John was prone to taking flights these days, though when he was visible to the ground, he took the precaution of going invisible. Then coming visible again as he soared higher and faster. He enjoyed the feeling of freedom it allowed him and the sense of sheer lack of weight he felt when the world fell away. It was intoxicating and wonderful.
He loved his life these days, and would not trade it for anything, but he did enjoy these moments when he soared high above the world, mostly alone. Lately, there had been more Dreamers coming awake, though, and he had seen, from a distance, a few other fliers.
Air rushed over Carol’s body. It should chill her to the bone, but she never noticed it. She gleamed like a sun was glowing within her, and the faster she went the warmer she got. She broke the sound barrier and kept going faster, pushing herself and her speed, to see just how fast she could go.
John spotted her and grinned, and then, looking like his full alien self, shot toward her. Green skinned, alien faced, and with a red x-straps across his chest, with what appeared to be blue speedos and blue boots that matched his blue cape, he shot toward her and along her path.
Hello, Dreamer. His voice came calling, softly, at the edge of her mind.
I thought my costumes were ridiculous, she thought back, giving him a mental picture of her classic costume and her original costume. She gave him a smile as she turned in the air to face him.
He smiled to her. Such costumes I think are designed by us when we have little idea of what is practical. He chuckled openly and in her mind. It is good to see another flier in the air. The skies have been lonely save for a few small fliers. I am known as J’onn.
Or need for what’s practical. Carol chuckled out loud. I’m....call me Marvel. It suited her and ‘Captain Marvel’ just sounded so weird.
John chuckled, then bowed to her. They called me the Martian Manhunter back home. It is as good a sobriquet as any.
I’ve met some aliens, in my dreams. No one from Mars. Most of them are from farther out. Kree, Skrulls, Shi’ar. This should be weirder than it felt.
John suddenly placed her. Ah, you are from that universe, the universe of the Avengers! That omniverse spanning adventure had been a weird one.
One universe, anyway. The Avengers seem to be in multiple universes. She smiled, spinning around in the air. My Iron Man isn’t the same one as the one here.
No... this one seems more... grounded than the one I met. His mental chuckle was rueful. In my world, we have the Justice League, instead of the Avengers.
Both names sound kind of stupid, but at least yours are real words. She laughed again. The conversation was amusing to her, and she sensed nothing to fear from J'onn.
John chuckled and he looped her, spinning slowly himself. I think they are both silly myself. The worlds need superheroes, but they also need people with better naming skills. He laughed
I think I’ll stick with Marvel. It was my call-sign in the Air Force, and if it’s good enough for Uncle Sam, it’s good enough for me.
John nodded. In this world, my siblings were all military. I chose the path of the police until recently. He smiled to her. What do you do these days?
I fly. And I teach others to fly. Occasional I sub in for stunt flying but that’s because I have a contact in the industry. Silly Thor, such a good man. It’s what I love to do.
John smiled. Good. You are a good person. You deserve happiness. He soared, loving how the wind felt.
Carol’s hair whipped around her face as she soared up with him. She did another barrel roll, feeling as though the world below was open and free.
John just chuckled. Have you ever been to Beijing? There is a nice little Chinese Food place there.
Last one there is paying, Carol said, her voice a sweet whisper in John’s mind, before she darted forward, air shattering around her as she broke through the sound barrier again.
John laughed, then shot after her, letting the air boom around him, before he smirked and then increased speed. He rarely cut loose. As he did so, he shot forward even faster, body becoming a blur as he phased and used superspeed at the same time.
The woman moved like a sunburst, whooping and laughing the faster they went and the harder she pushed herself. Never underestimate either an ally or an opponent, and she wouldn’t let her do so to the Martian.
John smiled as he watched her, enjoying the play of it, and increasing speed steadily. He was faster than the Flash, faster than Superman, and he had no idea how fast this woman was, but he didn’t care if he won or lost, simply enjoying the game of it. The fun of it. He saluted her while they flew.
She thought he was faster than her, but she’d never truly pushed her limit. She got better each time she tried. She had ground to orbit under 1m40s now. She knew she could push herself harder, so she did.
He smiled not trying to outrace her, but to keep up with her. At the pace they were going, Beijing was not far away and he reached out to her mind. We’re almost there. I concede, for I think we have not the space and time to truly test out speeds.
I’ll take a raincheck Carol replied, slowing down and coming to a hover. It was raining, and she let the water wash over her, before it started to steam as she let her heat dry her.
He grinned as he watched her. If he was not taken, he would definitely admire that more. Thank you for the fly. It has been interesting. Shall we get the Chinese? Food?
Lets. Carol gave him a wink then dropped out of the sky like a rock. Best Chinese run ever.
FIN.
