Cass was just a tad bit depressed over the fact that she still had at least six weeks until her collarbone was healed and she could stop wearing the sling, but she tried to not show it around Jubilee and Laura. She knew that her friends wouldn’t fault her for feeling that way, but she wanted their place to be a happy one and didn’t want to bring them down. Both Jubilee and Laura had, had their own bad things happen to them recently and Cass thought that they all deserved to be happy. Then again, meeting Gavroche had helped her mood a little. He was extremely nice, but wasn’t sure if he liked her or not. Either way, after what had happened with Logan and the fact that she’d never had a boyfriend before, she didn’t want to rush into anything with anyone, so being friends with Gavroche was just fine with her at the moment.
Deciding that she needed to get out for a little while, Cass decided to take Ginger for a walk. It had been difficult at first, taking the dog for a walk and picking up after him with only one hand, but she liked the puppy’s company and it appeared as if he had actually learned to be patient with her instead of trying to pull her alone, which helped. After walking through the park closest to the condo, Cass decided to walk down along the path above the beach.
Barbara had been to a morning meeting that ran on far longer than she had wanted it to, why was it whenever she wanted to get away the board members decided they needed to talk as much as a gaggle of gossiping women. Still it was over now and as she had needed to cancel her next meeting she was now in no rush to return home.
She had grabbed a bagel and coffee and after finishing her food decided a walk along the beach path would be nice while she finished her drink. She was so absorbed in watching the water and getting lost in her thoughts that she didn’t notice the young girl and her dog until the dog darted around her feet almost tangling her in it’s lead.
As patient as Ginger had become with Cass, he was still a puppy and wanted to run around, so Cass would let out a bit more of the retractable leash to allow him to run ahead. Of course, this time, letting him run ahead meant that he had gotten excited at the presence of someone new and decided to check her out. “I’m so sorry. Ginger! Stop that.” The puppy looked up at her then at the red headed woman and tried untangling himself, but only managed to tangle himself up more. “You are completely hopeless.”
Barbara laughed as the dog tried his best to extract himself only to get more confused, bending down she stroked the dog, “There’s no harm done, is there?” she replied, “You just wanted to say Hello, I’m sure” she smiled before looking up at the dogs owner.
“He’s just easily excitable.” Cass said as she stooped down, set the end of the leash on the ground and began to try and untangle him from around the woman’s legs as he sniffed and licked at the woman’s hand. “And trying to keep him from doing things like this with only one good arm is a little difficult.” Cass had forgotten to wear sunglasses this morning, so if the woman was familiar with the Women’s Olympic Gymnastics team at all then she might recognize Cass.
Like most people around that time Barbara had, of course, watched the Olympics and, thanks to her photographic memory, knew who Cassandra was as soon as she looked at her properly. “Let me do that” she offered placing her hand on Cassandra’s arm briefly before untangling the dog and his lead. “I hope your arm is healing well” Barbara said with a kind smile.
Cass got to her feet as the other woman untangled Ginger’s leash and she picked up the end, pressing the button to retract much of it once the dog was free, “It’s healing slowly, but it’s healing.” She had a feeling that the woman had recognized her, but she didn’t really mind. “I’ve got about six more weeks with the sling.”
Barbara nodded, “You’re lucky, it was a nasty fall” she said before adding quickly, “I’m sorry I should have said I recognised you. That was terribly rude of me” she apologised, “I’m Barbara” she introduced herself.
Cass switched the handle of the leash to her slinged hand for a moment to run her hand through her hair then took it in her good hand again, “Yeah, it wasn’t fun.” So far Barbara was the first person she’d spoken to about the fall who didn’t know the reason behind what had happened. “And that’s okay. I had a feeling you had. It’s nice to meet you Barbara. I’m sorry about for Ginger.”
“Oh don’t worry about that, he’s adorable” she said scratching the dog behind the ears.
“Are you going to continue to compete once you’re fully healed?” Barbara asked interestedly, the young girl had a lot of talent and she thought it would be a shame if her accident had put her off.
And there was the question that Cass was trying to figure out the answer to herself, “I’m not sure actually. At my age, most gymnasts are retiring. I mean, you don’t see many gymnasts competing in the Olympics in their twenties.” Not to mention, Jubilee wouldn’t be competing anymore and one of the things that had made the Olympics fun was getting to compete alongside her friend. “I was thinking about maybe coaching, but we’ll see what happens when I’m healed.”
“I don’t know much about the sport but you seem quite talented” Barbara said, “If coaching is the path you take I believe a lot of up and coming athletes would be very lucky”
Cass couldn’t help but smile at the compliment, “Thanks. I’m trying to figure out exactly what I’m going to do, but the more I think about it, coaching seems like something I wouldn’t mind doing.” She’d still get to do gymnastics and she could potentially train the next wave of Olympic medal winners.
Barbara nodded, “I hope you have the support you need to help you decide” she said, she’d heard too many stories of athletes being left to fend for themselves at the mere mention of not continuing in their chosen sport.
“I’ve got a coach and some really good friends who I know would help me.” Compared to a few months earlier, Cass was lucky to have the support system around her that she did. She had hardly spoken to either of her parents since the court hearing, but she certainly wouldn’t be running to them with whatever news she decided on. “I’ve just got to finish healing up first.”
“Thats good” she nodded, glad to hear that Cassandra wasn’t alone. She’d seen the news, obviously, and knew about her parents so she was happy that she had friends around her. “But yes, healing first is definitely most important”
Cass smiled and Ginger started pulling at the lead, “I should probably get going. He’s getting antsy. It was nice to meet you, Barbara.”
“Of course” Barbara smiled, “It was lovely to meet you too. I hope you continue to heal quickly” she said before allowing the young woman to continue about her business.
“Thanks. I hope so too,” Part of Cass was glad that Ginger had gotten tangled around the woman’s legs, because she really did enjoy talking to new people and the more people asked her about what she planned to do once she was healed, the easier it got to figure out.
