At least six more weeks. Cass would have to wear the sling for at least another six weeks. That was definitely not what she had wanted to hear, but she supposed that there wasn’t much she could do about it. She just hoped that those six weeks went by fast. She was grateful to Jubilee and Laura for all the help they’d given her during this time, but she was sure that they would be happy when they didn’t have to anymore. While that was true, she was glad that Laura had agreed to come with her that afternoon. She hadn’t minded that the other girl had decided to wait outside, she just hadn’t wanted to go alone and considering she couldn’t exactly drive at the moment, so not having to go alone had been nice. “Part of me wishes that I had the whole super healing thing.” She said as they walked down the street.
Laura nodded in agreement. “It’s pretty sweet. I don’t like the rest of it, though. I think I’d rather not have anything to do with the dreams at all and no healing powers.” Everything had gone so right and wrong since the dreams started. She had a stable new home, a girl she loved, real friends, and a legal income. Of course she had horrible nightmares, she’d slept with her father multiple times on accident, and honestly she felt like her brain was coming apart at the seams a lot of the time. She didn’t really have the capacity to deal with all the things that needed dealing with. “So you’re stuck for a while longer, huh?”
Cass could relate in a few ways to Laura as far as the nightmares and her brain feeling like it was going to explode part went. The dream where she’d murdered the man had subsided somewhat, but now she’d been having the one where she ran away again and each time there was more. She’d spent ten years on her own, from eight to almost eighteen and were it not for the training her father had forced her to do, she never would have survived. She couldn’t imagine what the rest of the dreams would show her, “Yeah, at least another six weeks. So, you guys are stuck helping me for a little while longer.”
“No big deal.” Laura said with a smile. “We don’t mind. You’d help us if the situation was reversed.” She smiled as she walked. The sun felt great on her skin. “Do you want to stop and get ice cream?”
And Cass had helped as much as she could when Jubilee had first brought Laura to their place after the incident with Logan, “Of course I would,” She returned the smile and nodded at the suggestion of ice cream, “Ice cream sounds like a good idea to me.”
“Good, there’s a nice place a little down the street.” She hummed as she they went along. “You must be bored out of your mind most of the time.”
Cass nodded, “I am. I mean, I’ve gone out a few times, taken Ginger on walks and even took the bus to the mall, but aside from that, there’s not much I can do on my own, so yeah.” She was just glad that she hadn’t broken her leg or something that would have kept her inside no matter what.
“Yeah, that sucks. I’d be so annoyed if I couldn’t move my shoulder at all.” Laura made a face, and got the door to the ice cream shop. “But we’ll have a party or something when you’re all healed up.”
“Seriously, the worst part is still just sleeping. I mean, who actually sleeps on their back all night? I can’t be aware of how I’m sleeping and sleep at the same time.” Cass said as they went into the shop and she smiled at that suggestion, “That is a great idea. I could use a party.”
“I think you could, too.” Laura said with a nod. “Maybe you’d sleep better if you had someone there to keep you on your back.” For once, Laura wasn’t talking about sex. She knew some people slept better next to another person. “I could loan you Jubilee.” It was perfect, since Jubilee didn’t sleep.
Cass laughed as they went up to the counter, “For the next six weeks? Won’t you miss her?” Cass knew that things were a little complicated between Laura and Jubilee, but she was still happy that her friends were happy and hoped that they would eventually work out whatever little complications they had. “By the way, ice cream is on me.” Since getting access to her money, Cass had, had more money than she knew what to do with and unlike others who would go hog wild, there wasn’t very much that Cass wanted or needed, so she enjoyed spending some of it on her friends.
“I’d know where she is, and I could snuggle her from the other side.” Laura smiled brightly. “Thanks. Everything looks really good.” She hovered over the glass, looking in at all the flavors.
“I don’t know if my bed is big enough for three of us.” Cass could only imagine what the girl on the other side of the counter was thinking right now and she was glad that it wasn’t a guy. “But we can see it it’s possible.” She ordered a cookie dough in a cone then waited for Laura to place her order before paying for both.
Laura got mint chocolate chip, and bounced happily while Cass paid. “We’ll get a bigger bed, if necessary.”
