What: Glinda brings her bestie soup (and songs)
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Glinda had decided to make a couple of different soups for Theo, spiced pumpkin and chicken noodle, she wasn’t anything special in the kitchen but soups and smoothies she could do. She adored her blender, it was by far the most used thing in her home.
Making her way to his place she wasn’t aware of anything different happening, she had sung in the shower and car but that was usual for her. She enjoyed singing when she was alone so she hadn’t noticed anything was different yet.
She arrived at his place and knocked on the door, waiting with a smile on her face to greet him.
Theo had spent most of the day trying to ignore his obnoxiously singing neighbours. At last, they seemed to either shut up or leave, and he was enjoying the quiet. He knew the knock on the door could only be one person, so he answered it with a tired smile of his own.
"My saviour," he joked. "Come in."
“Oh sweetheart you still don’t look yourself” she told him as she tugged him down to place the back of her hand on his forehead to feel his temperature, “Temp doesn’t feel as high though” she told him before releasing him to step into the house.
"By the time I can go back to work, it'll be Spring Break." He laughed a little, following her inside.
"Did you want anything?" Theo asked. "Tea? Coffee?"
“Tea would be great, but I can make it if you like” Glinda said, not wanting him to go to any special effort for her.
"I'm a bit ill, not a complete invalid." Theo laughed and turned on the kettle. "Make yourself at home."
“I know you aren’t” Glinda answered with a grin, before taking a seat to watch him make the tea. Before she realised what she was doing she was singing his movements ‘Filling up the kettle, getting out the cups, putting in the teabags and fetching the milk. All to make the tea. Okay so that was odd, she frowned.
Theo frowned, too, looking over at her with a slightly raised eyebrow.
"Please tell me you didn't just sing that."
“I think I did” she replied, interesting that even when she sang she kept her Oklahoma accent, “I have no idea where that came from, sorry” she smiled apologetically.
"Oh, it's fine. It sounded beautiful, at least." He looked amused and poured at their tea, bringing it over to the couch. "Here we go."
“Thanks” Glinda replied shaking off the odd moment, “So are you really feeling better or just putting on a brave face?” she asked him concerned.
"I really am. It's just an annoying cough left mostly, and sleep to catch up on. I've had more people want to nurse me back to health than I thought possible."
He just shrugged and smiled, sipping his tea.
"How are you? I'm glad to see you're all right after last week's weirdness."
“Oh really? Not gonna have to fight for my place as your bestie am I? ‘Cos I know how to fight dirty” she teased.
“I’m fine” she replied, “Weirdness I can deal with” she assured him. After all she was a witch who went to school with a green girl in her dreams.
"'Though she be but little, she is fierce.'?" he quoted, smiling. "Don't worry. Your spot is safe and secure."
Glinda laughed lightly, “Oh I like that” she told him, “Okay that’s good. I was beginning to worry you’d replaced me already”
"Not a chance," Theo said. "Who else would dress me, after all."
’Picking out an outfit, making sure it fits, ensuring you look awesome, for all your classroom kids’ she sang again, shaking her head and once again looking apologetic.
At least, he figured, when it came to Glinda the singing was cute.
"Maybe you're the one who's sick," Theo teased, reaching to feel her forehead. "Don't feel bad. From what I hear, the whole county is doing it."
“Really?” she asked, laughing lightly as he felt her forehead, “That makes me feel somewhat better. I take it you’ve not had any urges to sing?” she asked.
"Not at all. Thankfully. No one wants to hear me sing." He sat back and took a long sip of tea. "I'd rather listen to you than myself."
"I'm sure it can't be too pleasant listening to me sing about tea or clothes" she smiled, "I bet you're better than you think"
"Trust me. I'm not." Theo laughed and then coughed a bit, drinking more tea. "Thanks, by the way, for stopping by."
Glinda waved off the thanks, “Oh please, like I wouldnt wanna make sure you’re okay” she smiled at him, ”Lean on me, when you’re not strong, And I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on”
He gave her a look of raised eyebrows. “You just did that, huh?”
“That one was probably my fault, it jumped into my head and then I couldn’t stop it” she told him with a grin.
“I wonder how long this is going to last. At least singing isn’t, you know, life threatening. So there’s that.” Theo shrugged his shoulders a bit, and secretly hoped it would be a weird, twenty-four hour thing and not anything extended or prolonged.
