Who: Darcy Lewis and Hank McCoy
What: She comes over to look at a room
Where: His house in Irvine
When: Wednesday, March 6th. After Work
Rating: G?
Status: Complete
Darcy needed a new place to live. She would have been bouncing back and forth between friends, except that she really just wanted a bed of her own. Couches kind of sucked. This was the second time that she’d been put out on her butt with nowhere to live but her car. She didn’t want to live in her car. When Hank said that he had an extra room, she was a little hesitant but didn’t really know where else to go. If she lived by herself, she wouldn’t have this problem. But she didn’t have enough money for that.
After work, she headed to his place which turned out to not be far from Stark Tower. They could maybe even carpool into work together. That might be nice. She went up to the door and knocked. Hopefully Hank was already home.
If there was one thing that Hank McCoy was, it was awkward. He’d always had trouble when it came to social interactions, especially with people his own age or close to it and that had been proven with Darcy when he offered her his extra bedroom. He knew that there were probably better ways that he could have gone about it, but he’d seen someone in need and had a way to help, so he’d offered her his extra bedroom. While they might not have actually spoken in person, Hank knew that she worked at Stark Industries as well and she seemed like a good person and he hated to see someone in trouble.
Hank had left Stark a little while before Darcy and had just made it home before she arrived. “Hello, Darcy. Come in.” He moved aside to let her into the house.
If there was one thing about Darcy it was always that she was in trouble. Not like in a ‘oh the villain has kidnapped me again’ kind of trouble. More like the oh of course I got kicked out of my house and I don’t have a job, and I’m failing all my classes kind of trouble. Not that she was failing or didn’t have a job. It was just the whole actual being an adult thing that she had a problem with.
She gave a wave, and headed inside. “Hey Hank. Thanks for letting me come see the place.” If this didn’t work out, she’d go hang out with Jane. Somehow she thought that might not be a good idea. She loved Jane, but she didn’t know if they could live together without killing each other.
“It’s not a problem.” Hank said, closing the door behind Darcy. Hank had been living in the house, by himself for the last couple of months, spending most of his time when he was home, in the basement, working on various projects. He didn’t have the type of equipment that he now had access to at Stark Industries, but his basement probably wasn’t the right place for most of that equipment anyways and if he needed to, he’d bring what he was working on to work and continue it there. “Would you like something to drink before I show you around?” While he might be somewhat awkward, he wasn’t rude or inconsiderate and knew how to be a proper host.
It was a decent house, she was looking around and kind of checking out the little entry way as she took off her coat. “Oh um.. sure. Why not?” hopefully she wouldn’t come across as rude or anything. Darcy knew she had a big personality, and it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. “Nice place.” At least from what she saw. It was pretty decent size from the outside, she wondered what the rest of the house looked like.
“Thanks.” Hank smiled as he gestured for her to follow him into the kitchen, “I suppose we’ll start in the kitchen. I have water or soda.” He said as they reached the kitchen. The house wasn’t very old so everything was modern and that included the kitchen appliances, some of which Hank had enhanced slightly. He might have been nineteen and living on his own, but he knew how to cook and did it often.
Following him into the kitchen, she grinned a little. “Good idea,” she chimed in. Well it was good that he had all of these appliances. She knew a lot of guys hardly had anything, because they didn’t cook all that much. But it was cool that he had all of those things. “Looks good.”
Hank poured Darcy a drink and passed the glass to her before glancing around the kitchen as well, “I’ll admit, I’ve never actually had a roommate. Even at Harvard, I had a single room.” That had been more due to the fact that it would have been a little awkward for someone as young as Hank had been to room with someone who was eighteen or older. Once done in the kitchen, Hank led Darcy out into the dining room and then the living room. On a whole, the house was extremely clean, which also wasn’t typical of most men Hank’s age. but Hank wasn’t at all like most men his age, so it fit.
Taking her drink, she thanked him and took a sip. “Well I’ve had two roommates. Sort of. I was staying with my sister for a while, but she and I don’t see eye to eye, so she tossed me out. Then I moved in with this other girl. And.. she kicked me out because she wanted her boyfriend to move in, instead. Go figure.” People were kind of shitty. She didn’t really want to live with another woman again. She followed him through the house, just looking it over. It was nicer than the other places she’d been. “I’m not messy, I swear.” She figured that might be a thing. “And I’m not loud and obnoxious.” For the most part.
