Rating: PG 13

With each night that Spock dreams there comes a bit more clarity. For weeks now, he's taken to leaving a pad and pen by his bed so that he can take notes as soon as he's awake. This is how he remembers even the smallest details, like the sounds and the smells that cling to him in the very early morning hours. Things just aren't busy enough, he supposes, not only does he need to grade and to research, he also has to record his dreams in dizzying detail. He can never quite be sure what will be important in retrospect.
Through the night, he tosses and turns on his bed. In his mind's eye, he find himself on an alien planet. It doesn't make sense in the real world, but in his dreams, Spock knows he's not fully human and isn't in the least disturbed by this fact. Sometimes he is a child running on rugged terrain with a friendly hulking beast at his side. Sometimes he tumbles and wipes green blood delicately on dark pants, hoping that his mother won't notice when he returns home.
Sometimes he is older, far more impassive than is normal - even for Spock. He stands before friends, holds up his hand and offers them a blessing. "Live long and prosper," he says aloud in a perfectly unemotional sort of way.
When he wakes, Spock scribbles the phrase down in his book and then turns back over and falls back into a deep sleep.
His newest dream has him walking down long corridors following an older man closely with Kirk and Sulu in tow. Their pace is fast and steady. Something is wrong, Spock isn't entirely sure what - this detail always is forgotten upon waking - but he knows it's horrible and important. His face is passionless as the older man, the Captain, speaks. But he is worried deep inside.
When Kirk is promoted to first officer, Spock protests. In the dream, he dislikes Kirk, is biased against him for some reason which, again, is lost to Spock when he's awake. "Captain. Please." Spock is looking at the older man, "I apologize, but the complexities of human pranks escape me."
"It's not a prank, Spock." The Captain is meeting Spock's eye. Perhaps because he is well versed in emotional repression, Spock thinks he spots a hint of fear in the older man. "And I'm not the Captain. You are."
Kirk and Spock share a look that isn't entirely friendly. The three men walk past him into an elevator. A door shuts and Spock is alone. For a moment, he doesn't move. The weight of it all falls on his shoulders. He breathes deeply and turns. There is work to be done.
It is at this point in the dream that Spock wakes suddenly, but not with a start. He stares up fiercely at his ceiling and exhales before reaching for his dream journal.