Glinda nodded, “And it’s kinda fun” she said, not too bothered by the singing now she was getting used to it, “No idea how long it will last though, Wonderland was over pretty quickly though” she added.
“Fingers crossed. I’d rather it be done before I go back to work. I don’t need to show up in a lecture hall and have a hundred-something students breaking out into a show-stopping number about foreign legislation.” Though the thought was, for a brief second, pretty humorous.
“If that happens you have to call me or video it” she told him clapping her hands together, “Because I would love to see that”
"I promise if it happens I will film it for you. Cross my heart." Theo grinned her way. "I wonder if there'd be choreography, too."
“Oh I’m sure there would be” Glinda replied, “I did a little tap number in the kitchen this morning, though I didn’t realise it was anything unusual” she admitted.
He snorted, nearly choking on his tea. The best (or worst) part of it was that he could completely picture Glinda, tap dancing around her house on a daily basis.
“You’re really something else, you know,” he said. It was a compliment.
Glinda laughed, “I’m just me honey” she told him before sipping her own tea.
“And I’m pretty certain you’re the only You out there. At least that I’ve ever had the pleasure of coming across.” Theo flashed her an amused look. “So, tell me, what are you up to lately?”
She smiled and graciously inclined her head, “Thank you” she replied, before shrugging, “Oh the usual, shopping, partying, more shopping. That is pretty much all I do with my days”
“You left out the bit where you also dance around your kitchen in the mornings,” he added, being teasingly helpful. “That doesn’t seem like a bad life, though.”
“There is that too” she replied with a grin, “It’s pretty good, I just sometimes wish I did more. Like something important” she shrugged, it was silly really.
“Oh yeah?” Theo glanced over, interested. “And what would you do? I mean, what would you like to do? And more importantly, why don’t you just go ahead and do it,” he asked, laughing a little. “I’m sure there’s nothing stopping you.”
“That’s the problem, I don’t know what I want to do” she told him, shrugging a little helplessly.
“No? Not even a little bit?” He tilted his head a little. She seemed very purposeful to him, and her natural ability to help people seemed an obvious choice. “Surely there must be something.”
"I used to go read at the children's ward in the hospital" she admitted, it was something she hadn't told anybody. "They're so wonderful to be around" there was never any pressure to be more than who she was, and the most they wanted from her was a hug and a story.
That was sweet, he thought, and something he could picture her doing without any trouble. Theo gave her a smile.
“Why did you stop?”
"I think I was getting in the way of the doctors and nurses doing their jobs" or rather she had heard some of the nurses talking about her, rather nastily too.
“By helping children feel a little more comfortable with their situation? I’m sure that, if anything, you were helping. “ He gave her a sympathetic look. “I’m sorry, it sounds like you enjoyed it, is all. Have you ever considered teaching?”
Glinda smiled at him, though it wasn't her usual megawatt smile, "I'm not smart enough for college" she told him simply, "Maybe I should look into event planning or personal shopping, I could do that I'm sure" it wasn't important like she wanted but she knew she shouldn't aim too high, that led to disappointment.
“Says who?” Theo snorted a little before taking another drink of tea. “Trust me, I’ve met a lot of people in my life who shouldn’t be teachers or should never have done the college thing. I think you’d be fine. You’d be amazing with young ones, I can tell.”
“Practically anybody who knows me” Glinda replied with an easy smile, “I’m not known for my intelligence” she shrugged, like it wasn’t a big deal. “But thank you, it’s kind of nice to have someone in my corner”
“Just because you’re not known for it doesn’t mean you don’t have it. But I’ll stop harassing you. I promise.” He gave her shoulder a pat and bit back a yawn.
“And I shall stop keeping you from resting” she told him with a kind smile, “Bed with you. I’ll heat some of the soup before I go so you’ll only need to warm it through in the microwave” she added as she shooed him.
Theo laughed as he stood, giving a stretch. “Yes, mother,” he quipped. He did, however, pause on his way to bed to look back at her, amused. “Do I get a lullaby, too?” he teased.
“Be careful what you wish for” she replied her lips quirking in a smile even as the words to ‘Hushabye Mountain’ filled her head.
“It’s true. I shouldn’t be cheeky, should I.” He laughed again, dutifully making his way to bed.
Glinda rolled her eyes fondly before telling him to sleep well. She pottered about in the kitchen, washing up and making sure his soup would be all ready for a reheat while singing 'Hushabye Mountain' softly before slipping out of the front door.
