Tink was on her break at the shop. She was one of the few people there, actually, since it was such a slow day. She was sitting on a bench in the driveway leading up to the garage proper, eating a peanut butter and honey sandwich. It was a beautiful day, she couldn’t help but want to be outside in the sunshine.
There was a can of coke sitting beside her, fresh from the machine, still cold with condensation creating a ring on the wood of the bench. She’d almost forgotten about it in the amazingness that was her peanut butter and honey sandwich.
Soon a ‘72 blue Ford pickup pulled up into the service driveway at the shop. It was being driven by a cheerful blonde wearing a blue tanktop and jeans. She had the windows down and the radio on and looked as happy as the music playing from her radio.
Tink looked up at the sound of the Ford, and broke into a grin at the sight of the girl. She set the wrapper from her sandwich aside, then climbed up, dusting her hands off on her cover-alls. This was definitely her kind of truck. They didn’t make ‘em like this anymore.
She pulled her soda can up and put it in her pocket on her way over to meet the driver, giving a grin and a wave.
“Hi!” Navi beamed as she bounced out of the car. “Nothing too exciting for this one, just an oil change, but I wanted to bring her by before I forgot.” She was obviously pregnant to anyone who knew about such things.
Yay bouncing! Tink liked Navi already! “Oooh, she’s a beautiful, old girl.” She said, running her hand along the hood. Of course, poor Tink didn’t know anything about such things. If she’d even noticed, she’d be too shy to ask. A woman would have to wear a “BABY ON BOARD” t-shirt for Tink to feel confident assuming. “...just the oil change? No sweat~! Let me get your paperwork started.” She added, then motioned for the woman to follow after her.
Smiling, Navi walked behind the other woman, grinning. “My grandpa owned her, he loved her first. I just keep her in shape.” She felt a flutter of something in her moving, but didn’t think it was the baby. Too soon for that, probably just gas.
“You’re doing a good job, so far as I can tell on the outside.” Tink still had to take a look under the hood. She was looking forward to it, actually, as she loved older cars. They were much more simple. No computer necessary to tune ‘em up. She led Navi into the office and pulled out out a clipboard with some standard sheet of info on it for Navi to fill out. “Does she see a lot of action? Your truck?”
“I use her for deliveries still, but just within a ten mile radius of my nursery. But anything longer than that, I’ve got a different truck I use.” She liked to make sure that her grandpa’s truck was in perfect shape.
Tink nodded, leaning back against the desk. “That’s a good thing. Though, I’m sure a truck like that probably wants a nice, long ride every once in a while. You own the nursery, right? Plants?” Tink was almost as bad with plants as she was with animals.
“Yup! Plants, that’s me!” Navi wondered if she had a smudge of dirt or some sort of telltale sign somehow. “I try to take her out for a long drive at least once a month, but mostly she takes me to get groceries.”
Tink was near constantly covered in motor oil, so she had no room to judge. She paid attention, though, and thought she’d read this girl’s name on the network? Along with something about a nursery? ...or maybe it was a lucky guess! “That’s so cool. I wish I was better with plants. They all seem to wither and die when I try to work with them, though.” She admitted, then accepted the clipboard back and took notes on it.
“Just the oil change, then? I can have that done in about ten minutes if you want to wait in here.”
“You should try cacti! They’re kinda sassy, but they’re fun to work with too.” Navi smiled, beaming at the other girl. She just seemed sweet somehow, like a cousin that she’d never had. “Yup, just the oil change! Mind if I keep you company? It helps if I stand up.”
“Yeah?” Tink was fairly certain that she’d be able to over-water or under-water even a cactus. But the other girl seemed so supportive, it was hard not to think that she could do something like that. “Sure! You’re welcome to it. I’ll show you the right place to stand. Sometimes the floor’s a bit... slippery.” She added with a grin, then motioned for the other girl to follow her into the garage proper.
“Yup! Most of ‘em just once a year need a sip of water. I’ll grab one and show you how and everything.” Navi couldn’t help but laugh. “Oil does that! Or I could just fly.”
... it came out without her really thinking about it, and she clapped a hand over her mouth.
Tink paused, having heard her correctly. She turned to look at the woman and raised an eyebrow. “...fly?”
“Um. Yeah. You know how this place is weird? Well, uh. Some of us are too?” It was a weird explanation, but it would have to suffice.
