Azula hadn’t gone back to the hotel. She’d driven around in the cab for awhile, then had herself dropped off near some ruins of an old fortress. Inside, she practiced firebending and lightning. Burning out her anger and her tears the only way she could, and safely away from anyone who might get hurt. She desperately wanted to hurt someone, and that urge scared her.
She felt like she’d been blinded by her feelings for Ty Lee. She felt betrayed by them. They’d led her astray, and made her think that she could have normal things, normal happiness.
It was, oddly, a consolation, small as it was, that Zuko’s proposal had gone better. He’d finally beaten her at something.
Ty Lee spent an hour wandering around in her dress before she figured out the solution to her problem. She texted Khamul furiously, and practiced what she would say to Azula to get her to run away from it all. She couldn’t give Azula a fancy life with all the things like she had now, but Ty Lee would work hard to make sure Azula had a good life.
When Khamul gave her a better option she took it, even though the price was one she’d rather not pay. It would be easier like this. She could handle what he wanted if it could fix things with Azula.
So she had to run back to the hotel and hope that Azula would speak to her. She wasn’t sure what she’d do if Azula rejected her. Probably cry, to start.
Azula would have run away with Ty Lee, if she'd asked. She wasn't so far gone (or perhaps she was so far gone in love...). She might have complained about it, and she might have still been hurt, but she might have listened. There were a lot of might haves.
She eventually came back to the hotel, walking into the room, sweaty, tired and cried out, and just wishing that she'd never hatched this scheme. It was better to be ignorant, she decided, than betrayed.
Ty Lee was waiting on the bed, the paper from the fax machine in hand. She looked up when Azula came in, and rose to her feet. “Hi.” Her voice was soft, but she met Azula’s eyes. “I fixed it.”
She looked at Ty Lee. “Fixed it? What?” She swallowed, before the anger returned. Her eyes were tired, and cold. “There’s nothing to fix.”
“Not anymore.” Ty Lee noted. “I made a deal with Khamul, and he keeps his promises. I’m out of it. Done. You’ll have a new bodyguard when you get home tomorrow.” She seemed very pleased about it.
“You made a deal? What kind of deal?” Azula’s lips quivered, and she looked at the paper in her lover’s hand. She wondered if she even wanted to know. She wondered why she wanted to cry again. Was that hope?
“I owe Khamul a favor. In exchange, I get my freedom. And this.” She handed the paper to Azula. “I still needed a guardian to approve it, this is the fastest way to be emancipated.”
“.....” She looked the paper over, then tossed it aside and wrapped her arms around Ty Lee. “Your freedom? You’re out of the family?” So that she could be in the family the other way? Azula buried her face in Ty Lee’s shoulder, any thought of being cold and distant gone.
Ty Lee hugged her tight. “Yeah. I’m done with it. I can be yours, now, and you can be mine.” She wasn’t going to worry about Khamul’s payment right now. All her attention belonged to Azula in this moment. “I’m sorry I didn’t do this sooner, I wasn’t- I didn’t think you would propose to me.”
"I wanted to surprise you," Azula said, voice muffled. "I wanted to..be romantic and not myself. I wanted to..I wanted to be..." God, she felt so weak, that it was making her more upset. Upset that Ty Lee could turn her into this gibbering idiot.
Ty Lee just hugged her tight. “It was so romantic. I’m sorry I ruined it for you.” She kissed Azula’s neck softly, and stroked her hair. “Do you still want to marry me?”
“I want nothing more,” Azula said, voice choked with relief. She couldn’t explain to Ty Lee just how much this had hurt her. It wasn’t even the embarrassment or humiliation. “You still want me?”
“Of course I do.” Ty Lee said, softly. “I want to give you everything that’s good and beautiful. You make me feel so happy, and I want to help you find some of the happiness for yourself.” She kissed Azula’s neck softly, stroking her hair tenderly.
Swallowing, Azula lifted her head, looking into Ty Lee’s eyes. “It hurt. I thought it was all over.”
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t know what to do or say. I hope you can forgive me, I never wanted to hurt you.” She hugged Azula tight, and hoped hard that Khamul would take care of Ozai before they got back.
“It’s too easy to forgive you,” Azula said. “As long as you’re not afraid of me.” There was a waver in her voice again. She was afraid of that. Ty Lee was the last person she didn’ want to fear her. “I shouldn’t have...humiliated myself like that.
“No, what you did was the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me.” She hugged Azula tight. “I’ll never forget it, even if it didn’t go according to plan.”
"You were right, though. You aren't my equal. You're better than me." Azula swept Ty Lee into a kiss, feeling like the world had crumbled beneath her.
The kiss was nice, Ty Lee kissed her back with passion and love. It was worth it. Whatever she had to do with Khamul, she would endure it with a smile. She broke the kiss softly. “I love you, Azula.”
"I love you too." She wanted to get married now. Right this second, but she'd have to wait.
Didnt matter. Was engaged.
Azula pushed Ty Lee to the bed. "And I will prove it to you."
Ty Lee giggled, kissing Azula eagerly. “I will prove my love in return.”
