This class. Was so boring. It was History: 1500s to 1700s. And while it had been kind of cool to hear about all the middle age stuff for a while there, Toph wasn’t really having much of it anymore.
Her aide was up front in the lecture style seating and taking proper notes for her, where Toph was sitting a little closer to the back of the room. She had been half heartedly listening to the lecture, when she found herself bored to tears.
Well. Not tears. Snores. She was definitely asleep and snoring.
Cadence was sitting next to Toph. She broke into a grin at the sound of the snoring, then reached an elbow over and gently nudged the other girl.
SNRK. Cadence’s poking had elicited from Toph the kind of snore that woke up even the one making it. Her head shot up, and she sat up straight, sightless eyes wide and blinking. “Ahem,” she said, in order to cover up the noise she’d just made.
The professor noticed the sound and glanced over at the two girls, but didn’t stop his lecture.
Cadence leaned over toward Toph. “You might be drooling. Just a little bit.” She whispered, unable to stop smirking.
That was the best thing about lecture courses; the teachers rarely seemed to give a shit. Toph nearly flushed at the comment and wiped at her mouth, still feeling a little groggy. “Ugh,” she whispered. “How long was I out?”
“A few minutes.” Cadence said, grinning. “I’m not sure anyone else noticed. Well, okay, maybe a couple of people noticed.” She said, glancing around. But everyone seemed to be focused on the professor once more.
“Ugh,” she said again, because that was the sort of thing you were meant to say, right? She wiped carelessly at her eyes, smearing eyeliner and not caring and then gave a little in-seat sort of stretch. She was silent for a moment, and the lecture droned on. Bored. Bored. Toph fought against the rising urge to sleep again. So she leaned over to bother the other girl in whispers. “This class sucks.”
Cadence gave a little snort. “Yes, well. Most of these pre-requisite classes feel completely useless. Waste of a semester.” She shook her head. “But at least it’ll take care of requirements for me.”
“Whatever,” Toph said, feeling around on the ground for her bag and jacket. “Let’s go, huh?” She was clearly in one of her more rebellious moods.
"Go?" Cadence asked, glancing around. She packed her notebook into her bag, breaking into a grin. "Go where?"
“For lunch, obviously,” Toph said, barely attempting to constrain her voice into a whisper. “I’ll give you my notes later, it’ll be fine.” And then, without waiting to see if the other girl would follow her, she slipped out the nearest push door. Not that she could have seen if she’d been followed anyway. She just needed to wait and listen.
“Oh, obviously.” Cadence said, feeling her heartbeat speed up. It wasn’t like her to skive off class, but she felt daring today. She climbed up out of her chair and followed Toph as she lead the way out of the hall. “Where are we going for lunch?” She asked, once they were out of the lecture hall.
Toph grinned, toothy and pleased, to hear the other girl had actually followed. She wasn’t looking to be a bad influence or anything, she was just so bored. She wanted to do something fun for once. It wasn’t really like missing a day of Ancient History Snooze 101 was gonna kill anyone.
“I dunno,” she said, shouldering her backpack. “What’re you feeling?”
“Sandwiches?” Cadence asked. She was feeling a bit giddy, excited, thrilled to be out of class. It wasn’t something she did often, even after nearly three years of college. She was just raised differently than that. “They’ve got some really great coffee at the deli over in the Student union.”
Toph didn’t usually bother with things like food from the school’s cafeteria or Union or whatever, so was hard pressed to really know where to find the place. “Okay,” she said, but then crossed her arms, giving the other girl a look -- or well, at least a look in her direction. “Just to clear the air so shit isn’t awkward later, I’m just gonna say this now. I’m blind, and I’ve never been to the Union. So. You’ll have to show me the way.”
Cadence gave a little nod. “I uh... I had the first part figured out,” she said. The poor girl was likely going to get chewed up by Toph. She was far too sweet, far too gullible. “It’s this way.” She said, turning to lead the way. Awkward. Was she supposed to like, take the other’s hand? Arm? Walk slow? She had no idea.
Toph rolled her eyes. “You don’t need to -- like - touch me. Just talk while we walk. Or stomp. I don’t care either way, although people would probably look at you less funny if you just talked.” She fell into step beside the girl, anyway. Toph had a very strange way of making friends.
“Oh. Okay.” Beat. “I can do that.” Only, now that she had to talk, she had no idea what she was supposed to talk about. It took her a moment to figure out what to say, though she made sure that Toph was still beside her with each step. “I’m not used to cutting class.”
“Gee really?” Toph asked, and it came out about as sarcastic as one imagined it might. Still. She smiled a little, and it was honestly a cute little smile. “So why did you do it today?”
“I dunno. Some chick said I should, so I followed along.” Cadence said, finally giving back a little of the teasing that Toph was giving her. “Maybe you’re more convincing than you give yourself credit for.”
“Oh,” said Toph, rather bemused. “I know I’m convincing, don’t worry. I just didn’t think I’d tried very hard. But that class is a snoozefest.”
“Maybe I was just desperate to get out and didn’t know it until you mentioned something.” Cadence said, breaking into a little smirk. “You’re good.”
She led the way to the cafe, babbling a bit about what they were learning in class while Toph was resting her eyes, then held open the door so they could go in. It was a little busier in here, a little louder, and it smelled like glorious coffee.
Coffee sounded perfect. Coffee and sandwiches. So that’s what they had and it was awesome.
