Elizabeth was going crazy it seemed. She was currently pacing in her office trying desperately to fight the urge to sing that had been threatening to take hold of her all day. It was ridiculous! She was a respected member of the community, worked on high profile issues for the UN and had two doctorates! Singing was not what someone with all that did, for heaven’s sake!
Without fail, she had had at least one student and lecture burst out into song in the past two days. At first she had dismissed it as a bit of March madness or something, but as she watched the posts on the Net she realised it was more systemic in the county.
She had managed to resist nearly all day by distracting herself with work, but she had, unfortunately come to the end of all her paperwork and started thinking about other things.
Her current predicament was caused by thinking about a certain ruggedly handsome doctor who she had yet to hear from.
’It’s no good, I have to ring Sam!’ she thought all but diving for her phone on her desk, some papers scattering on the floor in the wake of her haste. She dialled Sam’s numbers with clumsy fingers and held the device to her ear, pacing in front of her desk as she waited.
Sam was finding the whole singing thing somewhat bemusing although she was extremely grateful that she wasn’t being affected by it. Nobody needed to hear her sing. It would be some sort of crime against humanity.
Hearing her phone ring she checked the caller i.d. and answered cheerfully, “Hi Lizzie, what’s up?” she asked, as it was unusual for her best friend to be calling at this time.
“Hey Sam,” Elizabeth greeted, hearing her own voice waver like she were nervous. Which she was. No-one had ever heard her sing before, not really. Sam had come the closest, having heard her in the shower more than likely. “I uh...I need your help with something and I need you not to laugh at me, ok?”
"Of course. What's wrong?" Sam asked, hearing the nerves in her usually confident friends voice.
“I uh...I...” Elizabeth wasn’t really sure how to describe the feeling. “I just need you to listen for a minute,” she forced herself to stop pacing and leant back on her desk, clutching the edge of it with her free hand and turning her knuckles white. “I started thinking about Dr McCoy again and now I just want to randomly break out into song!” she told her friend in a rush, squeezing her eyes shut to try and brace herself for the ribbing that was sure to follow.
Sam bit her lip to stop the burst of laughter from emerging. "Right I see" she replied, "So you want to sing me a love song Lizzie?" she asked, unable to keep the amusement from her tone.
“Saaaam!” Elizabeth whined, pushing off from the desk and pressing her hand to her forehead in embarrassment. “I just...to stop me ringing him and making an utter fool of myself, just...listen to me? Please? I’m hoping that if I tell somebody it might take the edge off,” she explained, exasperated by her own...craziness.
"Okay, okay. I'm sorry" Sam placated, she had seen some of her students simply not able to stop themselves from singing so knew it must be pretty horrible though Lizzie must have even better self control than Sam had thought. "Go for it, sing your little heart out and I will listen"
Elizabeth sighed deeply and heard the pounding of her heart setting the rhythm.
”I threw a wish in the well,
Don’t ask me I’ll never tell,
I looked to you as it fell,
And now you’re in my way.
Trade my soul for a wish,
Pennies and dimes for a kiss,
I wasn’t looking for this
But now you’re in my way.
Your stare was holdin',
Ripped jeans, skin was showin'
Hot night, wind was blowin'
Where you think you're going, baby?
Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
It's hard to look right,
At you baby,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
And all the other boys,
Try to chase me,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
You took your time with the call,
I took no time with the fall
You gave me nothing at all,
But still, you're in my way
I beg, and borrow and steal
Have foresight and it's real
I didn't know I would feel it,
But it's in my way
Your stare was holdin',
Ripped jeans, skin was showin'
Hot night, wind was blowin'
Where you think you're going, baby?
Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
It's hard to look right,
At you baby,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
And all the other boys,
Try to chase me,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
Before you came into my life
I missed you so bad
I missed you so bad
I missed you so, so bad
Before you came into my life
I missed you so bad
And you should know that
I missed you so, so bad
It's hard to look right,
At you baby,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
And all the other boys,
Try to chase me,
But here's my number,
So call me, maybe?
Before you came into my life
I missed you so bad
I missed you so bad
I missed you so, so bad
Before you came into my life
I missed you so bad
And you should know that
So call me, maybe?”
Elizabeth found herself on the right side of her desk, having ‘danced’ there it seemed and collapsed in relief into her chair, still holding the phone to her ear. “I know, I know! It was awful, but I feel sooooo much better!”
Sam couldn't hold in her laughter once Lizzie had finished. "Oh dear, no wonder you were so desperate to get that song out" she teased, "I can't believe out of all the possibilities that it was that pop trash driving you mad. I'm glad you feel better now though" she added sincerely.
“I hadn’t even heard it until last week!” Elizabeth told her. “Last time I listen to local radio I can tell you that! Ugh! Well, it was a pain in the ass, but it’s done now!” she sighed in relief, rubbing her temples to try and fend off the headache she could feel building there. “Thank you for listening to my craziness, I don’t know what I would have done without you!”
"You're more than welcome" Sam told her, "I'm sure its in the best friend agreement somewhere" she added her tone showing her bemusement. "Just give me another call if you get anymore urges, unless its Bieber, you're on your own with that one"
“Fair enough,” Elizabeth chuckled. She couldn’t name any of his songs, but she had seen enough on the internet to know he was awful.
"I've got to get to a meeting" Sam told her sadly, "You gonna be okay now?" she checked.
“Yeah, I should be fine,” Elizabeth told her, sitting up and leaning on her desk. “Thanks again,” Elizabeth smiled into the phone. “See you at home for dinner?”
"No worries" Sam told her, "Yep, see you later" she said before ringing off wondering, with a smile, if her friend would sing about their dinner later on.
