Who: James Wilson, Ginny, Fred and George Weasley
When: Wednesday 3/27
Where: Irvine Hospital
What: The twins volunteered their sister into charity work.
Rating/Warnings: Low
Status: Complete
True to their word, the Weasley Twins with their Cheshire grins and mischievous glances, had not particularly subtly convinced their sister to visit the children in James (cute, but never adorable) Wilson’s oncology ward.
Ginny was a popular actress for those in a younger age bracket, and they had been assured that she had more than a few admirers there. The kids would love it. Wilson had already given the odd payment of clicky pens, and so the deal was sealed.
It all begged the question of why the Twins were trying so hard for no real personal gain -- but even if they’d been asked, they probably would have only shared a knowing look with each other and given no real answer anyway. They were like that - and rarely if ever felt the need to explain themselves to anyone.
Percy, who had his own claim staked in this situation, was not present. The brother that didn’t fit in had begged off from showing up -- citing instead a previous engagement with his friend Oliver Wood. The twins half suspected that the bespectacled man just had little to no interest in being in the same room with three of his siblings at the same time. In their own way, they couldn’t exactly blame him for it. But they did anyway.
Still, they were disturbingly curious about their brother’s Doctor, and didn’t really need Percy around for further investigation. In fact, it was possibly better that he wasn’t.
Wilson had come in even though it was his rotating monthly Weekday Off. Which worked out fine - the kids got to see him in casual clothes for a change, and he got to do things that weren’t strictly medical but would still help his patients. He was armed with Easter cookies from Baxter’s Bakery and clad in jeans, tennis shoes, and a t-shirt from McGill University. Even his hair looked fluffy and happy.
Which he was. He grinned when he heard a knock on his door and saw two red-haired faces appear in the window. “Come on in.”
When the twins had asked, Ginny had been happy to accept. She would have even done it for free but when the twins had offered payment she wasn’t stupid enough to say no. There were plenty of things that she could think of she would like from them or from that to do but it was a matter for another day. It was why she was there, without her bodyguard, and in a simple pair of jeans and a tee. So without waiting further she knocked on the door she had scribbled down hoping the twins had given her the right place.
The Twins had just let themselves into Wilson’s office a moment before -- Fred peering at all the things about them, and George smiling brightly to no one but himself. There hadn’t been nearly enough time for any sort of fun gossip when Ginny knocked, but that was alright, they supposed. There was always more time for things like that.
Fred opened the door, without waiting for Wilson -- because he knew it’d be Ginny -- it was who they’d been waiting for, after all. “Gin!” He said, and was echoed neatly by Fred. It wasn’t a stretch to say that their kid sister was a family favorite -- all of the siblings loved her, possibly the best. And so she shouldn’t have been surprised at a tackled hug from the both of them.
“Oi,” Fred said, and George was close behind him. “That’s Wilson, yeah? He gave us pens, so it’s all his favor in payment.” They bubbled with energy, as always.
Wilson stood up, waving lamely at Ginny before reaching out to shake her hand. “James Wilson, head of Oncology here. ... er. Cancer, basically. I really appreciate you coming out. Percy always speaks so well of you.” James couldn’t help but grin a little to himself, looking at the twins.
Ginny couldn’t help but laugh as she returned her brother’s hugs enthusiastically. She loved all her brothers but there was just something about the twins infectious laughter and spirit that she loved a little extra. “Pens, huh? What if I’m more of the type that likes to write in crayons?” She joked lightly.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Ginny said happily giving him a friendly smile as she shook his hand. “No problem. I do actually love kids and well, who can say no when Fred and George ask?”
“We can get you some crayons,” Fred said.
“As your favor.” George finished. Because they did that. Starting and stopping sentences between the both of them until their thoughts were whole and complete, voiced separately and together all at once.
But then they hung back a little, because as fun as they were, this wasn’t really their show for the day -- they did know that, sometimes.
“I know I won’t be able to,” Wilson laughed. Even if Percy told him no, he’d probably do whatever Fred and George asked, within reason. “Well. There’s three kids on the ward, and I must warn you, Niles is a huge fan. He says he’s going to marry you when he gets well.” Wilson tried not to sound downbeat, tried not to let on that he knew Niles’ prognosis didn’t leave a lot of room for either of those things. “So if he tries to flirt with you, well. He’s eight. Be gentle.”
"Crayons really?" She shot her brothers a skeptical glance. "Nice try. You are going to have to do better than that as a favor."
Ginny nodded as she listened to Wilson speak. It really was quite sad when children were sick. "Lucky for him I have a soft spot for eight year olds and some time to spare." She would make sure the little boy was more than happy when she left, at least for a little while.
The brothers only smiled their Cheshire smiles and shrugged, silent for now. They knew it wouldn’t have been that easy to get out of the favors -- but the way they saw it, their older more-serious brother might be owing them a favor or three after this, anyway. Always a few steps ahead, the twins were.
