Who: Arya and Margaery
When: Wednesday 13 March
Where: Coffee shop
What: A meeting and a discovery
Rating: Low?
Status: Complete
Margaery had been needing caffeine all day and as she stood in line she contemplated the menu trying to decide exactly what she was in the mood for. It hadn’t been a particularly hard day but she always felt tired on a Wednesday, it was full of language classes which always caused her Swedish accent to return a little more than normal.
Deciding she’d have a mocha, she needed that hit of sweetness from the chocolate, she realised the woman in front of her was having trouble. It looked like their card machine had packed in and she was struggling to find change.
Stepping forward Margaery smiling, “Here let me” she said, handing over the cash and placing her own order before looking back at the other woman, “If you’re anything like me you really need that today”
Arya didn’t drink coffee very much, she preferred energy drinks, but today had been long and she’d had practice after school and if she was going to get through her homework, she needed some coffee. Of course it would have been better if she’d already had her money out, but she hadn’t realized that all of her change had fallen out of the inside pocket of her messenger bag and had, had to search through the bottom, past her books for the right change.
When the girl behind her spoke up, she turned, brows raised slightly, because the last thing she’d expected was for someone to offer her change, “Thanks. I would have found my change eventually, but thanks.”
Margaery smiled, “Oh don’t worry about it” she told her, “It’s just coffee after all”
“But I’m a complete stranger,” Arya said taking her coffee when the barista handed it over, “Most people are too afraid to help strangers these days, because they don’t know whether or not the stranger is going to get mad at them for helping.” Arya smirked and took a sip out of the plastic top on the cup.
"I didn't even consider that possibility" Margaery admitted, "I just wanted to help. Are you going to get mad at me?" She asked with a soft smile.
Arya pretended to have to think about it for a moment before shaking her head, “No, I don’t think I will. I mean, I got my coffee, so I’m good.” She smirked and held up the cup before taking another sip. The taste was awful, because she didn’t drink it enough to figure out exactly what she liked, but it was a necessity right now, “Thanks, by the way.”
Margaery laughed, “Thank you” she replied, “I’m very glad not to have offended you” she grinned. “You’re more than welcome”
Arya shrugged, “I’m not really easily offended.” That is, unless you were the close minded head cheerleader at her school. Of course in that case, Arya had just punched her. “I’m Arya Stark, by the way. Figure you should at least know who you helped out.”
“Margaery Tyrell” she replied as she held out her hand to the other woman, “Stark, you say? You aren’t related to Jon are you? Jon Snow?”
Arya recognized the name right away as the girl who Jon had mentioned giving a Monty Python Tutorial to recently. “Yeah, Jon is my brother.” Arya said, shaking Margaery’s hand, “He mentioned you recently actually.” It was nice to actually put a face to a name now, so that when Jon talked about the other woman in the future, she’d know exactly who he was talking about.
“Oh really?” Margaery replied smiling, she was glad she had finally met Arya. Jon had told her about his sister a number of times and she knew he was extremely fond of her. “Nothing bad I hope”
Arya shook her head, “No, nothing bad. He said that he had just been giving you an education in Monty Python. How had you never seen them before?” It still boggled her mind how someone could have not seen Monty Python, “And more importantly, what did you think?” She raised her brows expectantly, waiting for Margaery’s opinion.
Margaery laughed lightly, “Oh, well unless they are the big blockbusters most films in Sweden are dubbed which I cannot stand, and it is especially hard with comedy because so much relies on the language” she explained to Arya.
“Jon had to explain a couple of things but I found I enjoyed them a lot” she smiled, “The Holy Grail was the most fun and easiest to understand”
“Holy Grail is my favorite.” Arya said, taking another sip of her coffee then realized that they were more or less just standing to the side of the counter, “We should sit down before we start to annoy everyone in line. That is, if you want to gossip about Jon.” Arya usually wasn’t one for gossip, but when it came to talking about her brothers, well then she didn’t mind it.
At Arya’s words she realised they were indeed standing in the way, “Oh yes, that would be lovely” she answered, “As long as I am not holding you up from anything” she added, aware that Arya may not have been planning on staying in the coffee shop once she had her order.
