Rating/Warnings: Low - Talks about feelings and wanting/not wanting to be together.

Loki had, more or less, just been teasing. Testing the waters, as they say. Somehow it turned a bit serious and while he was glad they were finally going to talk about it, he felt ... Nervous. It was an odd sensation for him.
So he picked a public spot for their talk in hopes of alleviating some of the awkwardness. The bistro was small but nice, had great soups and salads for an easy supper. A nice relaxed atmosphere. It was the beat set up he could manage.
Waiting for Darcy at the table, Loki anxiously tapped his fingers on the menu and sipped at a drink.
Darcy was all well and fine with the teasing until it had turned on its head. Perhaps she was thinking about her talk with Thor. Talking about it was seeming to help though, even if she didn’t really know what to say. She was nervous about it too, but probably not for the same reason.
Having decided to meet with him before the movie, she finally arrived at the bistro just slightly late and finally sat down in the seat across from him. “Hi.. sorry I’m late. There was a giant dickbag in the parking lot.”
Loki gave her a wave, and then laughed. “Did you give him a piece of your mind? I’m sorry I missed it.” He sat up properly in his chair, reminding himself that this was just a casual talk between friends.
“How are you?”
“Oh yeah I gave him the one finger salute and a lot of choice words,” she told him with a bright smile. If someone deserved it, then they got the full end of her colorful personality. She picked up the menu but didn’t actually open it yet.
“I’m okay, how are you?”
“I’m good,” he said, shrugging. “Though clearly I’m the least exciting of the two of us.” Loki laughed a bit. “I’m, uh, sorry if my texts got ahead of themselves.”
“I’m only exciting because some guy was a jerk. Totally not that exciting,” she countered. Well she supposed that it had to come up sometime. Darcy took a sip her of water and shook her head. “It’s okay, I just.. texting isn’t the best way to do this, y’know?”
Though talking was a pain in the ass. It meant admitting things. “So was that whole my friend likes you thing actually you or what?”
“I was attempting, poorly, apparently, to be coy,” he argued in his defense. But it sounded so stupid that he couldn’t help the way his lips quirked up in amusement. “In all honesty, I didn’t expect it to get out of hand. Really.”
Loki took a drink of his iced tea and thought on the advice his brother gave him. Just be honest. The thought of being honest pained Loki a bit.
“Yes. It was actually me.”
Oh dear. If he couldn’t be truthful with her, then what kind of relationship were they going to have? If they had one at all. Still she knew Loki and her dream version of him, so it made a bit of sense.
“Okay..I ..” What was she supposed to say? Something stupid about there being more fish in the sea? “I like you.. I like you a lot. But I’m not good at relationships. You’re better off with someone else.”
“I’m not ... Really certain I understand the issue here,” he said. He said it cautiously, trying to work around it. He knew she would say that, and he knew that both he and Darcy were incredibly stubborn. Eventually something would have to give, right?
“I like you. You like me. We get along fantastically together. How am I better off elsewhere?”
How to explain it? “We get along fantastically. As friends. We’re good friends. Changing that comes with a lot of risk, y’know?” They were all cliche excuses that she was using, but it was the truth. “And if you’re anything like your brother, your dreams.. when you have them.. are going to change you. And I’m still going to be me. Stupid, boring, human me. I can’t do anything. And you can say that it won’t change things, but it does. Over and over again. It happened last time..”
Loki frowned. He cocked his head a little to the side.
“Dreams? What dreams?” Thor’s never mentioned anything about dreams, but Loki knows that his brother’s been tip-toeing around something since he came back. “I think you’re being absurd, you know. I know it will change things. Change is good. I think we can be very good together.”
Darcy blinked and looked quite confused. “Wait, Thor hasn’t said anything to you? Not a word? Are you serious?” God damn him. Oh she was going to kill Thor, she really was. “Have you ever had a dream that feels.. real? Completely real, like you’ve lived them?” Maybe Loki hadn’t had one yet, but that only made things more difficult.
“I know how absurd I’m being. I just don’t want to get heart broken again. I got dumped and ignored and I don’t think you’re going to do that but I’m just trying not to get hurt again.”
He let out a sigh, because, honestly, what could do? Pushing the subject, while being the advice he was given, was likely going to end with them parting ways and not speaking for a bit. He admittedly liked Darcy too much for that.
“I understand. I wish I could make you think otherwise, but it’s not up to me to decide for you.” He put on a smile, reaching across the table to assure Darcy of no hard feelings. “And I’m very, very glad we’re friends. But that still doesn’t mean I’m going to let you date other men.” A grin.
It was probably best that he was ignoring all of the words about dreams. It was hard enough to explain. She didn’t want to argue with him, or not speak to him at all. “I don’t want to date other men, so you’re fine there. What if we try this and we end up hating each other and that’s that? We don’t ever talk again. I don’t want it to be the end. And I’m just worried that you’re going to end up hating me..”
“Darcy, I don’t think there’s a thing in the world that could make me hate you. How about this?” He paused their conversation to order, then waited until their waitress was gone.
“How about, we go to the movie tonight, as planned, as friends who will likely imitate several dinosaur noises and behave unlike the adults we are. And we’ll think about this - the you and me thing - and won’t rush into any decision neither of us seem to be prepared for.”
“Yeah you say that..” she trailed off and shook her head a little. Right anything else would be good then thinking about this. “I like that idea. At least going to movies and acting like dinosaurs. I just.. I want to, I really really want to. I’m just scared. I’m sorry. I don’t want you to be with anyone else.”
“I don’t want you to be scared. If that’s how you feel, right now, then it’s good to wait. It’s no way to start anything.” He ducked his head with a slight laugh. “I think I can wait. I can be patient, sometimes, you know.”
“You can? I’ll believe it when I see it,” she teased lightly. “Thanks though. We’ll see how it goes. So food and then movie?”
“Well. I’ll try, at any rate.” He gave her an amused look and then nodded. “Food, then movie. I promise I’ll keep my hands to myself.”
