I’m sure you’ll have babies by then.
Who: Zelda and Navi
When: Friday morning, April 5
Where: Navi’s Nursery
What: A visit to the shop
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete!
Zelda had decided that she wanted to put a little garden in the front of her house. The whole thing was fenced in, with a little drive way and a gate, so she could have the garden on the inside. She was hoping for some beautiful flowering plants, and some fruits and vegetables. How cool would it be to grow her own food? And to have bees? She thought bees were awesome. Maybe she could have some of those, too! She’d need ‘em for the fruits and veggies, anyway.
She headed to Navi’s nursery, because the other had told her that she could help with the design of the garden and the plants. Zelda was really looking forward to getting her hands dirty, so to speak. She came in through the front of the shop and looked around for her enthusiastic friend.
The enthusiastic friend was dancing as she watered some mint plants, humming to herself. The baby was feeling good, Navi was feeling good, and so was Pete. Life was just awesome, and Zelda was coming over too!
Zelda wandered in and joined in on the dance, feeling good. Her life was good, too! She was going to visit the set of the movie she was starring in! That was exciting! And a new friend was coming over in the afternoon to help her garden, AND she had a date planned with Link. All good things! “Hiii!” She said, beaming at her friend Navi.
“Hey, you! Want to see the plans I have drawn up for your garden?” She’d called earlier to get information on the space itself, so she’d drawn up a rough sketch of what her idea was.
Zelda laughed. “Yes! I absolutely do!” She reached over to hug her friend, then nodded. “Fruits, vegetables and flowers. I want it all!” Zelda was the type of girl to go all in whenever she found something new to try. Hence the gardening thing. And the acting thing. Go big or go home.
“Okay!” Navi moved to her office to find the sketches she’d drawn. One of them was actually very much what Zelda had wanted, just with a Navi twist: everything was local, and everything would do well with minimal fussing over it.
Zelda followed Navi to the office and waited for Navi to bring the sketches around. She leaned against the doorway and grinned at her friend. “You’re amazing. Thank you so much for doing so much to help me! I’m really excited to get this garden started. I want to buy all of my new plants here today. Think we can do that?”
“Oh, totally, I set a lot of them aside for you already.” Navi was nothing if not prepared.
“Awesome!” Zelda said, bursting with excitement. She accepted the design and studied it for a moment. “This is exactly what I was looking for.” She said, nodding as she ran her eyes over the design. “I mean, I really didn’t have any of this in mind, but... well, I’m not sure what I mean!” She laughed. “Okay, show me plants. And I’ll need fertilizer and soil and some tools...”
“Yup, I set all that aside for you!” Navi bounced over to an area she’d cleared off for Zelda’s purchases. There were tools and soil bags and tubs of organic fertilizer, and seedlings. Zelda was all set.
“Gosh, you’re amazing!” Zelda said, turning to look at all the stuff that was there for her. She moved to the plants to look at them all, and the bags of soil, inspecting as she went. She couldn’t believe this was all going to be hers, growing in her own garden.
“Oh, it’s not that bad. The stuff was already here, sillybilly.” Navi grinned, bumping Zelda’s hip lightly.
Zelda gave a laugh at the bump, going a little pink. “Well, that’s right. But still. You’re so great to help me! I really appreciate it.” She threw an arm around Navi and hugged her in for a moment. “How much do I owe you for the stuff? Do you have someone who can help me load it up?” She’d brought her brother’s pick-up truck today. He had a collection of cars, she only had the one. And it wasn’t nearly big enough for all this stuff!
“I can help, I have a truck for deliveries.” Navi hugged her friend back, hoping that things wouldn’t get awkward when Zelda started dreaming.
"Ooh, that would be good! You can come help show me where everything should go in the garden, too. I'm going to start working on it this afternoon." Zelda was so excited.
“Okay!” Navi moved to roll the dollies toward the truck she used for deliveries. She was pregnant, and she was showing a bit, but she wasn’t an invalid.
Zelda moved with her, but wouldn’t let her lift anything. Surely Navi had employees or something who could help her with all this? Anyway, they managed to get all of the items into both Zelda’s truck and the business pick-up, and Zelda turned to follow Navi back inside to finish up paying for the things. “You have no idea how excited I am about all of this!” So many good things seemed to be happening in her life all at once!
“Me too!” Navi bounced a little, scrunching up her face to keep her wings from coming out, to keep her from floating off of the ground. “I can follow you up to your place.”
“Okay!” Zelda said with a grin. She was so excited, so thrilled about all of this! She turned to lead the way back out to the cars. Watching tiny Zelda climb up into her brother’s huge pick-up must have been a funny sight. “It’s not too far or complicated, but I’ll make sure you don’t get lost!”
Navi climbed up into her own pickup, but she was much more practiced at it, bump or no. Humming as she drove along behind Zelda, she thought about how all of the plants she was giving her would be going to a good new home. It made her heart swell.