“Nah. All I’d be doing if I was at home is homework.” She might have had a lot of homework, but it could wait a little while. She was interested in talking to Jon’s friend and finding out a little more about her, aside from what Jon had already told her. “There’s a table over there.” She pointed to one near the windows and headed towards it.
“Oh I know that feeling” Margaery agreed with a smile, she had her own fair share of coursework for her university course waiting for her too. But for now she wanted to talk to Jon’s sister. So she followed her to the table and waited for Arya to sit before she did the same. “Are you going on to University?” she asked Arya interestedly as the other girl had mentioned homework already.
Arya shrugged at the question about school, "Don't know what I wanna do. I mean, I've pretty much got a scholarship no matter what cause of sports, but I'm only eighteen. How am I supposed to choose now what I want to do with the rest of my life?" She toyed with the bottom of the cup as she spoke, "What're you going for?"
“I don’t think that is unusual” Margaery told her, “There are many people who have no idea what they wish to be, even when they are older than eighteen”
She smiled, “I am studying Law and Languages” she told Arya, “I sat in on a number of classes before I chose, I was not supposed to but the teachers didn’t notice” she admitted.
Arya nodded, “Law would be too boring for me. My mother isn’t too happy that I want to take a year off and I know Jon will probably try and help me figure out what to study, but I just don’t want to choose something now and then in twenty years wake up and decide that I don’t want to do it anymore and start all over again.” She shrugged, “I like playing sports, but I don’t think I want to do that professionally.” She didn’t mention the part where she assumed that even if she did play professionally, Sansa was already famous for Black Widow and no matter what she did, that would probably overshadow whatever she chose to do.
Not really wanting to talk about school any longer, Arya decided to change the subject, “So, how did you meet Jon?” Her brother had talked about Margaery a few times, but he’d never gone into detail about how they’d met.
Margaery let Arya change the subject, she obviously didn’t want to continue the discussion around schooling. And as she was so undecided Margaery couldn’t really blame her for that.
She smiled at the memory, “On a mountain in Switzerland” Margaery told her, “I was on a skiing holiday and none of the people I was with would dare to ski the biggest slope and you weren’t allowed to do it alone. So Jon became my knight in shining armor, or at least my knight on shining skis” she grinned.
Arya laughed a little, a smirk crossing her lips, “Leave it to Jon to rescue the damsels in distress.” Of course he didn’t do it, because he was interested in them, but more because he was just a genuinely nice guy who wanted to help everyone. Any other guy would have offered to pair up with Margaery, because he wanted to get into her pants, but not Jon. Although, she was sure that those girls tried to get into his, much to their disappointment in the end.
“He does it very well” Margaery nodded, knowing very well now what she hadn’t known at the time. But still they had luckily managed to get over that little stumble and were now happily best friends. It was much better that way for everybody. “And of course after skiing a black diamond of a slope we were destined to become friends”
“And what luck you both wound up in California.” Arya was pretty sure that was an extreme coincidence and she was curious what exactly had brought the other woman to America, “How did you wind up coming to America, anyway? Surely not just because there was a chance that Jon might come out here at some point.” Jon used to come out at least once a year, but this had been the first time he’d come back since she had gone to visit him in 2011.
That had been almost four years ago, they’d seen each other numerous times since - mostly in Europe and had been in constant email correspondence. Margaery laughed, “Not at all” she replied, “As charming as Jon is. My brother lives here so when I...disagreed with my parents choices for my life I left and this seemed to be the obvious choice when thinking about where to settle”
“What’s your brother do?” Arya asked, curious as to what her brother had been doing in California already, “Do you live with him?” To say that Arya was nosey was an extreme understatement.
Margaery smiled, when it came to her brother she would proudly talk about him at length, "Loras is a professional kickboxer" she informed Arya, "I currently live with him and his housemate Obi-Wan"
The name sounded familiar and it took her a moment before she realized where she had heard it before, “That wretched Skeeter woman wrote about him a couple months ago, didn’t she?” If she recalled, there had been a picture of Margaery’s brother kissing another guy.
She nodded, her lips thinning slightly as she thought of the horrid woman. “She did” Margaery confirmed, “I can only hope the woman gets what’s coming to her soon” she added before smiling at Arya, “Still, Loras is happy now and that’s all I truly care about”
“Tell me about it. She wrote about my sister a few months ago and then one of my friends last week. She needs to get a life.” Arya made a face at the thought of Rita Skeeter, “That’s good that he’s happy though. Does that mean he’s happy with someone?” Again, Arya was nosey and she was curious as to whether or not the picture meant that Margaery’s brother was like Jon.
