Mac chuckled as he finished cooking and then yawned, and headed for the front room, knowing AJ would be here soon. She wanted to go over a few things for the wedding. All he knew was his little sister was getting married and he felt like he was as good as married himself. Tonks had worked her way into his heart, and he loved her dearly.
Today, though, was about AJ, and he hoped their day would be fun!
AJ was pretty excited about the wedding. Her dress was chosen and ordered, and the bridesmaid dresses, too, and Applebloom’s Junior Bridesmaid dress... that part was all taken care of. She’d talked to a florist and was using Baxter Bakery for the catering and the wedding cake... now she just needed to think about photos, video, and how to set up the apple orchard. It was so thoughtful and generous of Big Mac to let them use his orchard. And AJ was tickled pink he was gonna walk her down the aisle. There was no one else in her life she’d rather give that privilege to.
She knocked on the front door, holding a notebook and some cake samples.
Mac hopped up and headed for the door, opening it wide. The scent of baking apple and cherry turnovers wafted out as he did so. “Hello, little sister. Come in.”
He stepped back and to the side, waving her in.
“Hey, Mac.” AJ said, giving her brother a grin. She stepped forward and wrapped her free arm around him for a quick hug, then snuck into his home, balancing her things in her arm. “Smells plum fantastic in here,” she said. “Whatcha cookin’?”
He hugged her, then grinned. He shook his head. She always did have a way of taking on large projects and trying to balance them.
“Making cherry and apple turnovers. Just about done, too.” He smirked. “Sit anywhere you like. I cleaned the table, if you need space.”
“Sure, thanks.” AJ said, moving to sit at the table. She set down her things. “I brought you cake samples. Have you been to Baxter Bakery? That woman can do amazing things with cake. You’ve gotta try this.” It was better than just any old cake.
“I haven’t.” He watched her move about and do things. She was always more organized than he was. “I’d be glad to try it.” He moved to her side, peering at her stuff and samples.
There were a half dozen sample pieces of cake she’d brought with her, and a couple of disposable forks. “You’ll have to tell me which one you like best. There’s vanilla, almond, chocolate, strawberry, pistachio and apple. She made apple cake for me to try. Using our apples!” She grinned brightly. “It’s delicious. May be my favorite in the bunch.”
Mac chuckled and he tried each one, chewing slowly, swallowing, hmming, then moving to the next one. One by one he moved around them until he had tried each one. He paused, then nodded. “The Strawberry and Apple are the best ones, but all of them are very good.”
“I think I like the apple best. That’s sort of a theme, innit?” She asked, breaking into a grin. “We’ll probably go with the apple. John liked that one, too. You should see my bridesmaid dresses.” She said, then opened her binder. “And my wedding dress. It’s... we’re going to look so beautiful!”
Big Mac laughed. “Sounds like.” he chuckled softly. “I’d like to.” He peered at her binder. “What sort of designs did you get?”
“Here.” AJ pulled the photos of herself and her girl friends out of the binder. They were 8x10s of the girls in their dresses. As they’d already paid for them, and were waiting for the dresses to arrive and be altered for the ceremony, the shop didn’t mind them taking pictures to show friends and relatives.
“Here’s mine, and here’s Tonks... and Deryn.” She said, pulling out the photos and showing them off one by one.
“Very nice.” His eyes lingered on Tonks’, and he gently touched the photo, his expression going soft. “Very beautiful.”
AJ watched her brother looking down at Tonks’ picture. She smiled softly. “I’m glad you’re so happy, Brother.”
Mac looked up at her. “And I’m happy for you, too, AJ. Seems like we both found what we didn’t know we were looking for.” He kissed her cheek and nodded. “I want to do something special for her. Not to take away from the planning. But... can you help me find out something she likes a lot?”
“Sure. A reconnaissance mission?” AJ said, her face brightening up. “I’ll see what I can figure out.” She added, then climbed from her seat to dig around in his fridge for something to drink. “... my birthday’s coming up, too. Maybe we can do something for it. The four of us?”
Big Mac grinned at her. “Sounds like fun. Maybe in the morning. I have plans for her that evening.” He winked at her.
“Okay, sounds good. We can spend Easter together. As a family.” AJ liked the sound of that. It made her miss Granny and Applebloom, though.
“I like that plan. And maybe do that more often.” He grinned. “Way things are going with Tonks and I, won't be long before I ask her a question.”
“Yeah?” AJ asked, grinning. “Really? That’s wonderful, Mac!”
Mac blushed and nodded. “I love her and she loves me. Dunno when, but I think it’ll be soon.” He nodded again.
“Just... y’know... don’t rush it. You’ve got all the time in the world.” She paused. “I have to figure out what I’m going to do when I end up moving in with John and leaving Tonks. Is she going to move in with you?” She asked. “I mean, I feel a little bad, leaving her all alone, but she was alone before I moved in.”
Mac nodded. “I know. We’ll figure it out.” And he hmmed. “I dunno. I’d welcome her in a heartbeat.” Mac nodded again. “She and I seem to meet, and connect, utterly.”
“That’s lucky.” AJ said, nodding. “It’s lucky to have found someone that makes you feel that way.”
Mac nodded. “I reckon so. I’ve always been lucky. Has a good family, has a good sis. has a good girlfriend...” He smirked.
“Yup.” AJ said, giving a little nod. She loved her brother, and she was so happy the two of them had found wonderful people, had found happy and fulfilling lives. “Let me know if you need help ring shopping.”
Mac nibbled his lip, then glanced at her. “Maybe we can do that this next week. Just in case.” He blushed and grinned.
“Yeah??” AJ asked, beaming. “Really?? I’m thrilled! Of course! We can definitely go shopping together. Any day. Just name the day!” She got up and hugged her brother tightly. “Congrats, Mac!”
He hugged her close. “Don’t get all spontantiated and all. Not asking her yet. Just soonish.”
“I know! I just... I won’t say anything. I’m so excited for you! You have to let me know when you do, okay?” She added, then released him. “And I expect some sort of title in your wedding. Flower girl? Flower girl. I think I can handle that.”
Big Mac grinned. “Silly. I bet Tonks will have a better place for you to stand.” He nodded and kissed her hair. “Thank you.”
She couldn’t help it. She hugged him again. “I’m so excited! It’s all happening so fast! So fast.” She was nearly breathless, and moved to sit back down again. “...like, life. Life, you know? It’s here. It’s happening. It’s changing.”
“Hang in there, filly.” He hugged her as he sat down next to her. “Deep breaths now. Calm yourself.” He gently stroked her hair, as he would when combing it when she was younger.
“That’s life.”
“It’s good.” She said, finally, giving him a smile. She was glad that she was so close with her brother. And her brother’s soon-to-be-fiance! It was all very exciting. Thrilling and terrifying, but more exciting than anything else. “It’s really good.”
FIN.
