Zelda didn’t do a lot of shopping on her own. She normally sent people out for things, as she didn’t want to get sighted in a shop. She hated that there were so many people walking around with camera phones now, and that every Tom, Dick and Harry knew her face. She didn't have a lot of privacy under the best circumstances. But one of her best girl friends (an actress, actually, on some teeny bopper show about vampires, or something) needed a birthday present.
She ended up at a nursery she’d heard about from another friend of a friend, to try and find a nice, little, potted plant. What to get for the girl who has everything, right? As she entered the shop, Zelda pulled off her sunglasses and scarf. It was warmer inside than out.
Navi was working that day, dancing around and watering the plants as she sang along to the radio. She was only just starting to show that she was pregnant, and she liked being out and about. When she saw another girl walk into the store, Navi bounced up and waved. “Hi!”
“Hi.” Zelda said, breaking into a grin. She thought maybe she recognized the woman from somewhere, but she wasn’t sure where. “How are you today?” She asked, always polite and friendly. They were traits she adopted from her late mother, as her father was more calculating and business-like.
But Zelda was looking around the shop now, enjoying the sight of all the different plants and flowers. It was quite nice to be surrounded by so much vegetation. Felt like nature.
“I’m good! Do you need help finding anything?” She put her blonde hair up into a messy ponytail, grinning to herself. The girl looked just like she did in her dreams. It made her blush.
Zelda couldn’t help but notice the blush on the other’s face. Though, she thought that it was endearing. “I’ve got a friend who has a birthday coming up, and I thought... I dunno... Daffodils? It’s the season for those, right?”
“It is! Would you like a flowering pot, or would you like just some clippings?” Navi smiled, coming around to help the girl. Navi was showing, just barely, and she was extra bouncy.
“Oh, definitely a pot.” Zelda said, smiling. She noticed that the other woman looked as if she might have a bun in the oven, but she would never mention it. What if she was wrong? How embarrassing would that be? “I think that screams birthday present, doesn’t it?”
“I think so too! What’s her favorite color, I’ve probably got a pot that color!” Navi grinned to herself, running her fingers over her swollen belly, humming to herself.
“Ooh, green, I think. The color of money.” Zelda said, turning to follow the kind woman through the shop. “She’s really... more of a friend of my father’s? But we’ve always been friendly. So I want to make sure she knows that I care about her birthday!”
“Birthdays are a good day for that. You only know the birthdays of people that matter. And green’s the color of growing things, of prosperity in general!” Navi found a pretty leaf green planter and held it up. “Like that?”
“Oooh, I love it.” Zelda said, stepping forward to take hold of it. “It’s a good size, too,” she said, holding it up. “Not too big, not too small... and we can put daffodils in it?”
“Of course! They’ll need to be repotted someday - all plants do if you keep them long enough - but this will be a good home for them for a long time.” Navi smiled at Zelda, wondering how to say ‘oh, hey, I dream of you all the time’.
“That’s great.” Zelda said, admiring the pot she held in her hands. This had been far, far too easy--finding her friend a birthday present. It was almost like she cheated. “So... show me the rest of the shop? Unless you’re busy.” She added, glancing around at the other customers.
“Nope! I’m the owner, so I’m really just here to sing to the plants and make sure everything’s going all right.” She ran her hands over her stomach. “I’m fourteen weeks in, and I figured better to start being in an owner role now than to do it later.”
“Congratulations!” Zelda said, giving a gasp and a laugh. “That’s super exciting! I don’t even know... do you know what it’s gonna be? Boy or girl? I have no idea how these things work.”
“I think it’s going to be a little girl, but don’t tell my husband. He’ll sulk.” Navi didn’t really know how it worked either, she was just trying to be the healthiest host for the baby.
“Awww, a little girl!” Zelda said, beaming. She was giddy with happiness for the woman she’d never met. “That’s so wonderful! I mean, either way it’s going to be perfect!” She hugged the planter to her chest. “So... show me around the shop?”
“Sure thing!” Navi bounced around contentedly, showing Zelda through the flowers first, then the herbs, then the plants. “My grandpa owned this place, and my great-grandpa before him. Been in the family for ages.”
“That’s so wonderful!” Zelda said, following her host around and ooh’ing and aah’ing at all the right places. She nodded when they came back around to where they’d started. “You have a really great shop here. I’ve never had a job, but if I did work, I’d want to work in a place like this.”
“I like it.” Navi smiled, trying to control her wings. “If I didn’t work here, I’d come here all the time. It’s like a second home to me by now.”
“That’s so sweet.” Zelda said, giving an ‘aww’ face as if she was looking at a puppy. “I don’t really have one of those. A home-away-from-home.” Unless you counted her family’s limo.