“Lead on,” George said, to Wilson -- he had not missed that mark of stoicism in the doctor’s tone, and as the more empathetic of the brothers (even if no one else knew it), he laid a quick hand on Fred’s elbow, as if keeping him from speaking.
Wilson smiled, shaking his head. “I don’t know, Niles is ... I hope things turn around for him.” Wilson didn’t pray often, but he’d been praying for NIles. He put his hands into his jeans pockets, smiling at the nurses as he led a small troupe of redheads to the children’s cancer ward. Things looked more cheerful there, with brightly colored walls and cartoons on most of the TVs.
He lead his Cheer Army toward a small girl’s room, knocking on the door. “Sally? It’s me, James. How’re you feeling?” Better for the girl to recognize Ginny on her own.
Ginny gave her brothers a smirk before allowing herself to follow Wilson feeling a bit somber. She reminded herself that as somber as the place was it was also a place of great hope and healing for some.
Once they were inside Ginny shot the girl a smile and a wave. She always tried not to overwhelm her tiniest fans.
The twins hung back, because -- well. They weren’t popular Disney ginger actresses. Which was to say, they were not Ginny. Even if they were clearly related (what Weasley wasn’t? They were all ginger, freckled things with long, sharp noses). Instead, Fred lazily rested his chin on his brother's’ shoulder, and George, in turn, leaned against the frame of the door to support the both of their weight.
The girl in question -- Sally? -- looked about as excited as they felt though, and that was saying something. Oh yeah, Percy was totally gonna owe them.
Wilson couldn’t help but beam as Sally bounced and hugged her heroine, then himself, in turn. Was there anything in the world as rewarding as the laugh of a child? He didn’t think so. Sally would probably get better. He had given it a seventy/forty chance, though he often liked to be a pessimist with his patients. Easier on everyone that way.
Ginny grinned and returned the girl's hug enthusiastically. It was the fans that made her job worth it and when she said it she meant it. "What would you say if I brought you a present?" She asked the girl with a smile before producing a small package of the shows merchandise from her oversized purse. Ginny always came prepared.
“You didn’t bring us presents,” Fred said, playfully petulant, because he was still there, man. George only elbowed his brother, in a way that looked too practiced to be very serious.
Wilson laughed, stroking the little girl’s hair. “Those are her brothers.” He knew that Sally had a few herself, and that she’d understand. He also knew she’d appreciate the movies, especially since she had so many things to watch that weren’t Ginny.
"Fred and George," Ginny said introducing her brothers not confusing the pair of them. "You want them? I can send them home with you. They're always good for a laugh."
The twins only tittered in the doorway, Fred throwing a wink to the little girl, and George giving a bright smile and a wave. “We taught Ginny everything she knows,” one of them explained to the ecstatic, gift bellied child.
“So, you’re welcome for that,” said the other.
The little girl laughed brightly, and Wilson thought he could see her crush forming in the air, arching toward the twins. He kissed her forehead and moved so that the little one could gossip with Ginny more. Leaning against the doorframe with the twins, Wilson beamed.
“Yeah yeah...” Ginny told her twin brothers with a laugh before heading to sit beside the girl on the bed. “Want to see the new pictures for the upcoming shows?” She said as she fished her phone out of her bag and showed her the pictures of her and the cast on there. If she wasn’t ill she would have offered to give her a tour of the set.
The twins stuck their tongues out in perfect unison, and then let Ginny do her thing with the kid, instead turning two sets of twinkling eyes onto Wilson. They had that hungry, predatory sort of look about them. Play with us.
“So,” said Fred, slightly hushed to not bother Ginny and the star-gazing Sally.
“How are you?” George finished.
Wilson blinked. “Really good, actually. Percy and I have been together for a month, trying to think of something to do next month.” Wilson was the sort of sap who liked to celebrate the stretches of time he got to spend with the people he loved. “How are you two?”
Ginny entertained the little girl gladly but she also kept an ear on everyone else’s conversation. She really wasn’t in the know so much on her brother’s lives, there was a lot to keep track of, but she knew more than people thought she did. She was good at subtly listening and seeing clues. Though she didn’t ask any open questions.
Not that the Twins would say so, but they found it terribly strange that their brother had managed to find someone to be around for long periods of time. He was usually so... well. Standoffish. To say the least. Fred frowned, and George hmmed and haahed for a moment. And then, as if both deciding something at once, they shrugged. “We’re good. Getting ready for our birthday, obviously,” said one.
The other only smiled, glancing at Ginny, who was so clearly spying. They’d really trained her well. “Twenty-three isn’t so important a number, but how could we disappoint our fans?”
“Twenty-three’s very important, actually. It means you’ve been able to drink legally for two years here, and by now you know how to do it.” Wilson winked, smiling at Ginny. “You haven’t told her, have you.”
He waited until Ginny had finished speaking to the little girl to give her his happiest smile and shake her hand. “I don’t know if they told you,” he beamed. “I’m Percy’s boyfriend.”
