Who: Verity and Thor When: April 1 Where: OBGYN office What: A check-up Rating/Warnings: PG-13 (Medical stuff, pregnancy stuff) Status: Complete!
Verity was shivering as she sat in the chair in the waiting room. It wasn’t possible. It simply wasn’t possible. Thor was probably just... picking up a strange vibe. She hadn’t had sex, so how could she be pregnant? Unless you count the dreams. Verity had been having sex dreams pretty much nonstop since … well. Since she and Oliver made a little pact together. No release until they could do it together. Now Verity was regretting it. She’d been climaxing in her sleep. Did that make her body think it was pregnant? That would explain everything!
Anyway, she’d left her urine sample in the bathroom, and was sitting in the waiting room, hugging her knees, watching the women in varying states of pregnancy wander around. One looked like she was smuggling a basketball. It was unnerving. Hopefully Thor would arrive soon and take her mind off of all this. She only had a few minutes left before her appointment.
Thor was sorry he was late and arrived in the next moment, sliding in and settling down next to her, and hugged Verity. “Hello, my friend.” He snuggled her close as he glanced around, his bag slung to the other side of him.
“Hey,” Verity said, perking up a little bit when she saw Thor come in and wrap an arm around her. She leaned in against his side. He was warm and soft, yet strong. “They’re just testing my... well.” She sat up a little. “We’ll know in a few minutes.” She hadn’t had the courage to take a test at home.
Thor hugged her close and nodded. “It’ll be okay. No matter what the answer is. It’ll be okay.” He nodded. He would make sure of that.
Verity nodded. It was a hard thought to process, but she managed somehow. She was about to respond, to thank him for coming, but the lady nurse came out and called her name. Verity stood, looking pale and frightened, and followed the nurse through the door and down a little hall.
“So, congratulations, Mr and Mrs. Ashford!” The nurse was far too chipper for Verity’s liking. Actually, were she there under any other circumstances, Verity might have liked the woman. She seemed friendly enough. “Can you step up here for me? We’ll get your weight, then you can meet the doctor.”
Verity was too shell-shocked to correct the woman. She glanced over her shoulder at Thor with a deer-in-the-headlights look, then stepped up onto the scale. Dumbfounded.
Thor followed, gently hugging her from behind. “I’m not her husband, just a friend, standing in for the time being. Moral support, and all that.” He nodded to the nurse, his smile warm and friendly.
He gently patted Verity’s back before standing back. This was going to be interesting.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t assume.” The nurse was still smiling, though, as she jotted down Verity’s weight.
“I’m not married,” Verity said, as if she was just coming around to the conversation, only thirty seconds too late. She glanced at Thor, her eyes sad and terrified.
“It’s none of my business, honey.” The nurse said, then took Verity’s arm. “Come on this way. The doctor will be in to see you in just a minute, and I should get your temperature and blood pressure readings.” She led Verity into a room and had her sit down on the examination table, then took her blood pressure and temperature readings.
“All right, strip from the waist down. She’ll be doing an ultrasound.” She said, then gave Verity a disposable blanket for her to cover herself. The nurse left quickly, leaving Verity’s chart in a bin by the door.
Verity glanced over at Thor, then down to the plasticy paper sheet she was holding in her lap. It was like the kind they gave you as a bib at the dentist’s office, only the size of a bath towel.
Thor followed them in and then nodded. He stepped back while the nurse was working, then chuckled as she left. “I can step outside, or simply turn away, my friend, until you are, ah, covered.” Even if he had seen it all, he was not her lover anymore and he did not want to make her uncomfortable. He gently squeezed her shoulder.
“I... I don’t...” She didn’t really care. “Just don’t stare like a perv, and we’ll be fine.” She said, and attempted a teasing smile. It came out a bit forced because, well, it was. She was terrified.
With that she dropped her trousers and panties, and climbed onto the examination table, arranging the sheet thing over her lap. A moment later, the doctor walked in.
