Zach dialed Tessa’s number once he was done talking to the cops, and sighed as he rang her phone. He didn’t want her to worry, but he didn’t want her to find out some other way and worry then. So he called, sitting on a bench outside the doctor’s office, and feeling silly with his arm in a sling. He didn’t need it, but the paramedics had said he should use it for a few days, just to allow the muscles to be fine. The doctor had made sure it was fine, just a through and through that had barely gone deep enough to be that, but enough to make his whole right side hurt with every movement and jostle. Bah humbug.
he sighed and hoped she was in a good mood.
Tessa was at home in front of the TV when the phone rang, but she shut the tube off when she saw Zach’s number on the call ID. Zach always got her undivided attention. “Hi, handsome. How’s your weekend?”
“Oh, well, mostly good. Just hanging out. Ah. Got into a slight incident today. Was wondering if you wanted to have dinner?” He smiled to himself and facepalmed.
“You got into an incident, and were wondering if I wanted to have dinner,” Tessa echoed, wondering if those thoughts were meant to be connected or if they were as nonsequitur as they sounded. She had a feeling there would be more to the story, later on, but she’d let him get to that in his own time. “I always want to have dinner with you. What did you have in mind.”
“Well... I went shopping, see... and then there were robbers? And a witch and a super-hero defeated them, and I ended up sort of shooting at a guy and missing him but incapacitating him anyway, by way of shelf and television, and he didn’t miss? And he got my arm, but I’ll be okay if I manage to keep from having another anxiety attack. “ He paused. “I had two.” He felt like he sounded remarkably calm for the situation.
“Oh! well... er, do you like pizza?”
Okay, so maybe the story was going to come out sooner than later, though there still seemed to be bits and pieces missing. They could fill those in as they went along. Zach did sound rather calm for having had two anxiety attacks already. “Pizza is good,” she said, “Do you need me to come and pick you up?” If his arm was injured, she figured it was a safe bet that driving would be difficult.
“Yes, please. My car is at the store, and I am at the hospital. And I don’t think me and driving will be happening anytime soon. I’ll need to arrange for my car to be driven home.” He grinned for a moment. “Wanna drive a time machine, tomorrow?”
“I’d like that,” she said, smiling into the phone. Thor would be jealous when he heard she’d gotten to drive the Delorean, but mostly, she just wanted to be a help to Zach. “Are you cleared to go home now, or are you still waiting?” Either way, she figured she could go and wait with him.
“I’m cleared. I’m supposed to take medicine every few hours until the pain gets better but I am cleared to go eat a full meal then sleep.”
Zach smiled. “She said... to refrain from sex, but nothing short was off the list.” He was blushing.
“So plenty of kisses and cuddling for you,” she surmised, rolling off of the couch to go in search of her shoes and keys. Maybe they’d even fall asleep in each other’s arms. “I’m gonna jump in the car now, and you can tell me all about your adventures when I get there.”
Zach grinned. “Sounds perfect to me.” He smiled softly. “Okay. See you soon.” He hung up and rubbed his face, hands trembling. Thank God she was coming. He felt the need to hug her until he couldn’t do so anymore.
Tessa hopped into the car and drove to the hospital, dashing into the building as soon as she had parked the car. She was feeling a similar need to hug him, and hoping that his injuries weren’t any worse than he was making them out to be.
“Tessa---” He rose from the bench he was on and stepped to her as he saw her, one arm in a sling and bandaged, a hospital robe thrown over his shoulder, his shirt over his other arm and he threw his good arm around her, hugging her. He held her close and trembled, and smiled. “It’s good to see you.”
She hugged him--gently--and kissed his cheek, sighing softly against his neck. She’d been more worried than she’d realized, and it was good to see him on his feet. “How are you feeling?”
“Sore, tired, really annoyed at the universe. and, really... I just... wanna go to your place or mine and just... be. With you.” He smiled softly. “Think we can go and stay somewhere overnight together? And eat bad food and just... not think about weird OC, er, after I tell you the whole thing.”
“We can go anywhere you want,” she said, “As long as I can get you there by car.” She hadn’t mastered the whole instantaneous translocation thing yet, though she knew that her dream self could do it. She wasn’t sure if she would ever be able to take a passenger. “And you don’t have to talk about it if you really don’t want to. Let’s just go grab that pizza, and we’ll play it by ear.”
“Okay.” He smiled at her and nodded. ”Lets go.” He chuckled. “Today has been so very weird.” He followed her out of the hospital. Zach just wanted some time with her, alone.
She held the doors for him on the way out, so he wouldn’t have to move his upper body too much
and jostle his injured arm. Then she fell into step beside him and slipped her hand into his free hand as they walked to her car. Weird seemed to be the new normal for them--and for the OC in general--especially since they were dreamers. It was as if weird things had been happening all along, only now their perception had been altered, so that they could see through the media’s smokescreens.
But she didn’t really feel like delving into speculation on all of that right now. She just ushered Zach to her car, and drove home--stopping only to pick up the pizza that she had ordered along the way. She figured that her place would be different enough to give Zach a break from the world, but at the same time familiar enough that he wouldn’t feel like he was in a strange place if he woke up in the middle of the night.
Zach managed to grab a few things to add when they stopped, and grinned. It was nice being with her.
