Jane was lying back on her lounger on the roof, binoculars in hand as she tried to see the Comet Pan-STARRS in the dimming twilight sky. The cloud coverage wasn't too bad tonight and she had managed to spot it a little while ago just in time for a rather large cloud to move in front of it. She sighed heavily and sat up, putting her binoculars on the side table she had there and taking a long pull from her bottle of beer. As she did, she looked over to the other lounger, remembering when Thor had been sat there and they watched the asteroid pass Earth. She downed the remnants of her glass and put the glass back, pushing off the lounger and moving off to the edge of the roof.
She leant forward on the ledge and looked out over the city. It really was beautiful, despite the weird stuff that happened here. Currently, one of the weirdest things was that people were randomly breaking out into song. Now Jane was creative, she had done her fair share of performing as a child for her parents as well as painting, but she couldn't imagine breaking out into showtunes. One guy had randomly stood up in class yesterday and started singing to their tutor about how hot he thought she was. Poor guy had all but run out of the room with his face blushing beetroot red.
Jane shook herself out of the memory and turned her gaze to the river on her left. Smiling as the twilight reflected off it beautifully, she couldn't help but wish that Thor were here, stood beside her, discussing theories as they watched the emerging night sky and shared a meal together. A beautiful tune seemed to float on the breeze towards her and Jane could feel her heart swelling with something indefinable. Her mouth opened against her own volition and her voice rose from her throat to escape into the night. She couldn't stop herself, she didn't know how.
"On my own
Pretending he's beside me,
All alone
I walk with him till morning.
Without him
I feel his arms around me,
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me.
In the rain the pavement shines like silver.
All the lights are misty in the river.
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight,
And all I see is him and me forever and forever.
And I know it's only in my mind.
That I'm talking to myself and not to him.
And although I know that he is blind,
Still I say, there's a way for us
I love him,
But when the night is over
He is gone.
The river's just a river!
Without him,
The world around me changes,
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers!
I love him,
But every day I'm learning.
All my life
I've only been pretending.
Without me
His world will go on turning.
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known!
I love him,
I love him,
I love him,
But only on my own..."
Jane could feel herself shaking as she finished, her arms wrapped around herself as she stared out into the night. She felt a tear trickle down her cheek, the sensation breaking the spell that had seemingly come over her. She fiercely wiped it away as she turned back to the loungers. She cast her eyes skyward and saw nothing but clouds. Deciding to call it a night, Jane grabbed the glass and bottle of wine with a glare, 'That is the last time I drink red wine!'