“I’ve heard.” Tink hadn’t had her own dreams yet. She nodded, though, there were weird things going on all the time apart from the dreams. “...you can fly? REALLY?” She asked, lighting up like a Christmas tree.
“Well, yeah, I’m a fairy.” Navi shrugged her shoulders, letting her wings out and hovering above the ground.
“Holy..” Tink said, eyes wide as dinner plates, as she watched Navi unleash wings and hover. “...that’s just... oh my God.” There were no words. That was the most amazing thing ever.
“The dreams,” Navi blushed. That was a good way to explain, right?
“Wow.” Tink really wished she’d had some of those dreams now. It was unfair that people were getting these awesome powers and stuff, and she hadn’t had any of it. “...that’s so cool! Not gonna lie, I’m a bit jealous. I haven’t had any of those strange dreams, but they sound awesome!”
“Well, you’ve got lots of time, right? I’m sure you’re something awesome. Oh! what if you’re a Transformer!” Navi flailed a little, leaving glitter in her wake.
Tink blinked at the glitter. She had glitter too?? Now Tink was insanely jealous. “Oh my god. I don’t want to be a transformer, I want to be a glittery fairy!” ...spoilers?
“Maybe you’ll be a glitter fairy Transformer!” Navi’s jaw dropped. “Okay, that would be the best thing EVER.”
Tink laughed like a mad woman. She nodded emphatically. “That would be the best thing ever. Now whatever I dream is going to be disappointing.” She grabbed the keys and moved the truck into the garage with ease and skill after showing Navi where to sit safely.
Navi plopped down, crossed her legs underneath herself, and got ready to watch. She tended to absorb things like a sponge, especially things she was interested in. She wanted to learn enough to possibly do her own oil changes.
Tink wouldn’t like that! Then she wouldn’t get to see Navi as often! She wanted to learn more about the fairy stuff. She took her time as she did the oil change, enjoying the old truck. It was a great car. They didn’t make ‘em like this anymore. About ten minutes later, and Tink was finished. She came around, wiping her hands on a towel. “She’s a beautiful truck, that’s for sure!”
“I’m sure Grampa is glad to hear it.” Navi smiled; she was the sort of person who thought her dead ancestors were always with her, always around her. “You know, I like you. We should go to lunch sometime!”
“Really? Lunch? I’d love that!” Tink said, giving the other girl a bright smile. “I always need more friends around. Ooh, do you like Thai?” She asked, turning to lead Navi into the office. The oil change was ridiculously cheap at Tink’s shop.
Navi nodded hard. “Ohhh, yes. This little one is going to come out loving chili peppers just like its momma.” Navi grinned, fluttering happily. “Let me give you my card, my cell number’s on it!” She fished one out of her purse, smiling.
Ohhhh, so she IS pregnant! Tink was on the fence about saying something. Sometimes people were just... pudgy. She didn’t want to make that mistake! “Thanks!” She said, accepting the card. “I’m going to call you. Maybe Friday for lunch? I know a fantastic place.”
“That sounds perfect. I’ll eat all the Thai and make the husband jealous. ... and bring him home some because I’m nice.” Navi fluttered a little in the air, unable to help it when she was particularly gleeful.
Tink laughed, and her eyes went wide when Navi flew again. “I’m so jealous!” She said, grinning. That was so cool. “You know how many tools I could reach with ease if I could only fly??” There were tools all along the shop wall, and the thing must’ve been 15 feet high.
“That’s true!” Navi’s eyes went wide. “You should hire someone who can fly! I’m sure someone else here can.”
“I’ll start looking! I mean, it’s not my shop, I just work here.” Tink said, smiling bashfully. “But I’ll suggest it to my boss! Maybe we can find someone together!” Damn, she wished she could fly.
“If I see anyone that can fly and can work on cars, I’ll make sure they come see you.” Navi couldn’t help but smile. “I’m so glad I met you, I love friends!”
Tink gave a laugh. “Definitely send them my way!” She nodded. “Me, too! Thanks for coming in! Everything’s set.” She said, holding out the paperwork and keys to Navi. “She’s a beautiful truck. I’ll take good care of her whenever you bring her in.”
“I know you will,” Navi smiled. “I’m looking forward to Friday.” She took her keys and waved as she bounced to her car.
“Bye!” Tink said, grinning and waving. Then she popped back into her office to finish up some paperwork.
