It was rare that Éponine allowed anyone near their flat, and for good reason. Their father was always a legitimate danger, and likely would be until they finally managed to move someplace better... how the bastard had figured out where she lived in the first place was beyond her.
This man, though... even though she’d only just really met him, something in him seemed good. If the worst came to worst (and she desperately hoped it wouldn’t), they’d likely be able to retain the upper hand... and she hated that she was thinking even remotely like that. Such was the curse of growing up like she and Gavroche had.
Really, now the only choice she had was to wait, and hope to whatever god there was that she wasn’t wrong.
Gavroche had been told someone was coming over, someone he might get along with well enough. And okay, sure, maybe. Either way, he was in his room with his headphones in and waited for her to call him if anything bad happened.
This one on the other hand, Scootaloo had actually used the last of his change to bring a pizza over with him! Just as a thank you for being so nice to me type thing. And to be seen as cool! And he’d get to eat too! He chuckled and knocked on the door after getting to her front area, confused as to where there was a ‘fake’ security camera in front. Maybe to deter more moronic people? “Hey! It’s me! Scootaloo!”
Éponine had her reasons! And she really, really wasn’t going to go into them, even if he tried to get her to... she unlocked the door and opened it, trying to ignore that small sense of relief that it was him.
That he’d brought a pizza was a little confusing to her, but hey, she wasn’t about to turn down what was essentially free food. “And you bring food too. I think you’re getting more and more amazing.”
“What you talkin ‘bout! I’m always awesome!” He commented, chuckling to himself before stepping in. The caution in her movements was a little off putting, but he reasoned there were legitimate motives behind the behaviour. “Cheese pizza! I haven’t eaten and well... Not good to come over completely empty handed!”
Completely legitimate motives. At least Gav’d be happy to have some company. “Just find yourself somewhere comfortable. I’ll go grab my brother so he doesn’t completely forget the rest of the world exists.”
“Ah, he’s that kind?” tipped his head but sat down, setting the pizza down in front of him in the ... Boxes? He figured they were for a makeshift coffee table or something. “So, What’s his name? Your brother?”
It was easier than getting something new, especially whilst they were looking for a new place. The sooner they got that dealt with, the better... Éponine knocked on the wall that separated the room they were in from Gavroche’s bedroom, a system they’d worked out whilst growing up - it was always easier than going in. “His name’s Gavroche. Don’t ask why we have French names when we’re not from a French family... we really don’t know either.”
Gavroche heard the knocking and set his iPod aside and stepped out. Seeing a new guy, around his age made him smile. “Hey!”
Scoot waved slight. “Hey, Gavroche. Can I call you Gav? I bet everyone else does!” He opened the pizza box. “Brought food!”
This was already off to a good start. Éponine couldn’t help but feel slightly relieved - one less thing she had to worry about. True, the list of things she did have to worry about was still massive, but... she could ignore that. For now.
“Yeah! You can. Sweet! Pizza!” Gavroche smiled and sat down beside him and took the pizza slice. “You’re not as bad as I thought you’d be.”
Scootaloo chuckled and looked Eponine up and down quickly. “I don’t think your sis would fail you and finding someone good to hang out with!”
Éponine couldn’t help a slight smile. It was good to see Gavroche happy... in all honesty, as much as she complained about him, she’d never been happier than when he’d turned up. One less person she had to worry about back home...
She couldn’t help but notice that, simply because... well, she was rather used to it. Just in rather less than pleasant circumstances. “I’m good at finding people who’ll... work, I guess. Special talent, maybe?”
“I bet you have a lot of talents, Éponine...”Smiled up at her and gave that charming flash of his eyes.
Gavroche simply rolled his eyes, able to tell what was going on from the very start.
And if he’d even mentioned that he knew that, Éponine would’ve had to have insisted that she had no idea what he was talking about. Scoot was just here to help her keep Gav amused, nothing more.
She could really only shrug, trying to ignore just how charming he seemed. Now wasn’t the time. “We’re a talented family. Just not in ways that people tend to expect.”
Gavroche rolled his eyes and picked out the many movies and sat down and well, he may have pushed Éponine down to sit down right by Scoot. After the first movie during food, Éponine had to run off to get a snack or something, and so they talked. About issues with now, the jail time. Grounding and how it sucks.
“You behave... I’ll get you a brand new game a day. And, if you’re really behaved, maybe even better consoles.”
“Really?!”
“Not going to lie to you...”
Now, that was a good time to come back into the room! Maybe, just maybe, Scoot would be the man who helped her change her little brother for the better... Éponine had nothing but the highest hopes for Gavroche, if he could manage it. “That’s much better than the system I came up with.”
Which, really, had never progressed further than ‘don’t be an idiot and I won’t ground you’. She’d been too busy with school to think up anything more in-depth.
“You stay out of trouble, with only three mild mess ups a month you’ll get a new game. I promise...” Smiled and crossed his heart.
“Cool! You’d be like a brother!” Gavroche commented with a smile as wide as anything from excitement.
Hopefully, he’d be more than just ‘like a brother’... that was just Éponine’s personal opinion, though. He was handsome, kind... you couldn’t blame her for finding him attractive, right? Especially compared to the sort of man she was used to. “You just get more and more awesome, don’t you?”
“Yep. Part of my job!” He said, smirking and did a quick one two up and down her body. Wow.
Gavroche made an ew face, because he knows that look.
Éponine just ignored that, for the most part. She was more than used to men looking her up and down, just... usually not in this safe a context. “I might have to ask you to come over more often. See just how much good you can do.”