“I guess that’s always an option,” Cass smirked as their ice creams were scooped out then handed over to them, “Lets sit over there,” She gestured towards a table by the window. She hadn’t told either Jubilee or Laura about what her and Logan had talked about when they went out for lunch the weekend before and she knew that they were bound to find out eventually, so she thought that now might be a good time to tell Laura, “So, I saw Logan last weekend.”
Laura took her seat and a few licks before asking Cass about that. She wanted to know about it, but ice cream was more important at the moment. “Yeah? How did it go?”
“Well, we decided that it’s probably better for both of us if we were just friends.” Cass had thought about it quite a bit and after that one post on the net about Logan and her run in with Alyssa, Cass was sure that she’d made the right decision. “It was the only way for me to not wind up getting hurt in the long run.”
Laura nodded. “That’s probably true. It’s not his fault, but. . . yeah.” She took a couple bites of her ice cream. “I’m glad you’re friends, at least. You can never have too many, and he’ll make growly noises at any boys that try to mess with you.” She stopped to think for a minute. “But I would too, so there’s that.” She didn’t want to ever see her friends get hurt. Not like the dreams, where it was inevitable. She could do something about it here.
Cass smiled and licked around the bottom of her ice cream before nodding, “Yeah, he pretty much said he’d keep an eye on anyone I dated.” Not that Cass had anyone lined up exactly. Gav was nice and cute, but he also seemed a little distant. Not that she wasn’t a little distant at the moment as well.
“He’s going to wind up running around everywhere if all the girls he’s spent time with start dating other people. Maybe we should try to be nice and all sleep with each other.” Laura giggled.
“I think that would make his brain explode.” Cass laughed, shaking her head a bit, “Especially if he got to watch.” Now that would be an interesting turn of events, but Cass just didn’t swing that way. She could admit that the video of Jubilee and Laura was hot, but she hadn’t felt anything while watching it.Okay, so maybe a tiny bit; she was human after all.
Laura laughed loudly at that. The mental picture was too hilarious. “Logan’s too hands on for that.” She remembered how hands on exactly and sighed a little. Why couldn’t someone else be her father?
“You’re right. He wouldn’t be able to just sit back and watch.” While part of Cass wished that she’d gotten a chance to do more than just fool around with Logan, she knew it was better this way. Easier to get over her feelings and not get hurt.
“You’ll find someone nice and not crazy.” Laura said with a nod. She liked Logan, but the craziness was a definite thing.
Cass nodded, smiling, “I know. Logan definitely has a pull on the women, but I know he’s not the commitment type, so I decided to get out before I got too far in. We’re still friends, so I’m happy.” Her smile widened slightly, “To be honest, I’m kind of hoping I find someone soon so that I can see his face when Logan threatens him,” It was probably a little mean, but it was bound to be amusing whenever it happened.
Laura snickered. “I’m sure you’ll find someone.” She kind of hoped she’d be there to see the guy’s face when it happened.
“I still have to tell Jubilee that nothing more is going to happen with me and Logan. I think she’ll be somewhat disappointed.” Cass bit into the side of her cone now that the ice cream was low enough, “Logan thinks she’ll be a little relieved that he’s not taking my attention away from her now.” Cass could see it going both ways.
“I dunno. Jubilee’s reactions are a little hard to guess, sometimes. But she will probably try to find someone else to hook you up with, so watch out! At least they’ll probably be hot.”
Had this been almost two months earlier, Cass would have dreaded Jubilee trying to set her up again and probably would have turned bright red, but that Cassandra hadn’t experienced the things she had in the last two months between Logan and the dreams and she honestly didn’t think that there was anything Jubilee could do or say that would make her blush the way she had when Jubilee had gotten Logan to go out with them after her trial. “I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.”
“I’ll try to make sure she picks someone who’s not completely insane.” Laura promised with a laugh.
“I appreciate that.” Cass smiled and finished off her ice cream cone, “Should we head back now?”
Laura nodded. “Yeah, it was nice hanging out with you.”
“We should do it more often,” Cass said, getting to her feet and tossing her napkin in the trash as they headed towards the door, “I mean we do live together and all.” She smiled at the other girl, glad that she’d come out to the doctor with her today.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Laura grabbed the door for her, smiling brightly.
