Cadence showed up at Kurt’s front door after class and knocked. She didn’t have work, volunteering, school or any social obligations the following day, so she was planning on staying the night at his place. Whatever that meant.
She rang the bell, shifting her backpack on her shoulder. She wasn’t dressed normally for her today. She was in tight jeans and a baggy sweatshirt, and her hair was up in a sloppy ponytail. She didn’t exactly look like she was ready for a romantic overnight, but she was looking forward to cuddling up with her boyfriend and watching a swashbuckling movie.
That was the last thing Kurt had wanted, or needed. For the past two days he’d holed up in his crappy little apartment, not seeing anyone, not checking the net. Just holed up.
Because he’d woken up, blue, fuzzy and with glowing yellow eyes. The tail was useful, though.
It was strange that he hasn't come to the door. Cadence worried maybe he wasn't home. She drew out her phone and dialed his number, standing there on the front step.
Kurt started at his phone, grimacing when he saw it was Cadence. He answered. “Ja?” He could do that much, maybe he could pretend he wasn’t actually home. He hid in his bedroom.
“Hey,” Cadence brightened at the sound of his voice. It was obvious in her tone that just speaking with him made her happy. She turned around, putting her back to the door. “Are you home? I’m on your porch.”
“I’m...not feeling that well.” He couldn’t outright lie to her, damn it. And he’d have to show his face to her some day. “Come in, I’m in the bedroom, liebchen.” With the lights off and the curtains closed.
Cadence tried the handle, and found it unlocked. She pushed her way into the house and set her bag down on the sofa, then headed into the bedroom. “Why are all the lights off?” It made the place look like a dark cave.
Kurt wasn't happy with what his dreams had turned him into. He didn't think they were entirely done with yet. The last thing he remembered was going with Rogue to get Hope back to Utopia. He didn't know how that would turn out, yet.
Sighing, he turned on the light. If a sixteen year old girl wasn't frightened of him, he thought there might be hope for his girlfriend.
Cadence blinked at the sudden brightness, then gasped at the sight of Kurt. He looked... well, he looked like a monster. It was such a shock, she wasn’t sure how to handle it. “...what...??”
His tail lashed behind him, and he grabbed it, wringing it a little in his hands in a nervous gesture. “This is who I am, Cadence. In my dreams. I voke up like this two nights ago.”
“...How?” Cadence still couldn’t wrap her brain around it. What had done this to him? He’d mentioned dreaming about being different, but this was... If only she’d had some of those dreams she might have understood a bit better. “...No.” She said, shaking her head. “I don’t understand, I don’t...” This was too much for her. Too strange, too confusing. She was scared.
His face fell, the yellow in his eyes glowing dimmer. His tail threatened to lash and he held it tighter. He was wearing socks on his hands, to spare her the extra shock of only three digits on each hand. “Liebchen....Cadence. I’m still me. I’m just blue and fuzzy.” His ears almost drooped.
She saw a flash of his teeth, sharper than before. And those ears that almost drooped were so pointy. He was holding... a tail? A pointed tail? Cadence’s heart was thundering in her throat. What if this was her fault? What if this was God’s work? Some sort of revenge? Payment for her sins? No. No, there was too much to think about, too much to worry about, too much to consider. “I can’t.” She said, shaking her head. “I just... I can’t.” She took a step backward toward the door.
Kurt felt his heart start to break. “Cadence... please, don’t do this. Ve should talk...!” He took a step towards her.
“I’m so sorry, Kurt.” She said, then turned around to walk back into the living room. Her heart was thundering, her mind was foggy. She was scared and confused and being incredibly selfish. He must have been even more scared and confused than she was, and she was being a terrible girlfriend for wanting to flee.
He appeared in front of her, with an audible bamf. “Please, don’t go!” The smell of sulfur and brimstone wafted around him as trails of purple smoke drifted away.
Cadence nearly shrieked when Kurt bamf’d in front of her. She felt her body give a jolt of surprise. “You... God, how do you do that??” She said, sounding frustrated in her fear and confusion.
“I’m a mutant! Cadence, It’s just how I am. I vas born this vay!” He grabbed her shoulders, the socks falling off to show the state of his fingers.
Another gasp escaped her at the sight of his hands. She pulled back and away, taking a couple of steps backward and bumping into the open door to his bedroom. “...you’re... Kurt, you’re not a mutant... you’re human... you were... what happened to...??” She couldn’t even say it. It looked like he was wearing a freaky costume. Incredibly good make-up, but freaky nonetheless.
He tugged at his blue hair. “I don’t know! I voke up like this. I can’t..the fur is attached to me, the tail...” It wrapped around the back of a chair in his agitation.
Cadence glanced beyond him to the door and back again. She was trying to figure out how to get out now. She wanted to leave, to go out and clear her head. Some cool, night air would help. Should help. She didn’t know how it was possible for him to change this much. And if his outsides changed this much... what about his insides?
“...you look...” She hated to say it. She didn’t really mean it, but the words came out before she could stop them. “...you look evil.”
Kurt stared at her. The words felt like a shot through the heart. His eyes became shadowed, and he stepped away from the door. His tail opened it and pushed it open for her. Kurt’s voice was hard. “You vant to leave? Get out. I’ll keep my evil avay from you.”
Oh, God. That wasn’t what she wanted to say. It wasn’t what she meant. It was an awful, horrible, terrible thing to say. She didn’t mean it. She didn’t know how to make this better. She shifted her weight from one hip to the other. “I’m sorry, Kurt.” She said, shaking her head. But she reached for her bag and pulled it onto her shoulder hastily. She wanted to get out. “I’m really sorry.” She added, and moved toward the door.
She was still here, and he couldn't look at her. It was too familiar an emotion from his dreams. To be looked at in fear, and disgust.
“Go!” Kurt practically shouted, the glow in his eyes all but burning and his teeth glinting in his open mouth.
Cadence ran out the door.
