting, you know?”
“Thank you” she said as he placed the coffee in front of her, “Oh absolutely, change is good although not always easy to accept” she replied, “But still it is good for your business that you are willing to go with progress, I fear those who do not will struggle to continue”
“All the better for me if they do,” Anthony said, cheerily. “All right then. Let’s get down to business, shall we?”
Margaery smiled at that refreshingly honest statement. “Of course” she inclined her head, “I’m interested to know how you, as the director of an investment company, find working within the financial regulations not only of the United States but, as many of your clients are international, the differing regulations in the EU, Australia and so forth” She had her notebook in her lap, her clear elegant handwriting filling the pages.
He swivelled a bit on his chair, looking thoughtful. It wasn’t something he’d ever thought much on - of course, he thought about it when he dealt directly with it, but it wasn’t every really present in his mind.
“It’s a combination of things, I suppose. As I said, I like adapting, and I’m good at it. I also had the good fortune of growing up with business minded parents, one of whom is still a practicing lawyer, so I’ve got a keen awareness on following within the guidelines.” Anthony took a sip from his own coffee. “It’s certainly a challenge, but I have a lot of confidence in my abilities and in the team I work with.”
Margaery made notes in her book, asking questions here and there and giving example scenarios which he answered clearly. “It sounds like you’ve picked great people to work for you” she said as she finished the notes relating to her last question, “It’s not often that the whole working team understand and work within established rules, especially in finance. Somebody always wants to prove themselves as better, or maybe that is my cynicism showing” she added with a smile.
Well, Anthony thought to himself, that’s because people sort of learned not to cross him. When provoked, he could have a wicked temper, and he wasn’t terribly forgiving with it. But he took her compliment to heart and preened under it.
“The professional world is full of cynicism. But I have a very extensive criteria for who I like working for me, so it’s lovely to hear it’s working well.” He flashed a large smile.
“Very well I believe” Margaery agreed, “Were I looking around for investment services yours would definitely be a company I would meet with”
“I’m flattered. Truly.” And he looked it, too. “We’d be completely glad to have you, and, rest assured, we’d handle your portfolio incredibly well.”
“Oh I’m sure you would” she nodded, “My portfolio is currently handled by a company in Sweden, though I believe it may soon be prudent to change that” As easy at it was to handle things from here she was uneasy with her the ease at which her parents could interfere. The company she used knew her family well and, though she hoped not, she wouldn’t put it past her family to use their influence.
“Of course,” Anthony said. He didn’t prise, because that would be rude and unprofessional, but he knew that most young people seeking to change their investments was due to family involvement. “If you ever have any questions about it, I’ll be more than glad to answer. Here.” He took a business card from his desk and passed it over.
She took the card with a smile, “Thank you very much” she said, “I’ll be sure to be in touch” And she would, it would be stupid to not take the opportunity now that it had presented itself.
“Fantastic.” He sat back in his chair, feeling rather accomplished with himself. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”
“I think I’m good for now” she told him smiling, “Am I okay to re-contact you if I have any further questions?” she asked.
“Absolutely. Feel free to e-mail me, or, if it’s during my office hours, my card has my extension number on it so you can dial through directly.” Anthony stood up, holding out his hand. “It was a sincere pleasure being able to sit down with you. I hope I’ve managed to help you with your module.”
“That’s wonderful, thank you” Margaery said as she rose too, “And thank you so much for your time. It’s been invaluable, really”
“You’ll flatter me.” He walked around his desk to escort her to his door. “If you’re at least a bit curious about the changeover of your investments, you can speak to our lovely receptionist. She’s got a few things she could give you to look over, or you can schedule an appointment to come and sit with me. It might be worth even just talking about, so you know your options.”
Margaery nodded, "I think I will" she said, it was time for her to make the changes especially as California was becoming her home more now. "Its been a pleasure meeting you" she told him sincerely before leaving the office, making sure to schedule an appointment with the receptionist to return as a client.