Hank didn’t say anything about the fact that Darcy’s sister had thrown her out, mostly because it wasn’t his place, “You wouldn’t have to worry about me kicking you out for someone else.” He honestly couldn’t imagine someone doing that to another person; just one day deciding that you wanted someone else to move in instead. If Hank were ever going to ask a roommate to leave, he would do it in a way that didn’t make come off as an asshole. “That’s good to know. Are you originally from California?” He asked, studying Darcy a little more.
Her sister was pretty awful, Darcy knew that. But she was glad not to have to talk about it. “Thanks. I appreciate it. I’ve been bounced around so much in the past like.. year that it’s a wonder that I’ve unpacked anything at all.” It might take her a while to unpack her own room if she moved in with Hank. Just in case. “Yep, born and raised. Never really went anywhere else.” At least unless it was in her dreams.
Hank nodded as he listened, “I’ve only been here a little under a year.” There were some things that Hank missed from home and from Boston, but on a whole, he liked California and the OC. “Would you like to see the bedroom that would be yours?” He figured that was probably a good thing to show Darcy if she was going to think of moving in.
“Yeah? You like it here?” It wasn’t for everyone, but most people seemed to like living here. Especially since it was warmer than a lot of places and rarely got cold. “Oh yeah, that sounds like a good idea.” She laughed a little and followed him up the stairs or wherever the bedroom was.
“I do. It’s not like any place I’ve been before.” Hank said as he led Darcy upstairs where there were two bedrooms and a bathroom. The first bedroom was his, so he led her past the one to the second and opened the door, “This is it.” The room was empty except for shades on the windows.
“That’s true, the OC is completely crazy. But in a good way, for the most part.” At least until the really creepy stuff happens. She peeked into the room and then fully went in. Huh. Decent size, and it looked like she could deal with it. It was nice that she didn’t have to go and rearrange things, since it was empty. Of course she needed to buy furniture. “I like it!”
Hank followed Darcy into the room and went to the closer, which he opened to reveal a recent sized walk-in with shelves and poles already installed and full length mirror on the inside of the door, “I don’t know how much clothes you have, but I think you’ll agree that this is more than enough room.” Hank’s room had a smaller closet, but since he didn’t have a large wardrobe, he hadn’t seen a reason to have the room with the larger closet.
Stepping into the closet, she looked around and laughed. “It is. And despite being a woman, my wardrobe isn’t huge.” She didn’t have enough money for that. Still this would fit all of the clothes that she did have. Which was nice. “I definitely approve.”
Hank couldn’t help but smile as he watched Darcy. While he knew that they more than likely had very different personalities, it would be really nice to have someone else around the house to talk to when he wasn’t downstairs working and it would certainly help him in his mission to get better at relating to people close to his own age. “I’m glad you like it.”
Maybe it was better to have conflicting personalities. It didn’t mean they wouldn’t get along, she supposed. There was just one tricky thing. “So.. I want to move in. But Jane.. my best friend is insisting I come live with her.” She reached up and showed Hank the messages that Jane was sending her. “But I haven’t made up my mind yet. I like Jane, she’s my best friend. I’m just not sure we won’t kill each other if we live together. Y’know?”
Hank nodded as he read the messages from Darcy’s friend, “Well, I obviously can’t tell you what to do. You have to do what you feel is right for you and for your friendship.” Of course part of Hank hoped that Darcy chose to move in, because he really was a little tired of being alone all the time.
“Yeah that’s true. I’ll have to think it over. Thanks for the offer, either way. I won’t take too long to decide. Promise.” She didn’t want to keep him waiting or anything, that was a douchey thing to do. Hopefully she would be able to make a decision quick and not disappoint anyone. “Anything else I should see? You don’t happen to have a hot tub so I can tell her I’m totally moving in cause you have a hot tub, right?” she was teasing of course, but couldn’t help it.
Hank chuckled and shook his head, “No. No, hot tub.” Although, if he wanted to, Hank could probably build a hot tub. “You know where to find me at work. Otherwise, you can always find me on Valarnet.”
“That’s a shame,” she said with a grin. It was always a shame when there wasn’t a hot tub. “Totally. I’ll be in touch. Thanks for showing me around. And even if I don’t move in, we could still hang out and stuff.” Hank seemed to be an alright dude.
“Of course. I’d like that.” Hank smiled then gestured towards the hall and led Darcy back downstairs. If there was one thing Hank was grateful for, it was the fact that practically everyone at Stark Industries was so easy to get along with. He’d never actually felt completely accepted anywhere he’d been before, but he felt as though that might just be the case now.
