Trigger: Hit and runs.
Bethany had gone for a walk. She wanted to explore her neighborhood, and some of the surrounding area. Get a feel for it. She stood at the crosswalk, waiting for her right of way, before stepping out into the street.
Something smashed into her, lifting her up into the air. The ground fell towards her. Her ears were ringing, and everything was fuzzy. Was that a siren?
Rahne's rig had been very close when she and her partner got a call about a hit and run. The arrived at the scene and got to work. The young woman on the pavement didn't seem too badly injured on the outside, but Rahne knew looks could be deceiving.
"Hello," she said clearly, but not without sympathy. "Can you tell me your name? And also where it hurts worst,"
"Ow..." Oh, that was intelligent, Bethy... She struggled a bit, trying to sit up, "Bethany...everywhere." That wasn't very useful, either. She laughed, which only made the hurt worse, "Ow..oh ow..here..." She gestured at the woman's side, to indicate where on herself it was hurting. Then at her face and head.
Rahne nodded. "Don't sit up--we don't know how bad this might actually be yet, lass. We'll get you loaded up and off to the hospital very soon."
"What? Hospital? Oh no no no no my sister will have a cow!" The more sensible side of Bethany convinced her to listen to the nice EMT, so she laid there. Why was she on the ground? "What happened..?"
"Ye got got hit by a car, Bethany. And the driver didnae stop." Rahne helped her part finish the initial on-site examination. "Since ye were hit by a car, your going to the hospital. Big sister--I'm guessing--will just have to get tae have her cow."
"I got hit by a cah?!" Bethany groaned, and closed her eyes. It was tempting to keep them closed, actually. It hurt less, "Can't convince you to just..drop me off at home? No?"
"Nope, can't do that," Rahne said as she helped her partner load Bethany onto a gurney. "Try not to worry about it--the person who hit you and didn't stop is goin' tae be in more trouble with your sister than you are, I reckon."
Bethany grinned wearily, "You have the most adorable accent..."
Rahne chuckled. "Och. Glad ye like it." It often helped distract patients from low level pain, or at least from worrying about it.
"Oh..! Hawke. Marian Hawke..that's my sister.." It felt like a good idea to give fair warning, "She'll probably...bust down the doors of the hospital.."
Rahne chuckled. "I'll tell 'em tae watch out for her, then."
"Oh good.. I don't suppose you could sing me something?" The accent really was addicting to listen to.
"What kind of things d'ye like?" Rahne asked as they loaded Bethany in to the rig. She joined Bethany inside while her partner when back to drive.
"Do you...know any old songs? That tell stories." Bethy's voice was a little distant, "I could really use a story right now."
"Most of the stories aren't happy, I'll warn you," she said.
"A story is a happy story," The Hawke sister replied. "As long as its been told." She felt like someone might have told her something like that, a long, long time ago.
Rahne chuckled. "Well, that's an interesting way to think of it. All right then. Here ye go then." Rahne took a deep breath and began to sing, "Yest'r e'en the queen ha four Marys, tae nicht she'll hae but three, there was Mary Seaton and Mary Beaton, Mary Carmichael and me..."