“Yup, this is it! And now that my grampa’s gone, sometimes this is where I feel closest to him.” Navi smiled, looking up. “He raised me, I lost my parents when I was a baby.”
“I’m so sorry.” Zelda said, her ‘aww’ face melting into a little frown. “My mother died when I was little, too.” She added, softly. Not that she was trying to compare, or anything. It wasn’t fair to compare anyone’s experiences with anyone else’s.
Navi moved to hug the girl. Sure, they barely knew each other, but still. Losing parents wasn’t easy, and Navi wouldn’t wish it on anyone else. “I’m sorry,” she murmured.
Zelda loved hugs. She absolutely loved them. She wrapped one arm around the other girl--as she was still holding the planter practically between them--and returned the hug. “Thank you. I’m sorry, too.” She meant for both of their losses, not just her own.
“But we still have people around, that’s good, right? I’m making a new family, and my husband is the best husband for me ever. I can’t see myself with anyone else.” Navi beamed, folding her hands on her tummy.
“Awww!” This time the ‘aww’ face came along with the actual word. An exclamation, really. Zelda was a big fan of all things happy, and marriage fell into that category most of the time. New babies? Fuggetaboutit. She loved them. “That’s so sweet! You’re so lucky. You have a beautiful store, a great husband, and a baby on the way! I’m a bit jealous.” She teased. “But really... what’s your secret?” She added, teasing again.
Navi laughed a little. “I showed him my boobs on the internet.”
Zelda blinked at the woman, not sure whether that was supposed to be a joke. “...you... what?” She said, then gave a tentative laugh. “Really?”
“Well. Technically on his phone, but I teased him online until he gave me his number, then I teased him on text, then I sent him a photo and he asked me out.” Navi laughed.
“Wow.” Zelda grinned. “I wish I could have your guts! I could never do something like that with someone I liked.” She said. You’d think a girl with as many resources as Zelda had would have more self-confidence. But she somehow maintained a bit of naivety and a humble nature. Most of the time.
“Eh, they’re just boobs. If he didn’t like them, I’d just move on.” Navi was a hippie, extremely comfortable with her body, and it had been fun scaring Pete at the time.
“Well, I guess that’s true.” Zelda said, giving a little grin. She was fairly modest, considering. “But I’m so terrified that I’m going to screw things up with people I’m crushing on, you know?”
“I think it helped that I didn’t have a crush on him yet. I actually got more shy once we were dating because I didn’t want to scare him with how fast I loved him.” Navi laughed. “I kinda went backwards!”
“Awww!” Zelda said. She meant it. “You two have such a cute story! I love it.” She was a little jealous. Zelda was a hopeless romantic. Though she’d never been in love, she couldn’t wait to fall. She kept looking for it, developing crushes on people. It was fruitless 99% of the time, though.
“Well, Pete’s cute himself. Though don’t tell him.” Navi grinned, holding a finger to her lips. “He likes to think he’s scary.”
“Ooh, okay.” Zelda was trying not to laugh, but grinning so brightly that she didn’t need to. “When I meet him, I’ll pretend to be scared.”
“He’ll like you very much!” Navi liked that Zelda said that she’d meet Pete someday. It meant that her dreams had some sort of rationality. The girl she’d admired so much - she liked her!
Zelda gave a laugh, and joked, “I’m sure he will.” She beamed, mock-self-assuredly. “Everyone loves me, didn’t you know?” Then she gave Navi a wink.
“You’re very likable,” Navi beamed, hugging her again.
Zelda loved the hugs. She accepted it, wrapping her arm around the other girl. “I’m Zelda, by the way.” She said, grinning.
“I’m Navi.” Navi had wanted to just say ‘I know’, but she bit her lower lip and just said her name.
“Oh, that’s right! We met on that Valarnet!” Zelda said, beaming. She moved toward the register with her planter. “It’s great to meet you in person.” She added, then set the planter on the counter. “So, I’ll need the planter and some soil, and some daffodils. Pretty ones.” She said, grinning brightly as she sidled up to the counter to pay for her purchases.
Navi moved to get the items, beaming. “Yup, we met there! And okay, let me go grab you some soil.” She felt kind of glowy, meeting someone she’d looked up to so much.
If only Zelda remembered the dreams! She took the moments that Navi was collecting things for her to look at the things around the register. She was afraid to grab anything else, because that would certainly open the floodgates, and she would have bought out the whole shop. She beamed when the other woman came over with her things, and pulled out her wallet to pay.
Navi rang her up, bagging everything - but not before tying a big bow around the pot the daffodils were going into. “Thank you for coming. You should drop by more often, I’d love to have you!”
“I will! I absolutely will.” Zelda said, giving Navi a bright smile. “Thank you so much for everything, Honey. My girl friend is going to love this!” She lifted the bag, and gave Navi a wink, then turned to head out of the shop, humming a tune to herself as she went.