Zelda led the way, watching in the rear view mirror to make sure that Navi didn’t get lost along the way. Her home was a ways away, but it wasn’t a terribly complicated route to get there. Zelda punched the code into the box by the gate, which swung open and let them in. There were gardeners there, working in the yard. When Zelda showed them the pick up trucks full of stuff, they started to unload while Zelda moved back over to give Navi another hug in thanks.
“Come, I’ll show you where everything’s going.” Zelda said, and grabbed the plan and Navi’s hand to drag her into the front yard. She was bouncing with excitement.
Giggling, Navi ran along with the other woman, waving to the gardeners. She was planning on helping too. “Okay, so here’s the plan,” she grinned, pointing at the paper Zelda held. A few of the gardeners commented on how easy everything would be on watering and maintenance - Navi had planned out some natural pest prevention as well.
Zelda was positively glowing. She was so glad she’d found a friend who was so good at this stuff! Navi was wonderful, and Zelda was thrilled. They could get a few things done--at least put the plants in the right positions--and then Zelda could come back after lunch and get to work herself. The Gardeners probably wouldn’t stay that long. They set about picking up the bags of soil and fertilizer and all the plants and seedlings, and positioning them around the yard--the earth was freshly tilled in preparation.
“It’s looking so amazing already,” Zelda said. “...and I can’t wait for the plants to start producing fruit and vegetables. Oooh, and beautiful flowers!” Her heart gave a little leap when she thought about Link coming over and seeing it. Possibly. At some point. In the future. Maybe.
Navi nodded as she picked up a shovel and started to get to work with the gardeners. “You’ll have all those things! You get to watch everything stretch up to the sun, too.” She sounded fond, like a mother describing her child’s first words.
“So, you know my best friend, did you know that?”
“I’m really looking forward to it. Communing with nature.” She reached over and took the shovel out of Navi’s hands. “No. Not on your life. I won’t have my pregnant girl friend breaking her back on my garden. I’ll do more work later, you can come by over the weekend and check up on me. For now, lemonade and watching the sexy gardeners working.” ...obviously one of her favorite pastimes.
She set the shovel aside. “I do?”
Navi blinked. “Oh, okay. I wasn’t going to break my back.” She laughed and sat down anyway. “Are they sexy? Dunno, I prefer pete.” Navi toed off her flip flops and wiggled her toes. “You do! You know Liiiiink.”
Zelda settled down into the chair next to Navi’s. “I know, I just don’t want you doing anything unnecessary...” And then Link’s name came up and Zelda’s cheeks went rather pink. “Right. I do. I know Link.” She cleared her throat, and was grinning. Why was she grinning?
Navi pointed. “I KNEW IT YOU TOTALLY LIKE HIM.”
Zelda laughed and shook her head. “What? Shut up. What? Do not!” Oh, she totally did. She’d been on a coffee date with him, and they were planning an outing to Disneyland. Zelda was very much looking forward to it, if the blush on her cheeks was any indication.
“You do! Honestly, I don’t blame you, he’s gorgeous, but that’s weird of me to say, I’m like his big sister or his auntie.” Navi wrinkled her nose and then giggled. “He likes you too.”
“He does? Really?” It was strange that Navi knew Link. Zelda was starting to wonder if everyone on Valarnet was connected somehow. Her cheeks were even more pink at the idea that Link liked her, too. “I mean... we’re going to Disneyland next week. Thursday. It’s my day off.”
“That’s really sweet,” Navi grinned brightly. “And of course he does! You’re sweet and funny and gorgeous.” Navi was getting into the laying in the sun, and she stretched out a bit, wiggling on the grass. “Disneyland is kind of romantic, you know. Pete and I went. We made out on the teacups.”
Zelda blushed. She didn’t think there would be any making out on the teacups on her Disneyland adventure with Link. ...maybe. Probably not. That was far too public for someone like Zelda. Too many pictures would undoubtedly be taken. No, she’d have to settle for something a little more private if she was going to lock lips with Link. Like... The Haunted Mansion.
“How is Pete? Excited about the baby?” She asked, trying to shake the semi-naughty thoughts running through her head about the rides at Disneyland.
“Very much. He’s helping me paint the nursery and build the crib and pick out linens and stuff. He’s adorable that way. He likes to pretend he’s nonplussed, but I know he’s fibbing.” Navi giggled to herself. “I love him. It’s weird, but I didn’t believe in soul mates ‘till I found mine.”
Zelda couldn’t hold back an “Awwwwww!” that escaped her. It was just too cute. She wasn’t sure she believed in soul mates, either. Then again, maybe she hadn’t found hers yet. “You two are really wonderful!” She hadn’t even MET Pete yet, and she loved him already! ...in a platonic way, of course.
Navi lifted up her shirt, exposing a doodle that Pete had done in Sharpie on her bump of a grapefruit. “There’s this website that says how big the baby is in terms of fruit. He keeps calling her his little salad.”
“Fruit?” Zelda asked, crinkling her nose up. “That just seems... a bit weird. Like, why would they compare a baby to fruit? I don’t want to eat a baby. Definitely not. It’d make me think differently about walking through the produce section at the supermarket, too.” Not that she did that that often. She had people to shop for her.
