Who: The Twins + Tonks + Big Mac
What: Celebratory drinks
When: Monday
Where: The bar.
Rating: Low
Status: Complete
It could not be said that the twins were not, occasionally, an obnoxious sort. Upon hearing that their nearest and dearest friend had promised herself to another, the two of them had given each other a silent look and then shrugged. A decision had been made. Clearly, they were going to need to have congratulatory drinks about it.
Fred, they supposed, was a little closer to Tonks than George. If only because they hung out a bit more separately than George did. They'd bonded while Fred was in the hospital with the blue flu -- the more excitable twin had texted her nonstop during that time, since he'd had little else to do. George had stayed at home and worried until he was nearly sick, himself, but in a different way. It'd been a learning experience, and not one either was exceptionally proud of. But that was beyond the point, here.
The point was this: they needed to meddle. In an entirely innocent way, of course.
George quirked an eyebrow at his brother, and Fred could only nod in reply before pulling his phone out of his pocket to text Tonks.
>> Re: ENGAGEMENT.
>> Congratulatory drinks.
>> Tonight!
>> Bring your boy if you want!
Tonks had felt a little bad at letting the twins know of her engagement via text but she simply couldn’t contain her excitement long enough until she saw them. So when she got their text she happily agreed to drinks and that she’d ask Mac to come too. He needed to meet the boys after all, they were two of her best friends and possibly less intimidating than Sirius.
Later that night she got changed at her place, not having sorted the moving out process yet, and waited for Mac to pick her up before they headed to the bar the twins had picked out.
Mac smiled as he pulled up at her place. He hopped out of his truck and moved to knock at her door, eyes warm as he knocked and waited. He was dressed in red and black, red shirt, black jacket, and black jeans.
Tonks answered the door wearing a black lace skater dress with a red belt and red shoes, she laughed as she realised their outfits matched, “Looks like we’ve got some kind of psychic clothes link” she teased hugging him and placing a kiss on his lips before grabbing her purse and jacket.
Mac smirked and whistled. “Wow...” He smiled and kissed her softly, and then chuckled. “Ready to go?” He hmmed. “What should I expect?”
“Ready” she nodded as she shut the door and they made their way to his truck, “Madness probably, the twins are crazy but they’re a lot of fun. They both have a wicked sense of humor”
The twins were already at the bar. It was a bit of a nicer place -- nothing too special, but definitely not one of their generally preferred ratty corner holes of hell, either. There was a little dance floor and a proper DJ, and the lights were dimmed red, but it was a Monday night, so it wasn’t really like the place was loud or crazy busy. The twins were dressed in all black -- jeans and button up shirts -- it was their own little joke. Being mature was hard; neither could imagine properly dating let alone marriage, and so clearly it must be a bit like the death of a real life, right?
They were tittering between themselves with drinks in hand at a little back table -- conveniently with two more open spots at it - whilst they waited. “Oh, right,” Fred was saying, leaned in close to George.
“That was the day we decided red dye shouldn’t go anywhere near that,” George finished off.
When they entered the bar it didn’t take Tonks long to locate Fred and George, waving at them as they approached she tangled her fingers with Mac’s. “Oh, they’ll try and confuse you by swapping names too, just go with it. When they try hard they can even convince me I’m wrong” she grinned at Mac.
Mac smiled squeezing Tonk’s hand and nodded. “Okay.” He canted his head, studying the two, and smiling. They were interesting. “Hello, boys.” He spoke softly, but it was still a low rumble like thunder when he did so.
The two turned in unison at Tonks and Mac’s arrival -- their identical smiles were just that; identical. “Hello,” they both said in a sing-song sort of greeting. Tonks was not wrong when she said they did it on purpose. And it was funny so why shouldn’t they?
“Have a seat,” George said after a beat.
“Can we get you some drinks?” Fred asked. It was like rapid fire comments when they spoke.
Keeping hold of Mac’s hand Tonks gave them each a one armed hug, rolling her eyes at them as she pulled back and they sat down. She nodded at Fred, “Please” she said, knowing he’d know what to get her and letting Mac tell Fred what he wanted.
Mac sat, and grinned. “I’ll take a beer, please.” He was willing to let them get this round. And curious about these two. He watched them, eyes bright, studying.
Fred only nodded and wandered off toward the bar with a little pep to his step. George stayed behind, and probably Tonks and Mac should have considered themselves luck for that, since he was the more well behaved of the twins. Sort of.
He threaded his fingers and rested his chin on them lazily while he not at all subtly appraised Tonks’ new fiance. “So,” he said to the two, pleasantly attempting to prompt conversation.
