Pansy still wasn’t sure what prompted John to find her and offer her this job. Her transcripts were good, her grades and test scores were really good, but she hadn’t had a whole lot of real world experience. She was finding that she was pretty good at all this stuff, actually, and was enjoying working there, so however he’d found her didn’t really matter anymore.
She was in the office, just finished taking a phone call at the front desk, and turned when the door chimed and John walked in. She gave him a smile. “Hi.”
John had chosen her because despite a lack of experience, she had demonstrated intelligence, warmth, and confidence, and he was impressed. He thought she would be a good addition. So far, he had been proven correct. “Hello, Pansy. How are you this morning?”
The day was bound to be a long one, but there was always time to say hello to a friend.
“Good.” Pansy said, giving a smile as she stood up straight. She wasn’t wearing ‘work clothes’ really, as she wasn’t sure about changing up her wardrobe. But she was working, so maybe that made what she was wearing ‘work clothes’? Anyway, she was there, dressed, and had messages for John in her outstretched hand.
“Need a coffee, but what else is new.” She grinned. “How’re you?”
John took the messages with one hand and brought his other out from behind his back. “Just like you like it.” The coffee was from the shop nearby and had been made to order. He grinned. He liked her attitudes. “Pretty good. Haven’t dived into the madness, yet, so no headache.” He shrugged. Working here was nice, being able to help people, but it also sometimes was a bit weird.
“Jesus, really?” Pansy asked, then laughed, reaching forward to accept the coffee from him. “You’re amazing, John, you know that, right?” She said, then lifted it to sip. It was perfect. Sometimes it boggled her mind how considerate he was. “Well, good. Enjoy your last few minutes of freedom before the madness consumes you.” She said after swallowing. “Thanks for this,” she added, holding up the coffee.
“I just take care of my people.” He nodded to her. She was one of his people now. Saving someone’s life made that happen to him. “You’re welcome.”
He glanced around. “Has Mister Green been in yet?” It was a company wide joke. Mister Green had founded RPI and was never seen by anyone, just heard. He was in sometimes, without ever being seen entering, and gone with no one seeing him leaving.
“If he was, I just missed him.” Pansy said, giving a little shrug and a smile. He was kinda like Charlie from Charlie’s Angels. That made Pansy feel like an Angel sometimes. She tried flirting a bit with Mister Green over the phone when she first started, but he didn’t seem all that interested in her flirtations. “Handsome man, yeah?” She added, though she’d never seen his face.
“So they say. only met him once, very quickly, my first day, and it’s all rather fuzzy. I was doing so much that day.” He chuckled.
“How are you adapting here?”
“Things are good.” Pansy said. She was sorta left alone, which she liked, and her job requirements were made perfectly clear, which she really liked, too. She sipped again from her coffee, giving him a grin. “Though, I’d like to get a little more hands-on experience. I’ve been stuck doing all this clerical stuff... think I could get out in the field a bit more with you?”
“Actually, yes. You’ve shown you can handle the paperwork. Next week, i start a new case, and you are slotted to come into the field with me. How does that sound?” John was grinning widely.
“Really?” Pansy asked, breaking into a grin. “Awesome! Sounds awesome. I can’t wait to get out and really do some work around here.” Besides, one of the interns kept hitting on her in the break room. Awkward.
John nodded. “really.” She deserved it and it was what he had hired her for, anyway. “You will be awesome. Give me about a half-hour to get sorted, then come to the office, and we can start going over the outside protocols so it’ll be fresh in your mind.”
“That sounds great.” Pansy said, nodding. She felt like a broken record, but she was pretty thrilled about getting her hands dirty, finally. “I’ll come meet you in your office in thirty minutes.” She gave him a smile, then wandered off to finish up some filing she had to do. She was grinning and holding her coffee close to her chest.
“Sounds good.” He smiled as he headed in to his room, and closed the door. Trainign Pansy would be an honest pleasure. He was very glad he had hired her.
