Alma hummed to herself as she made breakfast. She’d spent a lot of time learning to cook, while pregnant. It was something she could do. Something she could contribute to her growing family and impending marriage.
So she silently made breakfast while letting her love sleep.
Beth was dreaming. She was dreaming of cheering, of cheering with Addy after admitting what she’d done. And she was dreaming of falling, of leaping off of the top of the pyramid three counts too soon. On purpose.
She’d wanted to die in the dream. But she didn’t. All she dreamed was of falling, of hitting her head, of stretchers. Of bleeding and bleeding. She screamed wordlessly, soundlessly, thrashing in her sheets.
It hit Alma like a shockwave. She dropped her eggs and ran for the bedroom. "Beth?" She searched with her mind, trying to see what was going on.
Beth heard Alma and fought in the dream to get to her. But she was still broken and battered on the stretcher, still in the hospital in a coma. So hard to wake up. It was nice sleeping.
Beth? She sat on the bed next to her and brushed at her hair, and her face. Please? She tried to insert herself into the dream.
Dreaming of her body wrapped up in bandages, still in a coma, Beth blinked when she felt Alma there too. Help me wake up, I don’t want this. Please?
Focus on me. Focus on Elise, and Wrex. Please.. She took Beth’s hand in the dream, sitting next to the comatose girl. I love you, Beth. I want you, and I need you to be with me. We need you.
Gasping, Beth awoke with tears in her eyes. “Oh my god - “ She coughed, feeling the grip of the dream still upon her. “Oh, god, oh, god.” It had been too real; she could still practically feel the trach tube.
Alma wrapped her arms around Beth, an icey feeling in her chest. Not just at the coma, but what had led to it. She couldn’t even stop herself from plucking the whole thing from Beth’s mind. She started to cry, silently, and rocked Beth.
“I don’t - you don’t have to cry. I don’t even know that girl. It’s stupid, it’s not going to happen, ever. Honestly, I was just ... I don’t like being that immobile.” The trying to kill herself had been scary.
She nodded her head but the whole..talking... thing was proving to be difficult. It was a terrifying dream, not just because of the visuals. She could feel what Beth had felt. She squeezed tighter. Beth was hers. Hers and she was a good person.
Sniffling, Beth leaned back. “I didn’t wake up Elise, did I?” She felt bad for upsetting Alma, and she cupped her lover’s cheek.
“No, she’s still asleep.” She might have had a hand in that, though. She didn’t want the baby to be disturbed by their distress. Even though she tried to keep her manipulation to a minimum.
“Thank god.” Beth leaned against Alma. “I hate those dreams. I wake up feeling like I cheated on you.”
“You did not.” Alma laughed, it was a strained, but still happy sound. “You did not I promise you. I was terrified you wouldn’t wake up.”
“I’m awake. I’m here.” Beth nuzzled closer to her, burrowing into her lover’s touch. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Alma cupped Beth’s face. There were tears in her eyes. “Please. I’m so scared. I’m so scared Beth, I can’t lose you.”
“What are you talking about?” Beth blinked.
“I don’t want to lose you. Please wake up,” Alma said. There was panic in her voice, and fresh tears on her face. “Please wake up!”
“Alma, I’m awake.” Beth laughed and stroked her lover’s cheek.
But it was only in her mind that she did these things. In reality, Beth’s body lay in the bed, unmoving, breathing shallowly but regularly.
Alma shook her head, and she seemed to fade away.
“No...no!” Alma tried to grasp onto Beth’s mind again, but she couldn’t. It was like a bar of soap, slippery and impossible to grasp. Panicking, her mind called out, searching for someone, anyone who could come help her.
Beth just blinked in her mind’s eye. “What’s wrong? Why are you yelling?”
“Come back to me..please..please...!!”
Wrex heard all the yelling (and for that matter the psychic headache he suddenly got) and came running in. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
Alma turned towards him, eyes tearful. “She won’t wake up. She had a dream and now she’s laying there. I can’t even..I can’t reach her any more.”
Beth heard Alma speaking, and she tried to move her arms. But she was finding the moving in her body, not in the dreams, well. It just wasn’t happening. Wake me up!
Wrex checked Beth’s pulse, and tried to dilate her eyes. “Let me call Faiza, bring her in...” He tried to keep his voice calm, to keep Alma from panicking. “Go check on Elise.”
“Fath--”
“Go.”
