Billy at age sixteen, almost seventeen, had a lot of learning to do. After his summer trip to Japan, he had rededicated himself to working as a volunteer. And the Urdnot ranch, with it’s focus on helping kids, really seemed like a good one to do. After spending almost six months there, he felt like he had made a good choice. And so this weekend, he was still working there.
He worked another job, an actual work most nights, but he tried to be at the ranch almost every weekend, and loved that he could help out, in any way, in every way.
Today, he was working on paperwork. with his travels and his family’s contact with different countries, Billy had one very unusual skill. He could speak, read, and write about eight languages already, and knew a lot about how paperwork could be best processed, fastest, without losing effect for what needed to be done.
It made it so he was able to work paperwork fast, and do it quietly without muss of fuss.
Wrex rarely turned down help, especially from a kid trying to help his peers out. He watched out, a little bit, knowing some of the other kids would likely pick on him, but he’d developed a tight ship, and most of the kids had done well and become much better people already.
Billy was just glad to help, and he waved as he saw the big man himself. “Hello, Mister wrex, sir!” He was always taught to be polite.
“Morning, kid.” Wrex gave him his awkwardly tight smile as he walked out of his office. “How’re things going?”
“Great! Paperwork’s coming along smoothly, mail’s ready to go out when the truck gets here, and oh! I had a question. I talked to a lady who’s on the library board for Orange County and she was interested in finding out if you wanted a branch of the library here.” he waved a hand around the area.
Wrex furrowed his brow. “What’s the catch?” He was generally a man of few words and great suspicions, at least when it came to protecting his kids.
Billy gaped. “There’s no catch. Though I imagine it would have to be run by library rules. I don’t... I mean... I don’t know? I just thought it would be great if kids would have access to the books, but... I just wanted to tell you about her offer.” he swallowed and looked down, uncertain now.
“It’s okay.” He ruffled Billy’s too neat hair. “I’ll give her a call and we’ll see what we can do. They like to worry about public image and things like that, I want to know how they feel about one of the staff members being a married lesbian.”
Billy smiled and slumped more relaxedly, before straightening up. “Thank you sir. I didn’t tell her anything about the place, she already know you know, the name and all.” He didn’t want Wrex thinking he was going around blabbing about it.
He nodded. “Makes sense. I hope it won’t be a problem. She seemed nice.”
“I’m sure it’ll be fine. Don’t sweat it, and thanks. We could use good publicity, so you did good, kid.” He ruffled that hair again, because it was ruffleable.
Billy sighed and then grinned. “Thanks.” He nodded. “This place is so awesome. I wish I had more of me to do more here around school and work.”
“Bet you can get some extra credit helping out with things. You could help Alma in the science building, once she’s back to teaching.”
Billy blinked. “I could? Really? Cool! That’d be fantastic!”
“I don’t see why not. She’ll need an assistant, with the baby and with Beth working on her medical learnings.” Wrex smiled at Billy.
Billy nodded. “I’d be glad to help!” Billy smiled wider. “I like this place. It feels comfortable.”
“That’s what we try to do. A lot of these kids had nowhere else to go that wasn’t jail...” He’d done a lot of bad things in his days as a mercenary. This was his way to use his blood money to pay it forward.
Billy nodded. “I’ve seen it, and you do a whole lot of good. Being part of this is what makes it easier to walk around the crazy world as it is.” He nodded. Being able to help people and know others were doing the same? helped a lot.
“Think things will only get crazier. I’m proud of the people here and I’m proud of how everyone came out to help when the meteor destroyed everything.” There was an upside to that, it allowed them to build the hidden underground areas.
“Man, that was a crazy time.” He had been around back then, but not a volunteer. He had come in the wake of that, though.
“Thank you for giving me this chance.”
“You’re welcome.” Wrex gestured to Jenny, who brought over some more paperwork. “Here’s the science crap. I don’t understand any of it but you should look over it.”
“Will do, sir.” Billy smiled as he took the papers and got to work. “This place handles a lot of paperwork. I like coming here. There’s always something new to do.”
“I hate paperwork almost as much as I hate computers,” Wrex grumbled, mostly to himself. He was going to have to start paying the kid at this rate.
Billy chuckled. “Most annoying thing about life, really. No matter what we despise, we’ll have to deal with it anyway, sooner or later. But don’t you worry, sir. I’ll get this all shaped up.” It wasn’t so much work, really. Not to Billy’s mind. He was reading some of the papers and sorting them, his hands swift and efficient.
“I’ll let you get back to work. Take a break later and join the kids for Cricket, okay? Dr. Hussain is doing a game after lunch.” He smiled at Billy. He still didn’t understand how the game worked, but Faiza was all gung ho about it.
“Will do!” Billy fired off a salute and grinned. “Try not to work too hard, sir.” His grin showed his respect, and his doubt about the man actually taking it easy.
"Me? Never." Grinning, Wrex headed into his office. Billy was a good kid. He should do something for him.
Billy got back to work, smiling and the day went by. This was how it was supposed to be.
FIN.
