Zach grinned as he sat on the bench, pulling Tessa along with him.He had wanted to get back into going on dates with her, and the zoo seemed like a good place to start. And so far, it had been fun. Getting to see animals of all kinds was interesting, and so what if they smelled and did odd things? He liked that, some. It reminded him of college, in a way.
But doing it with Tessa? That was a lot more fun. Even if people were leaping into song. Heck, he had done it a few times off and online this week. it was weird, but sort of fun, too.
“Mmm, how are you?” One arm was around her as they sat.
Tessa didn’t mind the random bursts of song. It was better than random bursts of gunfire, that was for sure. At least the zoo animals hadn’t started singing and dancing, otherwise she might have had to ask the nearest magic mirror if she was the Fairest of them All.
She smiled, and leaned against her boyfriend, resting her head on his shoulder. “I’m good,” she said, “I was just wondering, if there was ever a throwdown between Snow White and Sigrun, who would win. Silly, I know.”
Zach chuckled.
“Not a terrible thing. Might be fun to see.” He grinned at her. Maybe it wasn’t a bad thing at all. “I like being here with you. I like doing things with you and just letting this crazy life go by,” He smiled softly and hugged her.
“Mm, me too,” she murmured, kissing his cheek. She felt like she was getting better at slowing down and savoring the quiet moments. Well, mostly quiet anyway. But at least most of the singing was joyful.
“You know, every day, this is becoming... awesome. And I feel like sometimes we are moving fast, and other times slow, but I think we are moving just right. Our speed. Zach and Tessa speed.” He grinned. “The speed we need to be.
He hummed and poked her.
And suddenly words were there as he looked at her face.
“I'm sleeping
And right in the middle of a good dream
When all at once I wake up
From something that keeps knockin' at my brain.
Before I go insane
I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed
Screaming out the words I dread:
‘I think I love you!’”
He clapped his hand over his mouth, eyes wide.
Tessa felt her own face mirroring Zach’s expression, her throat working soundlessly for a moment as she tried to ask him if he really meant what he’d just sung. She had a feeling that she knew the answer, she just couldn’t quite find her voice. Or maybe she didn’t trust herself not to start singing as well.
So instead, she gently tugged his hand away from his mouth so that she could kiss him as speechless as she felt.
He kissed her, hard, passionately, and his arms, one newly out of a sling, slid around her, hugging her close. His kiss was sure, warm, and utterly without doubt. when he pulled back, he smiled softly. “I mean it.”
The words were soft, and he felt he needed to say them, anyway.
Tessa smiled, gazing into his eyes for a moment, and nodding. And then, nuzzling his cheek, she too began to sing.
”Boy, I hear you in my dreams
I feel your whisper across the sea
I keep you with me in my heart
You make it easier when life gets hard...
He smiled.
“Girl you are to me
All that a woman should be
And I dedicate my life to you
Always
A love like yours is rare
It must have been sent from up above
And I know you'll stay this way
For always.” He grinned at her, singing.
“Always...” Tessa rolled the word over her tongue, testing the weight and the flavor of it. “I like the sound of that.”
“And we both know
That our love will grow
And forever, it will be
You and me hey
Oh, you're like the sun
Chasing all the rain away
When you come around
You bring brighter days
You're the perfect one
For me, and you forever will be
And I will love you so
For always...”
He smirked and then kissed her. “I like it, too. Especially with you attached. I think I could get used to being attached to you for always.” He nodded. “I might already be there.”
“I know,” she murmured, not intending to quote Han Solo for once. She’d figured out a while ago that Zach was becoming attached to her. It had just taken her a little while to figure out how she felt. But now? “I think I’m okay with that.”
And music swelled from somewhere and Zach managed a laugh, before breaking into song once more.
“When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I'm not so blue
When you're close to me, I can feel your heart beat
I can hear you breathing in my ear
Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me, we've got a groovy kind of love
Any time you want to, you can turn me on to
Anything you want to, any time at all
When I kiss your lips, ooh I start to shiver
Can't control the quivering inside
Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me, we've got a groovy kind of love, oho
When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I'm not so blue
When I'm in your arms, nothing seems to matter
My whole world could shatter, I don't care
Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me, we've got a groovy kind of love
We've got a groovy kind of love, we've got a groovy kind of love
Oho, we've got a groovy kind of love...”
He grinned wider. “Okay, some of these songs are perfect...”
Tessa joined in with him on the chorus, smiling as he finished singing. She kissed him, and ran her fingers through his hair. She’d have to remember these songs, so they could play them back later. “You’re perfect,” she said, “Quirks and all. And I think I love you too.”
He blushed and smiled at her, and kissed her back. He sighed, softly, warmly, when she said those words. “You’re perfect to me, as well. And good.” he kissed her again. “It works best that way, I’m told.” He blushed bright red, then.
“But it does suddenly make me want to take you home. Now.”
She smiled, and held his hand, lacing their fingers together. “Then let’s go home, Zach,” she said, “Let’s go home.”
“Sounds like a plan to me.” He rose and kissed her, and led the way home.
Because, anywhere he was, where she was, was home now.
And that was how it was supposed to be, right?
Right.