“I spoke to my lawyers but she’s very well protected” Margaery confided, and it had been incredibly irritating that she couldn’t touch the woman who had dared to try and hurt her brother. Margaery’s protective streak was rather fierce when it came to Loras. She smiled at Arya’s question but didn’t mind answering with a nod, “He is” she confirmed, “The same man from his dreams actually” she added with a fond smile.
“Really? That’s kind of awesome.” Part of her wished that Jon could find someone to be happy with. “So, they were together in his dreams too?” She couldn’t help but wonder if Jon had been gay in her dreams too. There hadn’t been anything to indicate it, but she’d only have three dreams about her family, so it was possible.
Margaery nodded, “Yes, mostly” she replied, there really wasn’t a way to explain that Renly had been her husband and her brothers lover without sounded a little strange so she simply avoided it. “They’re very lucky to have found each other here”
“That’s pretty awesome.” Arya now wondered just how many people who shared dream worlds actually knew one another in the waking world. Aside from Bran, Sansa and Gendry, she didn’t know anyone else who was having the same sort of dreams. Her train of thought was actually somewhat ironic since the dreams of the woman across from her also took place in the same dream world. Her dreams were at a point where she only vaguely recognized certain names and at the moment Tyrell was only familiar because of Rita Skeeter, because she hadn’t connected the dots between Margaery’s brother and The Knight of Flowers. “My siblings are in my dreams too. Including my older brother who died as baby here.” That was the worst part of the dreams right now. Robb being there, but not here.
“Really?” Margaery asked, “How interesting. You know I’ve met your sister, Sansa, in mine. Your mother too. I wondered if you and your siblings would dream of the same world” she revealed. Margaery’s dreams were fragmented, things didn’t seem to be coming in any particular order. But she knew she definitely had not met Arya, it made her wonder where the younger Stark girl had been.
Arya’s brows rose as Margaery mentioned knowing Sansa and their mother in the dreams, “Guess I can add you to the list of people who share by dreams. I assume that your brother and his boyfriend have the same dreams then?” She asked, wondering where Margaery had met her mother and sister in the dreams and if the reason she hadn’t been with them had anything to do with when and where she met Gendry in the dreams. She still didn’t understand what was going on there, but she was sure she’d find out eventually.
“I guess so” Margaery nodded, “Yes they both share the dreams. Loras Tyrell and Renly Baratheon. I’ve had a number of dreams but not many involving anybody other than Loras and Renly” she added, “And they don’t seem to be in any order so it can be very confusing” And she didn’t like telling others things before they had experienced the dreams themselves. Like with Renly, she was still looking forward in some strange way to him dreaming their marriage. He would be fun to tease.
“Baratheon? Is he related to Robert Baratheon? My father is friends with a Robert Baratheon back in England.” Arya said, taking a sip from her coffee then shaking the cup to figure out how much was left in the cup.
Margaery nodded, “Renly is Robert’s younger brother” she explained as she finished her own drink, “There and here” she added.
Arya nodded, “I didn’t know Robert had any brothers. He and my father have been friends for a really long time. That’s about all I know, really.” Reaching into the pocket of her bag, Arya pulled out her phone to check the time and sighed, “I should probably get going. As much as I’d rather stay here, I do have homework I need to get done.”
Arya’s words caused Margaery to check her own watch, “Oh yes, I guess I should be going too” she said with a rueful smile, “I’m really glad I finally got to meet you though”
“I’m glad I got to meet you too. I’m sure Jon won’t be though.” Arya smirked and got up from her seat then tossed her now empty cup, “Two against one is always more fun.”
“It is simply his destiny to be surrounded by smart, brilliant women” Margaery winked, “I’m sure he will give as good as he gets”
Arya nodded, laughing, “I’m sure he will. And I’m sure I’ll see you around again sometime.” She adjusted her bag on her shoulder and it wasn’t until they reached the door that Arya waved at Margaery, “Have a good night, Margaery.”
“You too Arya” Margaery smiled at the younger woman, “See you soon” she added as she waved her goodbye.
