Nikola Tesla was taking a tour of the facilities at Stark. He’d been here before, off and on, both on official business and for pleasure. It was a giant sandbox, and he liked to wander through so he could get ideas for his own projects. Today he was escorting a class of his brightest Physics students through. Some of them might become interns here one day. He wasn’t expecting to hit any snags on this little expedition. It was as simple as “follow the yellow line” and don’t stray from the path.
Nikola was curious, though, and started to peek his head around corners, looking at the machinery and the employees with interest.
Peter tapped at his keyboard, goggles worn on the top of his head as he went to work. There were several things going on in his personal lab all around him. There was some sort of chemical mix going on behind him, it was white with a weird foaminess to it. Yet the texture was almost gooey at best, and offered an odd smell; nothing horrible, a very synthetic smell if anything.
He himself was currently working on a new design of polymer, which could be used for crash helmets in motorcycles or even in the military. At the moment it looked very much like nothing more than just a flat piece of polymer. Yet it was flexible, but had a superior strength to any of the other material on the planet; yet, it was super absorbent and could take blunt force and spread it throughout the material. Or that’s what he was hoping for at least.
He had a larger piece sitting on a table to the opposing corner of his lab, which looked like it had been shot at a few times, and even had a few mallets and hammers laying next to it as well.
Nikola couldn’t resist the temptation. He was curious by nature, and something about the dreams had him wondering more and more about the science around him. He studied it in the dreams, too, not just in this world. And he was able to use his own... talents... to help him with his science there. Electricity and magnetism.
He stepped into the office and glanced at the gooey, white mixture. It was curious. He was curious. He leaned over a little to get a good look, and then turned to the man at the computer. “What’s this, then?”
“Huh?” He blinked and spun in his chair when he heard someone. No one bothered him here, not even his bosses unless it was absolutely vital. So he was surprised to hear it, and just looked at the man. Then back at the mixture, before shrugging, “It’s a uh, kind of super adhesive. Like glue, but one that can stretch, has a more solid texture to it. I’m attempting to turn it into a bio-cable. Uh, here,” he pulled the schematics up on his computer.
Then he blinked, before turning to face him, “Wait, should I be showing you this. You could be from a rival company--actually, I do think that I recognize you.”
“Of course you do,” Nikola said, waving that thought off as he moved further into the room to inspect the white substance. It should absolutely come to Peter in a moment. This was Nikola Tesla. Peter had likely studied his work when he was in college. Nikola had been working in the field for twenty years, creating things, building things, pattenting things. Working with electricity and magnets, and making millions in the process.
“A super adhesive, you say?” Nikola added, giving a little nod. “Bio-cable. The world could always use more of those. Stronger, more reliable, durable. It’s amazing the things they’re doing with strong substances these days. Steel cables just don’t cut it the way they used to.” He turned to look at the other man for a moment. “What additional applications did you have in mind?”
“Oh, uh, well I uhm....” He then blinked and his eyes went wide, “But you’re Nikola Tesla. Oh my god, I’m so sorry I didn’t recognize you sooner. I uh, I wrote a thesis about one of your experiments. I have one of your coils as a lamp in my room, it’ sa bit dangerous at times but it’s a tiny model. I built it myself.” He held his hand out and shook his hand quickly, laughing a bit at the fact he was here.
“I uh, oh well I have a lot of uhm... stuff, but I mean nothing you’d be interested in. I’m just a low level science nerd,” he shrugged before looking around, “I’m sure Mr. Stark doesn’t even know some of the stuff I’ve pushed out of his lab.”
He then twisted around, before looking at his computer, “But uh, yea bio cables are around, but not like this. Mine is like a synthetic webbing, I’ve calculated a spider’s webbing to the perfect degree, in fact I’ve almost replicated it; what my problem is, is I need to find a way to synthesize it into the goo, so that it inter mixes and naturally conjoins. That way it’s not man made, and there won’t be room for a weaker strand. Anyway, I uh... my calculations show that a single thread of spider webbing, expanded over 50 times, to the size visible readily, and usable in relation to a human’s size, would be able to stop a jet fighter, going at full speed, just as easy a steel cable. That’s a single thread...”
Nikola grinned. Finally the boy caught on. He shook the young man’s hand and gave a little nod. “I think you’d be surprised what Mr. Stark knows about, but doesn’t let on that he knows about,” he said, but let the subject go. He was more interested in the young man’s research and projects than talking about Tony Stark.
Nikola nodded as he moved over to take a look at Peter’s work on the computer. “I’ve read a fair amount into this,” he said, thinking on it. “Normally I don’t work with bio cables. My field of expertise has more to do with electricity and magnetic fields. But this is rather interesting. Look here.” He motioned toward a chemical equation, and described a way in which it could be altered just slightly, to help Peter get closer to his goal of a naturally conjoining substance. “...it might not work, but that’s a step in that direction.”
He looked at the calculations, and went to work on the computer. Bringing things here, putting them there, until it began to run a bit of a simulation. He grinned and nodded, “It’s really working. Well, to a degree. It might take weeks to find out if the substance actually just grows together. I’ll have to wait to see how that works.” He then looked to him, “And I’ve been using one of your electric theories to change amplification on this project. I’ve found that, depending on the levels, I can actually cause the cable to thicken or thin, or even change its consistency.”
He smirked, before shrugging his shoulders, “Uh, uhm... look sir, I really love that you’re here. I do, but my stuff’s hardly even remotely important or that special. I uh, I’m sure Tony himself is doing something much better, or any of the other lab rats here. I’m just toying here.”
“Sometimes it’s the toys that provide the most inspiration.” Nikola said, sounding much more wise than he was. Really, it looked like Peter was having a lot of fun in his little lab, and Nikola was a touch on the jealous side. He’d grown so bored of his own experiments and theories that he’d started teaching. And now he was committed to teaching, he didn’t have the same amount of time for play in the lab that he used to. With the powers that were coming with his dreams, he wished he had more hours in the day to practice and experiment. “I’m just leading some students through, and thought I’d pop my head in.” He added, “but if you want me to leave, I most certainly can.”
“Oh, no... no no no. Sir, no I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to insinuate I wanted you to leave; it’s just, well my stuff isn’t really that exciting, and I’m hardly the brightest or best here. I’m just Peter Parker, I’m sure there are far more intelligent and worthy inventors in this place,” he shrugged. Peter was quite the humble guy. He had little in the way of confidence, something that was growing more and more apparent in his life. Despite the fact that his life was actually going fantastic, he still figured he wasn’t the best or the brightest in anything really.
“I can show you more, if you really want. I just, well a guy of your genius should be around geniuses,” he shrugged, “Not the kid in the corner.”
“I’ll have you know that I was the kid in the corner.” Nikola said. “With an attitude like you’ve got, though, you may stay the kid in the corner.” It wasn’t meant in a mean or harsh way, though almost everything that came out of Nikola’s mouth had a patronizing tone to it. “You should undertake every experiment, every project, with the mindset of it being the most important project that you’ll ever work on. Anything else isn’t worth your time.”
Nikola turned to let himself back out. “And if you’re ever in need of any assistance outside of Stark Industries...” He pulled a card from his pocket and set it down on the desk.
Peter blinked at the comment, and then watched as Nikola left before looking to the card, “I uh... I thanks.” He frowned when he heard him leaving. Not sure how to take all of that. He just hand waved and then moved back to his equipment, after setting the card into his pocket.