Ginny gave him a smirk. "No they didn't tell me but they didn't have to. They said you were a doctor," it wasn't hard to put two and two together. "Nice to meet you officially though."
“Awww,” said the two in unison.
Hey now, it was just more fun when people figured things out on their own. The Twins figured out secrets, but didn’t always care to disclose them. They smiled at the adorable new-introductions between sister and brother’s better half before winking at the Sally again.
“What’s next?” asked George.
Wilson waved at Sally and let her know that a nurse would be by soon for checks before ushering them all back into the hall. “Next is Niles. He might uh. Screech a little.” Wilson grinned, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly. “He really likes you, Ginny.”
Ginny nodded. "Right, prepare for fan boy screeching," with a grin. It was kind of adorable really. "Pictures will be necessary then. All kids have cell phones now right?"
“We do,” Fred said.
“But we’re not kids anymore, Gin.” Finished George.
Basically, in their own Twin way, they were saying they’d take pictures.
Wilson grinned, pulling out his own iPhone. “I’m still a kid. I’ve got this. ... we’ll get every angle.” He grinned at the Twins, moving to open the door to Niles’ room. “Fred, George, Miss Ginny, shall we?”
Niles was a boy of about nine with dark blond hair and freckles. He was idly playing a video game on a DS when he saw a troupe of redheads walk in. Suddenly he dropped the handheld. “No way” the little kid grinned.
Ginny smiled and waved in a nonthreatening way as she made her way into the room. “Hello Niles,” she said easily as she made her way over to his bed and sat down. He really was an adorable kid.
It was apparent that the Twins had a newfound respect for Wilson. Every angle, indeed. Whatever was this man doing with the only person in the family who wouldn’t know what humor was if it bit him? Fred eyed the man with the air of someone who was both wary and terribly curious at the same time. It was like Wilson was a puzzle, and if he looked long enough, he might find the pieces.
George, on the other hand, only smiled and ignored both brother and Doctor -- instead watching as Niles clearly showed off his crush on their littlest sibling. It was -- well. Cute. He took pictures. A lot of them. “We’ve brought you a little sister as a present,” he told the boy -- this was the one, he recalled, that James Wilson had seemed sad about.
It felt good for Wilson to just spend time with Niles that was frivolous and fun. Normally he was there to help monitor his chemo, or to watch his slow decline and monitor his pain medication. Laughing and taking pictures of Niles and Ginny was what he and Niles both needed.
Ginny laughed and took what felt like numerous pictures before deciding that they all needed to be in the pictures. “How about we make everyone else take some picture too? You know Dr. Wilson wants to be in one with us too!” She was sure they could convince one of the nurses to take one of all them. Happy memories for the boy to look back on.
In the end, it wasn’t hard to find people to take pictures for them, and it was a little weird to be piled up next to each other -- both of the twins making a show of leaning precariously on Ginny and Wilson -- bunny ears held up behind the little boy’s head. “I can pose like this all day,” one of them threatened.
Wilson hugged Niles and could feel himself hoping for not the first time that day that the little boy would go to sleep and find his cancer mysteriously gone. Unfortunately, he knew that wasn’t generally how diseases worked, and he tried to compartmentalize - enjoy the moment, no tears, no frowns. Better for none of them to know.
Ginny pulled her hair back into a messy ponytail. "The way these two," she motioned to her brothers, "Were carrying on I thought they had something painful planned.”
“What? Never!” George had a look on his face that was the best feigned indignation that anyone could have come up with -- Fred, on the other hand, pulled a face that was so close to innocent it was -- well. Nearly believable. That, of course, was the last photo that was snapped.
Goodbyes were given, and it was clear that Niles’ crush on Ginny had been deepened incredibly by the moment. A job well done, the twins might say, and actually did once they were in the halls again.
Wilson promised Niles that all of the photos would be emailed to him as soon as possible, and he hugged Ginny as soon as they were in the hall. “Thank you all. Very much.”
Ginny returned the hug happily. “Really thank you. I haven’t had that much fun in a while and it is nice to have a chance to do something for the fans. Besides they are all awesome kids and deserve every little bit of it.” It reminded them all how lucky they were to have what they did, especially their health. “Can I come back again?”
“S’what we’re here for,” the twins told Wilson in their weird echoing sort of way before shrugging nonchalantly. We’re cool, those expressions said. We make our sister to charity stuff, and she’s cool. And all together, it’s pretty rad.
At least, that’s what they assumed their expressions said. Mostly they probably just looked smug. Not everyone, after all, could speak Silent Twin. George ruffled Ginny’s hair. “You’ll have to come again. That boy loves you.”
“You guys can come whenever you want. Really. If I’m in my office, odds are I’m just doing paperwork.” He’d been used to being the advice dispensary at his last job, the one nurses came to when they wanted help with their boyfriends or families. “Paperwork, that I can do while having a chat.”
Ginny made a face at her older brothers. "Paperwork can always wait," At least it did in her book. "I will certainly be back though."
