At the insistence of his parents, Roger was getting out more. Well, half at their insistence, half because he couldn't stand them really after too long. He was trying in vain to find a new job, and after a fruitless day of handing out resumes, he wound up at a record store he'd been recommended.
So there he was, absently flipping through the vinyl, hoping for something to catch his eye.
“If you’re looking for something good you’re in the wrong place,” Glimmer said looking over his shoulder at what it was he was looking at. “There’s a better place down the road but this place is cheaper if you’re willing to invest a lot of time in looking.”
Turning she went back to the pile she was currently sifting through at the moment.
He jumped a bit, startled by the sudden sound of another voice. He’d been lost in his own world for a moment there. Glancing over his shoulder, Roger offered a bit of a smile. As best as he could, really.
“Oh. Well. A few people told me this was a good place? I don’t mind the looking really. I don’t actually have anything better to do.” God that sounded so pathetic. He shrugged, and made an attempt to laugh it off.
"Then you are in good company today." She didn't really have anything to do either and as much as she loved photography she needed a break once in a while.
"Looking for anything specific?"
Well, that made him crack a sincere grin at any rate. He shrugged a little, flipping through more sleeves.
“Not really. Just anything that catches my eye. My dad’s got an old record player he never uses so I’m taking it for myself, now I just need some variety to play on it.”
"Okay how about some oldies? Like Motown or classic rock? It's better than a lot of this new garbage they call music." Not that she was a music consessuier but she knew what she liked.
“Oh, definitely older stuff. I have the most limited Beatles collection ever, and I think I’d really like to get some good Bob Dylan. Classic rock is always a plus.” Roger paused for a moment. “You know, I’ve never really put much attention on motown. I’ve heard it, but I’ve never really stopped to wonder if I like it or not.”
Glimmer shook her head. "Then I must send you home with a Temptations record or something." She didn't like all of it but she liked some of it. "Favorite classic rock band?"
“Oh, geez.” He laughed. “I guess it’d be a toss up between Aerosmith, The Eagles, and Queen.”
Glimmer considered his choice for a moment. “All good choices but what is classic rock without Journey?” They weren’t the greatest band but they were pretty good. “Always been an Eagles fan myself. Then again I like a lot of stuff outside rap. Never got into that.”
“I think Journey sort of goes without saying,” he offered, then shook his head, amused.
“Yeah. I think you’re right about music these days. Some of it’s all right, but I think it’s lost a lot of the heart it used to have. People just churn out stupid lyrics with recycled melodies. There’s no feeling anymore.”
Glimmer nodded as she flipped through some more records. “I mean look at all the Justin Biebers and the songs that sound like Call Me Maybe,” and those were just the first things that came to mind and she was sure they weren’t the best examples. “Then again these days teenagers are the vast percent of the market and they like that garbage.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” he admitted. It was too bad, really. “And then the ones that don’t like it pretend to like this stuff, but they don’t really.”
Glimmer shrugged her shoulders. “Then again I guess I can’t blame people for doing what sells. I mean everyone has to make money and be able to eat.” There were a few mainstream songs she found stuck in her head but it wasn’t all bad. “Have any guilty pleasures for as music goes?”
“I don’t know, really. I mean, probably?” Roger shrugged a bit himself. “I don’t really listen to the radio much, unless I’m out somewhere and they’re playing something. Does Bon Jovi count as a guilty pleasure?”
“Sure!” Glimmer said with a laugh. “You might lose a few credibility points if you were to say something like Rhianna or Taylor Swift or something like that.” There were more credible artists but even she had to admit their songs were sometimes kind of catchy. “Though I think we’re a bit out of style and should be checking out iPods or something.”
“I have an iPod!” Roger said, somewhat indignantly, though that dissolved into a somewhat embarrassed smile of amusement. “And iPod classic. One of the old, big square ones from, I don’t know … 2008?”
"Then that's acceptable," she told him with a laugh. "I can't lie I would probably have one if I had the money and didn't spend all of what I do have on camera equipment."
"Do you do photography? Obviously, right, sorry. That was a stupid question." Roger turned around properly, figuring that if they were having a conversation, he may as well face her.
"I'm Roger, by the way." He figured he may as well introduce himself, too.
“I would like to think of myself as a self-proclaimed photographer but I guess that is a matter of personal opinion.” Glimmer told him with a s grin. “Glimmer. Yeah, yeah... Weird name I know. Believe me I didn’t pick it.”
“I like it.” He shrugged again, smiling a little. “I mean. It’s better than Roger, isn’t it. But it’s cool. A good name for a photographer.”
“I’ll take Roger any day.” She admitted with a shrug. A common name was better than something that was so different people either snickered or laughed at. It was the first thing she was changing once she turned eighteen. “But thanks. Maybe I’ll keep it for my photography name.”
“Or at least your business name. Who knows, maybe you’ll grow into it.” He offered her a hopeful sort of look. “You don’t even grow into a name like Roger until you become an old man, I think.”
Glimmer had to laugh because he kinda did have a point. “Okay so we both got the short straw when it comes to names. They should let us pick our own names or something. Like give us temporary names until we’re teens or something and let us pick.” Or something like that.
“That wouldn’t be too bad. I could get behind that.” Roger nodded, then looked thoughtful as he tried to think of his ideal name. “What would you pick? Sparkle?”
Glimmer had to laugh. “Certainly not. I’ve had enough with names people often associate with fairies or some crap like that.” She had heard all the jokes. “My sister calls me Vika, short for Vikatoria. With the crazy Russian spelling because the English spelling is boring. It’s different but still classic enough not to be too odd.” She paused for a moment. “What would you pick if you could?”
“Yeah? I think that’s a pretty good name for a photographer, too.” He gave her an amused half smile, and then he shrugged. “I don’t even know. Every time I think of one, it sounds even worse than Roger. I’m doomed, I think, to a life of boring names.”
“Then I am doomed to a life of unusual ones so I guess that makes us even, huh?” Glimmer said with a grin.
“Yeah, I guess it does. We’ll cancel each other out in the name department. All is right in the universe once again.” With a bit of a chuckle, Roger turned back around and selected two records that had caught his attention before their conversation started.
“Uh. You said I needed a Temptations record, right?”
“You certainly do. You haven’t heard music until you’ve listened to them.” Sure there were probably better Motown artists but they were classics that everyone needed to know.
“Well, I can hardly pass that up. I assume you know where I might find one in this place?” He raised his eyebrows, amused. He may as well get it, really. What harm could there be in having an extra record kicking around. Besides, he might end up enjoy it, he figured.
“Right here!” She said producing the record from the stack in front of her. “Greatest hits. Everything you need to know more. Next time we will get you something cooler and more recent.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Roger agreed. He took the record and added it to the ones he already had, then shifted his weight a little. “Suppose I should go, then. In case any opportunistic employers decided to give me a call. If not, I’ve got plenty to do tonight while immersing myself in the wonders of Motown.”
Glimmer nodded. “Fair enough. Have to let me know what you think of the record.”
“I will. Thanks again. For the recommendation, and, you know, giving me something to do for ten minutes of my time or whatever.” Roger offered her a pleasant smile. “Good luck on the photography thing.”
“Thanks!” She said with a grin. “Take care!”
“Yeah, you too.” He gave her a bit of an awkward but friendly wave, shuffling his way to the counter to pay for his new records and go.