“Hello, Mrs. Ashford. I see we’ve got a positive pregnancy test! Everything looks good on your chart, can you tell me the first day of your last period?” The doctor, apparently, got straight down to business.
“Uh...” Verity said, glancing at Thor for help. AS IF HE’D KNOW. Then she turned back to the doctor. “I’m not sure?”
“All right,” said the doctor. “Lay back, let’s take a look. This early on, we’d usually do a transvaginal ultrasound. Are you all right with that?”
Verity nodded. She didn’t know what any of that meant, but if that’s how things were done, she wasn’t about to challenge the doctor.
The doctor nodded. “Lay back on the table. Sir, you can sit right there.” She positioned him by Verity’s shoulder, and turned the monitor so they both could see. The next part involved a large ultrasound probe, like a dildo, covered in what looked like a condom, with plenty of blue goop. It was inserted, and the black and white screen lit up.
“There you go, Mrs. Ashford. Your baby’s heartbeat.”
Verity felt like she might die.
Thor looked away for a moment, then moved to her side, gently holding one of her hands to give her comfort as the whole thing happened. He smiled softly as they heard the sound, and saw it.
He gently sat next to her and stroked her hair. “You are a mother, my dear friend. Everything will be okay.” He smiled softly. He knew this particular situation might be just a little weird for Verity, with a thing up inside her and the sound and picture. He addressed the doctor. “Can we get a recording please?”
“Of course,” the doctor responded. She punched a couple of buttons on the machine to check it out, measure the baby from crown to rump, and take some pictures. She printed out a couple and sent the rest to be printed onto a dvd.
Verity was absolutely flabbergasted. A dvd?? Really?? She turned from the monitor to Thor, and back again. “Oh, my God. It’s real. This is real. How is this real? How... old is it?”
The doctor chuckled. “Looks like you’re... about eight weeks in. Chance of miscarriage at this stage are low, considering we’ve seen the heartbeat. It’s a strong one, too.”
“Very real, my friend.” Thor nodded, and hugged Verity.
Verity was staring at the monitor. The doctor took measurements, checking how much amniotic fluid was in there, what the uterus diameter was, the size and shape of the baby, all of it. Verity could only lay there and stare, even as awkward as it was having a dildocam moved around inside of her.
Finally the exam was over. The doctor asked if Verity had any questions, or concerns. To which Verity could only shake her head. The doctor gave her some information in a folder, with phone numbers, warning signs, prenatal vitamin instructions, what to eat and not to eat, things of that nature. Verity accepted it dumbly, then hugged the thing to her chest.
“Thank you,” Verity said to the doctor, just before the OB left the examination room.
Thor hugged her close, then. “It’ll be okay, my friend. Just breathe.” He gently stroked her back. He knew this had to be a shock for her.
It was a huge shock. She turned and curled against him for a moment, just breathing. Her eyes fell closed. There was fear, too. What if this wasn’t, as she hoped, a baby that was created with Oliver? What if this was... something else? What if she’d been roofied, or some other nonsense? She had so many questions, and absolutely no answers. Well, she had one now. The reason she’d been feeling so sick.
She pulled out of the hug, climbed off the table and pulled her clothes on. “...thank you for being here with me.” She said, slipping into her shoes. Then she stepped over and hugged him again. “I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
He hugged her back and nodded. “You’re welcome. You’d find a way through it.” He stroked her hair. “And I’ll be there to help, whatever you need.”
“You’re the best.” Verity said, leaning against him. She rested her head on his shoulder for a moment, soaking up all of that support and affection. It made her feel a little more like herself. “First thing’s first. I should... get some prenatal vitamins, ginger ale, and get back to work.”
“Sounds like a plan. And next week, we should have lunch, or ice cream.” He nodded.
“Definitely.” Finally she pulled back and gave his hand a squeeze. “Very soon.” FIN.
