Jean’s eyes were sad, probably sadder than she even knew.
“Not fatal. Just… not possible. I’m so sorry.” She felt lower than dirt in this instant, and wanted nothing more than the ground to swallow her up. Since that seemed unlikely, she fought the urge to retreat, begging the hour and her obvious exhaustion. But she was a better person than that.
“But never fatal. I value friendship a lot higher than that.”
