AJ had some magazines in front of her on the table, and a binder with all of her wedding ideas. Since they decided to get married, she’d had time to buy magazines and google stuff online. She had a few ideas about what she wanted, but wanted to make sure that he was on the same page with her about everything.
She sent him a text asking him if he could please come straight home after work, then ordered a pizza, and sat down at the table to start going through all of this stuff.
John smiled when he got her text and replied letting her know he was on his way. He had gotten even more efficient at his job since his powers manifested. Flight, invisibility, strength, toughness? These all helped, and he could now fly to and from work, fast! he noticed his speed had increased again as he shot through the air, invisible so no one would see him travel so.
When he landed outside their house, he simply walked in, and closed the door before letting his invisibility fade. “Honey, I’m Home!”
AJ looked up from the kitchen table where she’d been perched. She grinned at the sight of him. “This is... really domestic.” She said, then gave a laugh.
He chuckled. “We sort of are, yes.” He grinned at her. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.” He moved to kiss her then glanced at the table. “Whatcha got?”
AJ returned his kiss, then motioned toward the clippings and print-outs she had spread over the table. “Wedding ideas. I didn’t think I was gonna enjoy this, but... well, there you go.” She slipped into her chair. “...do you have thoughts? Colors, flowers, cake, any of that?”
John chuckled and peered at her then at the lippings and nodded. “No green, if we can keep away from it. Otherwise, I really don’t have a lot of preferences.” He nodded. “And I do love chocolate cake.” He grinned at her. “You?”
“Red and yellow? I like those colors.” AJ said, giving a little shrug. “And it has to be chocolate cake. With white chocolate frosting.” She added, grinning. “Come look at these flowers.” She said, pointing to a picture she’d clipped out of a magazine. “If we do something in the spring, that is... relatively soon... we can use red roses and yellow tulips.”
He nodded. “I can agree with that.” John smiled, listening. “Do we want a soon wedding or a fall one or what?” he grinned at her, curious. “Tulips are very nice.”
“Soon.” AJ said, giving him a smile. “April?” That didn’t give them a lot of time, but AJ didn’t need something crazy. She didn’t need a huge wedding.
“April it is.” He grinned. “April 6th?” he rubbed his face. “A church or a meeting hall?”
“Actually, I thought we’d have it in the Apple Orchard at my brother’s place.” AJ said, sounding hopeful.
John blinked, but nodded, then, and grinned. “I like it. That sounds like a very cool idea.” He smiled at her. “Under open sky, by stars and sun, by setting day, and by night, be done. Let words reveal what hearts already know, and bring forth a compact of love , whose seeds we sow.” He grinned, blushing, as he finished the impromptu poetry.
AJ was blushing by the end of it, too. Giving a gentle “aww” face, as if she was looking at the most adorable thing she’d ever seen. She leaned forward and tapped a kiss against his lips. “You get to write the service.”
He grinned and licked her lips, then blinked. “Me? I... I’ll do my best by it, love.” He nodded. “We can figure out how to make everything fit in in the rewrites.” he grinned at her.
This was going to be an adventure! he felt a little odd, though and sat down. “I’m hoping the next few days are calm, though. I have been feeling almost like I’m coming down with something.”
AJ was smiling, full of love, as she looked at him. “Have you?” She frowned a bit, and leaned over to rest her hand against his forehead. “Head cold?”
"Not sure. Feels like I'm a little bit off my normal... Everything. ” He sighed. “ I’m sorry. It's probably nothing. " Which was when he started turning green, very green.
AJ let go for a moment and pulled herself up to her feet to get him some ice water. She’d just turned away when he started to turn green, and was turning back to look at him for a moment. She gave a little gasp. “John... Your skin...”
John blinked and looked down then swore. “Ah, well, I was afraid this would happen sometime. My dreamself is green.” He sighed. “With whatever this is affecting me, it must be dream enabled.”
“Wow.” AJ said, then gave up on the water, and stepped over toward him. “...you... just green? or are you a different texture?” She reached a hand out to touch his hand.
His skin was a slightly different texture a little tougher. Not as tough as it would become, maybe, but tougher. And a little warmer. He peered at his hand and then reached for hers. “You tell me.”
“You feel different.” AJ said. She was concerned, but not terrified. She moved to sit back down in her chair, holding his hand in both of hers. She lifted her eyes to his face. “... this is so strange.”
John chuckled. “Yeah, uh, I know. I’m sorry. I know this isn’t what you signed up for. I’m still me, though.” He nodded. He had J’onn’s knowledge and he felt like he had absorbed the other, somehow. “In the end, despite his alien-ness, I think J’onn was close enough to me that we’ve sort of merged, and I don’t feel... any different.” He thought. “More confident, maybe.” then he sighed. “But I was hoping I wouldn’t turn green.”
“Merged?” AJ asked. She was a little nervous that he was changing too much. Changing so much that things would change. Seriously change. Change between them. She squeezed his hand. “...I don’t know what that means.”
“It means... his mind melted into mine. Giving me his power. But I don’t feel any different. Except for the physical change now.” he wiggled a hand and was disturbed then the hand distended a little, and literally shifted to longer fingers.
“Yeah, that’s a little disturbing.”
AJ stared at his hand, blinking at his fingers. She wasn’t sure what to think. He was going to have to figure out how to fix it. Or, to control it. Whatever. They’d been through so much lately, she wasn’t sure what to do, how to handle it all. “Wow.” She said, leaning back in her chair.
He sighed and concentrated, and he managed to get his hands back to normal shape, but the color was still greenish. “Darn it.” He smiled slightly. “The skin may take a little longer. I’m sorry, AJ.” He felt bad, and he felt worse for her.
“It’s all right,” AJ said, bringing her hand back around to touch his. “...you look so strange. But... it’s still you in there, isn’t it?”
“It is.” He bent his head to kiss her hand. “I am John Jones, and I love you, AJ, Applejack, Aponi. I won't let that change, no matter what.” John nodded to her, eyes warm and almost glowing with love.
AJ lifted her hand to chip his cheek, then drew him in to kiss his lips.
He kissed her softly, and smiled. It would be okay. And even as he thought it, his face’s skin color and tone changed back to how it had been. The rest was still green, hot, and a little rough, but it was a start.
AJ pulled back after a moment and opened her eyes. She broke into a smile. “There you are.”
He kissed her nose.
“I love you.”
He snuggled her close, knowing that no matter what happened, they would make it.
FIN.