“I guess it’s so you can get an idea of size? Dunno.” Navi shrugged. “They could’ve used objects I don’t want to eat just as well.”
"Yeah, like. .. ping pong ball versus baseball, or something." Zelda shrugged. She wasn't planning on having kids any time soon, though she was excited to get to hold Navi's when it was born. "But still, it's cute he's so excited!"
“Oh, he wants eleven more, he’s beyond excited.” Navi laughed, rubbing her bump. “I keep telling him to slow down and just enjoy the process of the first one.”
Zelda's face fell just a little. She believed it. "Eleven more? Really?"
“Oh, I’m sure he’ll realize around number three that eleven is totally unreasonable. If he doesn’t, I’ll just smack him one.” Navi made a fist and shook it.
Three even seemed like a lot to Zelda. But three was much more manageable than twelve. She gave a laugh. "I bet you have him wrapped around your little finger!"
“Nah, it’s more of an equal wrapping thing. Kind of like cat’s cradle, I think.” Navi grinned, remembering the game with string she’d made her grandfather play with her. He’d always asked her what the point was. She’d never had a good answer.
Zelda gave a grin and happy sigh. "That's so sweet, " she said, wistfully. "I'm so happy you're so happy!" She hoped some day she would find something like that.
“Someday you’ll have someone like that, I hope. You deserve the best.” Navi wanted to tell her everything, she really did, but she couldn’t yet. But maybe she could try? “Being pregnant gives me heartburn and funky dreams.” Not a lie. “I sleep all crummy.” Neither was that. Mission accomplished.
"Oh yeah?" Zelda asked with interest. "Dreams all have special meanings, you know. Even pregnant ones, I think. What did you dream about?"
“Eh, this old timey forest world. It’s kind of pretty and fun, actually.” And that was as far as Navi would be going at that moment.
"Huh. That's interesting. Forests and nature are especially powerful signs in dreams." Zelda said, as If she had done dream interpretation study in the past.
“You sound like you studied this!” Navi grinned, enjoying the sun on her belly.
“I have!” Zelda said, breaking into a huge grin. “A lot of it is really common sense type stuff. So, for instance, if you’re travelling through the forest, you’re moving from one place to another, right? So it’s some sort of transition. Not a big leap, considering your current condition. And it’s old timey? Like Robin Hood? Means you’re focused on the less fortunate, or those who need help. Again, could be all about the baby. Or, is it more like, renaissance? That would indicate ... maybe non-conformity? Trying new things, and explosions of creativity.”
“Different place entirely, really. Making new things, probably.” Navi knew what it was, but she didn’t want to say.
“That sounds like it makes sense. My dreams are all ‘ahh, I’m in class and have no pants!’ or ‘It’s my birthday and no one brought me any presents, but that’s okay because I can fly’ sort of things. Really boring and nonsensical. But it’s fun to look at them and see if there’s any hidden meanings.”
“I don’t usually remember the boring ones,” Navi grinned. “Which is all well and good, if they’re boring, there’s no point remembering them, right?”
“Right! If they’re really boring. Even my boring ones... when I wake up? I can usually figure out something I was supposed to learn from them. Or something that I could take and think about.” Zelda was absolutely a ‘glass half full’ girl. “Can I get you some water, or something?”
“Only if you want some!” Navi was pretty easy, and she stretched a little before standing up.
“Think I might have a lemonade, actually.” Zelda said, climbing to her feet. She moved to lead Navi into the house, but one of the gardeners stopped her. They’d put all the plants out where they were supposed to be, and were planning on coming back over the weekend to do more work.
Zelda thanked them all and waved them off, then turned to lead Navi into the house, for reals this time.
The house was gorgeous, and Navi smiled. “Holy ... wow, you live here?”
It was huge. Five bedrooms, most of which Zelda didn’t need! Five thousand square feet. It was beautiful. Zelda loved her home, even if sometimes it felt a little empty. “Yeah, this is my place. I’ve been here almost a year now.” Before that she was still living with her father and brother.
“Come on in,” she said, leading the way into the kitchen.
“Is it just you?” Navi followed her to the kitchen, looking around in awe. She’d thought that her house was big!
“Yeah, it’s just me.” Zelda said. She moved to the fridge and opened the door, then tugged out a couple of bottled lemonade and held one out for Navi. “It’s a bit overkill, sure. This is an investment house. Hopefully it’ll be worth more in half a decade, and I’ll move into something else.” Maybe by then she’d be moving in with someone. Or starting a family. Or something else.
“That’s smart. And I’m sure you’ll have babies by then.” Navi waggled her eyebrows and took one of the bottles. “I live in the house I grew up in. Plenty of room there.”
Zelda laughed, going rather pink. “I dunno. I’d have to find a man first. Get married. All of that. I think I’ve got too much living to do in the next few years to go man hunting.” Unless it was Link. Her cheeks went an even deeper color at that thought.
“You will.” Navi squeezed her hand, noticing that blush, and knowing what it meant. “Promise.”