"Thank you. I like being around you. I'd planned on trying to cook something for you, for like, a stay home date kind of thing in a few days. Guess I'll need to postpone that."
He smiled ruefully.
Tessa smiled at him as she emptied her arms of pizza boxes and other fixings, and returned to his side to place a soft kiss on his cheek. “How about I cook you breakfast in the morning, instead?” she suggested, brushing her fingers through his hair. “I think it’s my turn to spoil you anyway.”
Zach blushed and grinned, kissing her cheek in turn, and hugging her with his one good arm. “I can live with that.” He nodded. “I like that.” He grinned widely. She was so sensual, so amazingly right, and he just shivered with the closeness of her. She aroused him and suddenly, he was achingly hard. he blushed as he felt it brush her as he hugged her, and chuckled.
“A lot.”
“Good.” She hugged him again, and patted his bottom. “No feeling bad because you have to take a day off. Just let me know what you need, and I’ll make it happen. One way or another. But right now, let’s get comfortable, and dig into that pizza.”
Zach blushed and grinned at her pat and returned the favor, maybe more lingeringly. “You, and I’ll need more clothing from my place, er, but that can wait.” He grinned at her. “Pizza, mmmm, and Tessa, mmmm.” He grinned.
He was blushing, but he loved the way they could be intimate now.
She smiled, and snuggled close, insinuating herself under his good arm as she wandered with him, further into the apartment. “You get to decide where we sit. Kitchen, living room, anywhere you want.” Another thought occurred to her, prompted by his prediction of needing clean clothes, but she waited until they were seated and comfortable before broaching the subject.
“You know,” she mused, “If we keep doing this, maybe you should leave some things here, so you won’t have to run back and forth as much.” Granted, she’d be going out to pick up his car tomorrow, and could easily bring back a change of clothes and things, but in the future... “I’m sure I have an empty drawer you could use.”
Zach blushed and grinned a little. He hugged her close and smiled softly. The couch seemed nice so he steered there. He liked her couch, when she was there.
“Maybe we could do the same for you at my place.” He had never considered it, not yet, but now, he found it eminently logical. Why not? They shared bodies, and hearts, a little bit of living space seemed small comparatively.
“I’d like that, a lot.” He blushed at her, but his eyes were full of warmth.
“Me too,” she confessed, snuggling against his shoulder for a moment before giving him his good arm back, so he could eat. A few months ago, she would have probably freaked out at the idea of giving him a drawer, but now? It did seem like the next logical step. And she was glad that he seemed comfortable with the idea as well.
He started to eat, but as he munched, he touched her, and grinned. he felt like, right now, this moment, he was closer to her than he had ever been. She felt... amazing and was being so supportive, so true. It made him feel like the luckiest man alive. And he wanted her to know.
“I feel lucky, like I am the luckiest man alive.” Anxiety and all, he was still pretty darn living a good life.
“I’m glad to hear it,” she said, smiling. She felt like she had really shifted gears since she’d met Zach. She still worked as much as ever, but she didn’t feel so much like she was chasing something that was always just out of reach. She wasn’t sure if she could define that something, even though it was sitting right in her lap now, but it was a good thing.
Zach kissed her again, softly, then harder, and that one good hand maybe slipped around to grope her ass just a little. “And also? I like to touch you.”
Maybe Tessa wiggled her booty in his hand as he groped her, and maybe her own hand slid teasingly along his upper leg. Maybe she ought to know better than to fool around when the doctor said ‘no sex’ but... “I like it when you touch me.”
Zach grinned at how she moved and touched him. “Good. I don’t think I could stop, and I like how you touch me in response.” he shivered.
“Mm...just take it easy tonight, eh?” She kissed his cheek, and nuzzled his neck. Zach was turning out to be a surprisingly enthusiastic and passionate lover, now that he was comfortable exploring those things with her. “We can do as much as you want, once your arm is feeling better.”
Zach nodded. “OKay. I can do that.” He snuggled close to her and started eating and smiled. She was amazing. An amazing lover, an amazing woman, and an amazing friend. And he loved being with her.
Tessa smiled, and wrapped her arms around him, just holding him for a long moment. She didn't want to discourage his curiosity or his spontaneity, but she didn't want him to think she was unhappy just being together like this. It felt good and perfect just the way it was.
"Thanks for letting me be here for you, Zach. For sharing things with me, even when it's tough." Maybe someday life would stop being crazy, but even if it didn't, at least they knew knew they had what it took to come together instead of letting it push them apart.
“I want to be with you, Tessa. Heck, I like it a lot more than being alone. And no one feels... right. Not like being around you does. I love being with you and sharing things with you.” He snuggled her close, feeling at peace.
“You make my heart smile.”
She laid a hand over his heart, feeling the subtle beat beneath her fingers. “You know, when I was in school I saw a video where they demonstrated that if you place cardiac cells from two different hearts together, they start to beat in unison.”
She kissed him again, and leaned back to look him in the eyes. “I guess what I’m trying to say is...you make my heart smile too.”
Zach smile softly. “Amazing woman.” He pulled her close to kiss her again and then grinned, pulling back too. “Every day you feel closer, more solid, more.. comfortable.” He nodded again.
“I think I could get used to being around you a lot.”
