Verity and Thor had texted earlier in the day. She was exhausted, sore, and blaming her damn mattress for it. Bad night’s sleep every night. She was feeling nauseous, too, though that probably came from the lack of sleep and too much coffee.
Anyway, the texts. Ver wanted to check in with Thor, make sure he was okay, She hadn’t heard from him in a while. He was one of her best friends now, and she felt terrible that she hadn’t been better in touch. She’d invited him over, as she didn’t feel like going out.
Thor arrived at her place, a little worried for his friend. She seemed less than happy right now. He just wanted to help her, to make her life a better one. He hoped he could. He knocked, hopeful, and smiling a little, a roast chicken in a bag in one hand, and a bottle of white light wine in the other. And he hoped all would be well.
Verity climbed up from where she’d been cuddled under a blanket on her sofa to answer the door. She was hungry, but every time she thought about food she felt absolutely nauseous. It was horrible. She had ginger ale and crackers, though, and was surviving on that for now. She pulled open the door and broke into a very tired grin at the sight of him.
“Hey, Thor.” She said, then reached forward to wrap her arms around him in a tight hug.
“Hello, Verity!” Thor hugged her close, and it hit him like a tidal wave, a sheer and powerful feeling and he burst into a smile as he lifted her with a whoop! “Congratulations!” he set her down gently. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
A little laugh escaped her when he swooped her up and hugged her tight. She was beaming when he set her down, though she was confused as well. “Congratulations?” She asked. Maybe he had her confused with someone else? “What do you mean? What didn’t I tell you?”
Thor blinked, then chuckled. “You don’t know. Oh dear. Verity... you’re pregnant!” He smiled softly at her. “And more than a little.” He gently touched her belly, and his eyes closed, then he nodded. “Some seven weeks, I do think.”
Verity blinked at him, then when his hand touched her stomach, she gave a laugh. She was convinced this was a joke. She couldn’t possibly be pregnant. “Ha ha, very funny.” She said, shaking her head and grinning a tired grin at him. “Did Oliver tell you about our deal?”
Thor shook his head, one eyebrow raised. “Verity... you’re pregnant, for real. And I have no idea about any deal.” He gently brushed her face with one finger. “I would not lie to you.”
Verity’s laugh fell short. “...You’re confusing me with someone else, then, Thor. I haven’t...” She cleared her throat. “I haven’t had sex with anyone. Not since...” Not since their night together in November. “...especially not seven weeks ago.”
Thor raised an eyebrow. “Are you very sure?” Now he was concerned. “May I check? In this, and this alone... I could bring forth the memory, if it exists, clouded somehow.” He was worried, and more than worried.
"Thor, you're starting to scare me now." Verity turned to lead the way into her apartment, leaving him to close the door behind himself. "Oliver has been injured since Christmas eve. I've been with him this whole time. No sex. Doctor's orders." But he started to put the pieces together for her. Sore body, sore breasts, tired all the time, nauseous, missing period.... She stopped, staring blankly at her fireplace. "Oh shit."
He closed the door, then followed her. “There is a possibility that just occurred to me. Something... wild. What do you dream of?” He spoke softly as he gently hugged her from behind.
"Dream? I dream about Hogwarts." She said, assuming he meant the Dreams and not her ordinary ones. But she gave a soft gasp. "I had. .. I had one that was. .. explicit." It simply couldn't be.
“Explicit sex?” His voice was soft. “Who with?” Not that it was his business, but it seemed a logical question. He helped her to a seat, one arm around her, and watched her, concerned.
"Oliver." Verity said. It’d been the most amazing and most terrifying dream of her life. “It was with Oliver. We were married, trying to have a baby. And we used magic to help us conceive.” Oh, God, what if it’d been one of those dreams? Dreams with a capital D? What if she was pregnant from that dream??
“Magic... do you know the spell, even now? Do you remember it?” He nodded slowly, thinking the same thing as her. “I fear that the dreamworld has once more crossed with the real, my friend. For you are pregnant.” He gently stroked her back.
“This need not be a terrible thing.”
“I don’t remember.” Verity said, shaking her head. “The Healers did most of the magic. All we had to do was the baby-making part.” She said, giving a sheepish grin. “Which was fun, by the way. Something I’ve been looking forward to do with him in this world, but haven’t had the chance.”
The grin faded a bit. “...I’m not... if I was... If it’s true...” She swallowed, suddenly looking terrified. “What on Earth am I going to say to him?”
Thor listened as she spoke. “Tell him the truth, Verity. Surely he has dreamed by now?” He gently hugged her, hopeful. “And if needed, I’ll prove the dreams are true.” His voice was as hard as rock for a moment.
Verity shook her head, cuddling close against him for a moment. “No. What if he... he doesn’t believe me? I can’t tell him. He doesn’t believe it. Any of it. He doesn’t...” She shook her head again and closed her eyes. It was really starting to sink in. “...I really am pregnant, huh? That’s why I feel... the way I do.”
“Then we will find a way to convince him.” Thor nodded. “You are pregnant, and he has to know, verity.” He hugged her.
Verity was really torn. On the one hand, his explanation made sense with her symptoms. She felt just like she remembered Lizzy feeling when she was pregnant. Tired, sore, nauseous. And her breasts were more sensitive than she’d ever experienced. Her sense of smell was going crazy, and she was likely to fall asleep at any moment. She thought maybe she’d been fighting off a flu, but...
How was it possible? She sighed and leaned her head against his shoulder, feeling absolutely terrified. She loved Oliver more than she’d ever loved anyone--which was strange to her. They had only known each other a few months, and there were things that they hadn’t done yet. Things she wanted to, and she was fairly sure that he wanted to, too, but stuff kept getting in the way. Like terrible accidents and physical therapy.
Verity shook her head. “He’s never going to believe it. I’m not sure I even believe it.” She paused. “Will you go with me to the doctor?”
Thor nodded, hugging her. "Of course. I'll do anything I can to help." He spoke directly to her. "Somehow, we'll make this right. I promise you that." He'd find a way.
“Good. Thank you.” Verity cuddled in against him. He was like the older brother that she always wante--wait. She had an older brother. Her relationship with him wasn’t like this, though. Thor really was one of her best friends in the world.
He held her close and smiled softly. Verity was one of those he had somehow adopted, along with Tessa, Pansy, and Sada. His people. He just hoped he could help her. And he prayed they could make this right.