Tonks did consider herself lucky, Fred was far more likely to misbehave than George even though they both thought the same way. Fred always took a few more liberties when it came to her, mostly because they got on so well she let him get away with it.
“How have you been George?” she asked him breaking into a conversation relatively easily, “Not working too hard at the shop I hope”
Mac grinned and clapped George on the shoulder. “So. What is your shop like?”
George blinked a little over the clap on the shoulder, but then grinned -- easy. “Brilliant,” he said to Tonks. “Also brilliant,” he said to Mac -- because, well, that worked, right? No?
“It’s fun,” he went on, glancing over Tonks and Mac to see how far along his brother was in the drink getting process. “You should visit sometime. Give us some money.”
Tonks smirked, “It’s a joke shop, I’ll take you there” she told Mac, “You wouldn’t believe the stuff they have”
Mac nodded, smirking. He recalled some of the practical jokes he had been part of as a kid. This might be more fun than he had thought. “I’d be glad to see it and consider some of your products.” He smirked wider. “You should come to the farmer’s market and get some fresh fruit.”
“Seems like a fair trade,” that came from Fred, who’d returned with a new set of drinks for all. He set them on the table before sliding himself back into his seat next to his twin. The two, together were always better than one, and with their combined efforts, their grins were Cheshire. “So,” started Fred, fiddling with his beer bottle.
“Marriage,” finished off George, doing quite the same.
Tonks smiled brightly at the both of them as she nodded, “Yep, marriage” she said holding out her left hand to show off her engagement ring, the fingers of her other hand squeezing Macs where their fingers were linked together.
“Eeyup. Seemed like the thing to do. I love her, and she me, and I want her in my life, always.” Nothing else seemed important as that, to Mac, so he nodded and sipped his beer, squeezing Tonks’ hand gently.
The twins both blinked, expressions going oddly blank. “That was--” started one.
“--heartfelt,” finished off the other. And then they shared a secret Twin Glance and tittered a little between themselves. Oh, adults. So serious. So weird.
Tonks laughed at them, “Oh boys, you just wait” she told them with a grin, laying her head on Macs shoulder, “You’ll both fall in love one day and know exactly what we mean”
Mac hugged her close and chuckled. “I reckon I didn’t think it would happen either. But it did, and it’ll happen to you boys. You seem nice enough. You’ll wake up one day with serious girlfriends.”
The twins shared an eyeroll, and snorted both at the same time -- it wasn’t rehearsed, and seemed to be as natural as any. “No,” Fred said.
“Probably not,” agreed George. Neither seemed bothered about that fact. “But we are pleased for you.”
“So drink up,” Fred went on, lifting his beer in salute. “Because you’re gonna need a cab home t’night!”
Tonks smiled, it was going to be so satisfying when they did eventually fall in love and she’d be sure to remind them of this evening. “Thank you” she said picking up her own drink, “Well we did come out to celebrate with you” she added laughing.
Mac lifted his drink in salute. “Slonshall!” and he downed it. He had a bit of an iron stomach and he was looking forward to this evening.
Tonks had a good long while to wait if she really thought they’d each separately fall in love and run off and get married. The twins were a joint package, and they doubted highly there were many people who would appreciate that in a romantic sense. So they’d just be alone together and that was fine, too.
“Slonshall?” George repeated, perplexed.
She knew they were a joint deal but she had faith that there was somebody out there who would be fine with that. Although on the up side at least neither of them would ever be alone, they would always have each other.
Tonks frowned, “No idea” she said to George before looking at Mac inquisitively, she couldn’t recall him ever using that phrase before.
Mac chuckled. “It’s an old Celtic drinking blessing. It means to your health.” He kissed Tonk’s hair softly. He had not been in a drinking situation out in public with her before. It seemed even for them, they had something new to learn. And that was awesome.
“Interesting,” said the two twins at once. And then they drank, because that was how it worked. Apparently.
George pointedly ignored Tonks’ and Mac’s PDA actions, whereas Fred seemed to focus on them -- eyes bright, oddly curious. “So?” He asked, resting his chin on his hand and leaned forward. “When’s the wedding?”
Tonks also thought it was awesome and nice to know that they were still learning things about each other. “We haven’t set a date yet” she told him, “We’ve got Mac’s sisters wedding in May first”
“Maybe this Summer, but if not, early fall might be fun.” He grinned at her. “We could have it in October, if we figure it out by then.” He nodded, but shrugged. “But we’ll find our own way.” He smiled at the twins.
“Aw.” said the twins.
“That’s just ---”
“Adorable.” Did it really matter who said what? They lifted their drinks again, amused.
