All Jean could really do was smile back. Anything else just felt needlessly cruel, but he had his head up, and that had to count for something. He was obviously a man tormented, so maybe now he’d find a measure of peace.
She had no delusions that she was the cause of the torment, though. Whatever had happened to him was long before they met.
