Billy hurried into the farmer’s market just as some places started to close up. It had been a long day and he wanted nothing more than to curl up in bed, but he needed to buy some fruit for the family, and so he hurried out to the market, arriving just before closing. He hurried around, buying some fruits and vegetables, and then arrived at the Jackson Family Orchard cart, and smiled.
“Pardon me, miss, I need a half-bushel of apples, and some of the rest of the fruit you have too.” He nodded, cheerful and polite.
AJ was already starting to pack things up, but when a customer came by, smiling and asking politely for some fruit, she couldn’t say no. “Sure! That I can absolutely do.” She gave him a smile in return, then started to sort through what she’d been packing up. “What are you looking for?”
Billy pointed out what he wanted, politely. “Thank you, ma’am. I’ll take a half-bushel of apples, and some smaller containers of oranges, and cherries, please?” He smiled widely at her. “Have you been doing this long?”
“A while now, yeah. A few years in California, but I’ve been on Apple Orchards my whole life.” AJ said, collecting all of his things. “...that’s a lot of apples! Are you cookin’ with ‘em or eatin’ ‘em?”
“Both! I like apples as they are, and a few are for that, but a few are for apple pies. I’m making them for some disadvantaged kids out at Urdnot Ranch.” He nodded. He wasn’t a great cook, but apple pies he could do.
“That’s so kindly of ya!” AJ said, giving him a smile. “Well, I’ll give ya a philanthropist discount, how ‘bout that?” She wanted to do more good deeds with her time, but planning her wedding, working, and spending time with her family were taking up every hour of her day not filled with sleep or eating.
Billy blushed and smiled. “Thanks! I appreciate it!” He was just trying to do some good. He worked hard and this meant he could do just a little more. “It’ll mean a lot to the kids.” He smiled to her warmly. She could help people without having time, by helping others who were!
“Anythin’ for the kids, right?” AJ said, giving him a nod. “It’s the least I can do. I really do wish I could do more. With my weddin’ comin’ up and all the things I have to do for that, along with work and gettin’ ready ta move... my life’s so full.”
Billy nodded. “I’ve always had what I needed, but I want to help those who don’t. Help from people like you to do it is something that makes that a whole lot easier. I’m just a kid.” He smiled at her. “You doing this much is more than enough, ma’am.”
He nodded.
“And congrats on your wedding!”
AJ gave a laugh. “Thank you! It’s comin’ up quick. Gonna be beautiful, I think. Apple themed.” Because that part wasn’t obvious, or anything.
“Yeah?” He smiled. “Sounds like fun! If you need any extra ushers, let me know. I’ve been known to volunteer a time or two.” Or ten.
AJ laughed. “I’ll definitely keep that in mind. We’ve still got a lot of planning to do. I’m not even sure how big it’s going to be.”
Billy nodded and handed over his card, then accepted his fruit. “Makes sense. When is the wedding?” He paid and smiled at her.
“May 4th. So it’s... coming up. Gosh, less than a month away.” AJ said, now feeling excitement mixed with a little bit of panic over that idea.
Billy gently patted her shoulder. “It’ll be okay, ma’am.” He nodded.
AJ gave a little chuckle and a smile. “Thank you. Now, do you need some help getting these things to your car?” She asked, brightening a bit.
“Sure! I’d be obliged!” He smiled and loaded up, then waited for her. “Thanks.”
AJ nodded, picking up the extra and weighing down her arms a bit. “Where’d you park?” She said, motioning for the farm hand to cover the closing down of the booth until she returned.
He pointed one direction. and then headed out. A few minutes later, they’d found his little Datsun sedan, and he’d unlocked it. “Here we are!” he set his in and took the load from her arms too. Then he smiled at her. “Thanks a lot, Ma’am!”
“You’re so welcome, Sugar Cube.” AJ said, giving him a bright grin. “Anything else I can do for ya, y’all just come on over to the Apple Stand and give me a holler. Y’hear?” She gave him a little wave. “It was nice meetin’ ya!”
he waved goodbye and headed out.
FIN!
