Who: Kasumi and Wrex
What: Surprise visit
Where: Wrex and Kasumi's place at the Ranch
When: Saturday, lunchtime
Warning: PG, fluffy cute.
Wrex felt like he finally had some space to breath. Between Alma’s baby and a sudden influx of new kids, things had gotten beyond hectic. He wanted to spend some time to collect his thoughts, but he didn’t want to spend that time alone.
So he ambushed Kasumi with (store-bought) cupcakes, a wry smile, and a bottle of wine.
Since moving to Wrex's place, Kasumi found he had a lot more time during the day. It was true, she ended up volunteering at the Ranch a lot more, but between the saved travel time, and how easy and comfortable it was, it was worth it.
Plus, there were surprise lunch visits from Wrex. Kasumi smiled up at her Krogan. "Hey, you."
“Hey...” His face seemed to melt at the way she smiled at him. He still felt, sometimes, like they were walking on eggshells after the miscarriage, but he didn’t want to rock the boat. To mix metaphors. “I need a break and I can’t think of anyone I want to spend it more with.”
Kasumi had made the conscious decision to be done with eggshells. Hell, when Harbinger had threatened to make her miscarry again, Kasumi had felt more like laughing than crying--though, that probably wasn't the healthiest reaction, either. Still, it wasn't anything she held against Wrex, and it only flashed in her mind for a moment when she saw the wine. Then she'd pushed the thought away, determined to have a nice meal.
"You were just hoping you'd catch me in the shower," she teased with a wink. She leaned up for a kiss, always happy to see Wrex.
“You’re learning.” Wrex grinned, kissing her back and then sitting next to her. “Been thinking about something...” He was worried that she was becoming some kind of kept woman, and he didn’t want that for her. “Maybe you should consider applying for one of the paid jobs out here. I feel like I took you away from something.”
Kasumi tilted her head "You don't think I'm busy enough?" True, she'd hired on a part-time bartender so she didn't have to work every night. Originally, it had been a transitional move so that she'd have a long-term plan when the baby came, but she'd kept the bartender on. It gave her a few 'date nights' with Wrex, so they weren't always missing eachother. She still worked more nights than not, though.
Kasumi shrugged. "I don't know about taking on a regular thing. I still feel like I should be doing more as manager. Like, I keep imagining there's a big stack of spreadsheets and math formulas I'm going to discover that I should've been doing for the last three months." It seemed too easy right now. Something was bound to go wrong. She didn't even want to think about taxes. "I mean, I could probably take on a weekend thing, but I'd rather spend that with you." That was the point of finding a part-time person, after all.
Wrex smiled, nodding his head. “Okay. I just don’t want you to feel like you’re not busy enough, and I was trying to not be selfish. I’d rather be selfish. And maybe I wanted more excuses to have you around.” He still had to pinch himself that she wanted to be around, and he still worried a little that one or both of them might flee.
Kasumi smiled. She didn't mind him being selfish. If she didn't need to sleep, she'd spend the day working at the Ranch, prancing around in shorts for Wrex. "I think you're having a hard time believing you've got it this good," she said, her tone playful. She wasn't really as cocky as she sounded; Their situation wasn't Wrex's dream, and she knew that. Still, things were comfortable, which wasn't something either of them were used to.
Kasumi + shorts was a fine, fine thing indeed.... His smile turned into a grin, “How could you tell?” It really was difficult to believe it. She could have anyone she wanted, but she wanted him. Big, tough, and he couldn’t believe he was all that handsome. But one didn’t look gift Japanese women in the mouth. Well they did, but...okay that was a sayings failure.
She could tell because, more often than not, Wrex looked like he was waiting for the other shoe to drop. It almost seemed like he worried more now that they were living together. Like he was always afraid he would come home after work one day and find that she was gone. He apparently tried to combat this by bringing her surprise presents, and she had taken to leaving her things draped around the living room so he could immediately see she was still living there, even if she couldn't get straight to the door.
Kasumi would never turn down cupcakes, though, and she just loved that grin. She shrugged, smiling. "Women's intuition. Chocolate?" she guessed.
He needed to work on that, and he knew it. Wrex could trust Kasumi, he knew that on a deep level. But experience had taught him that good things and him just didn’t go together.
But he was working on it. He still liked to bring her presents. “Close. Cupcakes and wine. Even told the staff not to bother me unless it was an emergency.”
"Ooh, we're on lockdown?" Kasumi smiled. "All this time to ourselves, hm?" Kasumi was just trying to stay laid back about the whole thing. It didn't upset her that Wrex worried. She didn't take it personally. There was a small part of her that wasn't used to things working out, either. Her experience had been more about the people she loved dying, though, and luckily, krogans were damn hard to kill. Knowing that helped her relax.
"Chocolate cupcakes?"
He laughed. “Chocolate cupcakes.” Wrex presented them with a flourish, or at least as much flourish as the man could muster, who wasn’t all that used to flourish or fancy. He was more likely to be found grilling meat and grunting than doing anything fancy, but for Kasumi he’d make an exception.
Even grilled meat could be fancy if you used the right garnish. Kasumi made for pretty good garnish. She appreciated the effort he was making. Surprise cupcakes were never a bad thing. “Good choice,” she said, leaning up to give him a kiss.
“Well, I’m known for good choices. I’m dating you.” Wrex tried to wrap his arm around her and not lose some cupcakes, and managed to smush one between them.
Kasumi laughed, stepping back and looking down at their smeared shirts. “I suppose we’ll have to get out of these,” she said, giving him a wink.
Grinning, Wrex reached for Kasumi. He would happily take care of that for the both of them.
