It went against Emma's instincts to reach out to another person and yet she did so with Jean. In spite of her rather loveless childhood, Emma knew how to comfort and with people that really mattered, she made the effort, breaking beyond her normal level of comfort to help. Gently, she placed her hand on Jean's shoulder.
"I think you're afraid that it's going to happen," Emma said, her tone still matter-of-fact, but her voice softer.
